Opinions

1. Managerial. So far maybe Brad Ausmus. Catcher and sort of local product. Good guy for Francisco Alvarez possibly to tutor. Seems sound minded, family guy. No e-mail photo type guy. Two winning managerial seasons with the Tigers. Managed in "Detroit", so may be willing to come to NY despite Covid concerns here and nutty people. Not really that terribly thrilled with the rest of the purported managing candidates to be truthful here. Beltran was part of a sort of noticeable division here that I never liked seeing happen to this team. Don't care how good he played. This is not playing, it is managing. Willie Randolph had his shot here already...The rest of the known candidates seem so-so to me. Would love to see an ex-NYM player manage here. But does any have the necessary experience, is the question. Someone who has bled orange and blue in other words. Where is that guy I ask?

2. I told you that Robinson Cano is not dead. A lot of people liked what they saw from Javier Baez here in 2021. He did play well. But he also got injured, back spasms, and missed some time. These back issues seldom just "go away" and tend to be re-occurring in a player's career. Robbie Cano just had an adductor strain (groin area) and typical hammy stuff in the past which all players get from time to time.

In the hitting department.

Cano (16 seasons) .303 BA/ 334 HR's/struck out maybe 1/8 of at bats.

Baez (8 seasons) .264 BA/149 HR's/struck out close to 1/3 of his at bats.

Age is a factor, and so is success ratios and stats. I go with Robinson Cano here because this particular 2022 team will need some veteran type leadership more than a guy who is somewhat immature and picks fights on the field for no reason than theatrics. Those players like Javier, we can get elsewhere if case need be.

3. Change the uni's somewhat. This needs to be a whole "new thing" here with this team in 2022, and any association with the last 20 miserable seasons does sort of need to be forgotten I think.

It's been 36 years since the last WS rings were distributed, and it is time to win for certain. Mets fans deserve it too. We gave somehow endured this long.

Make it so.

Thinking Outloud

On Buck Showalter. I don't question his success as a manager. But I do question his personality here for these Mets.

Why are the Mets having Ronnie Mauricio play shortstop in AFL with the Lindor contract in play locking Francisco in at shortstop? Good question possibly.

On Stroman. Marcus has pitching qualities. But can he be counted on at the top of the rotation is the really big question. Too risky.

The Mets have like 3-4 good younger right handed starters vying for the four and five slot this season, like someone here already has stated above. So who do you take away starting to allow Stroman to be in the rotation? Don't the Mets need some really good and proven lefty starters?

Of these starters listed below.

Jake deGrom, Marcus Stroman, Taijuan Walker, Tyler Megill, Joey Lucchesi, Jordan Yamamoto, Jared Eickhoff, Robert Stock, Carlos Carrasco, Rich Hill, Corey Oswalt, Drew Smith, David Peterson, Adam Oller, Josh Walker, Trevor Williams, and Monte Python. So which ones catch my eye for 2022 here starting?

None really. Maybe if Jake and Taijuan can hold up for a season.

Not all can or will start of course, but still several could be in the conversation if you include here the 2022 Mets bullpen openings. It's not a bad idea really because if ready and worthy to do so, these younger arms could not only be successful relieving perhaps as much or more so than bringing in a veteran reliever from another team for a lot larger contract. Plus, it gives some of these younger arms decent MLB experience. This contract money saved, by using them, could better factor in with this team's roster rebuilding program now, and also for possible mid-season trades for pieces missing for a playoff run. Smart. Some of these kid pitchers can really pitch.

You want your best arms on the 25 man roster. Period. Later on, it is possible that a few could get the chance to start with veteran starters retiring. You want a full stable.

So you ask, "What's missing here with all this?"

A: Simply the proven and definite two and three starters that the Mets have lost in Wheeler and Syndergaard. That's what. I really don't see them positively here right now anywhere on this roster. Guys like Carrasco (for instance) is older and still a question mark. So the Mets will have to go outside their own organization for this. The very last thing a team "should ever want" are serious risks and question marks in their starting five man rotation.

The rule of thumb here should be what the Atlanta Braves always did throughout the 1990's. One new kid AAA starter up per season for the five slot. Especially after the Glavine, Avery, Maddux, and Smoltz "fab four" had been established and made concrete. The NY Mets need to follow this strategy.
