Tom Brennan - A Perfect Day of Mets Baseball

“Hey, I see some perfectly great stuff out there!”

Perfect? Well, almost.

The Mets needed a loss to continue their hopes (through frequent losing) of securing a truly high draft pick - and Carlos Carrasco once again obliged because he once again sucked. 3-8, 6.80? 1.70 WHIP? Qualifies as “sucks”.

The Mets lost 5-3 after CC gave up 5 runs while failing to record very many outs.  He remains one of baseball's worst starters this year.

Thank you. Exactly what this team needs right now. Losses. Plenty of them.

DJ Stewart had a couple of hits in the loss.  His bat is eliciting smiles. He is well on his way to changing MLB perceptions about him…for the better. Almost as if he suddenly is living up to being the 25th overall pick in 2015. Vogelbach, I am guessing feeling the heat, hit his 12th.

In the minors, the post-trades hitting boom continues:

- 30 runs in the 4 games, and lots of hits

 - three wins with only one close loss (6-5 in extras by the Lucites).

AAA?

Vientos will be activated tomorrow, and I guess Jon Arauz will be sent down, but we'll see.

Mauricio was 3 for 5 with 2 runs scored and a steal.

- He is now 9 for 18 in his last 4 games, and that screams "Call me up."

Brandon McIlwain has a .430 OBP in 20 games in AAA, with 7 steals.  Sweet. He may just be legit. Let's go, Brandon.

Vasil tossed 6 very good innings. One run.

In AA, JT Schwartz followed his 4 RBI grand slam Friday with 3 hits and 3 RBIs Saturday.  42 RBIs in 205 at bats and hitting .298?  .347/.449/.520 in 21 August games, with 16 RBIs?

He is making a good impression, adding a now-dangerous bat to his fine fielding.

Stay healthy, play them all the rest of the way, JT. Then Arizona Fall ball.

Give him a AAA promotion reward, too, in September if he does.

Beyond Binghamton, Brooklyn won 8-5 and is beginning brutal bashing.

In the past week, 49 runs in 6 games and .276. Just .212 hitting in April thru June, then .245 and a HR a game since, with 240 runs in 47 games.

Yes…

A perfect day of baseball.  Even if St Lucie lost that tight (man starting the inning on 2nd base) game in extras.

Short TB recap - time to wrap it up.

Have a perfectly happy Sunday.

I perfectly know you will.

Well, I did miss Alonso getting “mildly” beaned last night. That sure seems to happen a lot to Mets hitters, and Pete, huh?

But still no punches or retaliation pitch

Wussies

Time for the Mets to cut ties with Carrasco. Anyone have a cookie cutter handy?

Vasil should get a look in that rotation spot.

Odd minors stat-- Brooklyn scored 8 Runs on 13 Hits last night, and the red-hot Jett had ZERO of them.

This kid Schwartz might be something. I’m keeping my eye on him.

He did walk twice, though.

Pete's been hit 17 times this year. Number of retaliation, ZERO. I think maybe Pete wants to play for a team that has his back. That ain't the sissified Mets

Apesquat, another reason for Pete to want to depart. Shohei, meanwhile, has been hit 12 times…over the last 3 full seasons.

It is not just raw overall numbers with Schwartz…with 2 outs and RISP this season, .356/.420/.511. THAT is valuable.

Tom, I really do believe the lack of retaliation will be a factor in Pete's decision to hit free agency. It's beyond ridiculous. Watched a video of Bert Campaneris throwing his bat at a pitcher for hitting him in the foot! Pure gold

Good morning! Some of my two cents:

- Buck Showalter actually is concerned about Pete getting hit. Now, if he only had some balls…. I maintain he isn’t the same person this year.
- Lindor says that he doesn’t know what the answer is and hitting another player isn’t it. Maybe…
- It was annoying to see all the teams with similar loss amounts to the Mets all lose last night, but at least the Mets kept up.
- From the LOL DEPT: How much longer will SNY keep giving us updates on the Mets wildcard positioning?
- It isn’t where you finish the season, it’s where you land after the lottery that determines whether you keep your spot or not, right?
- Corrasco is washed up, but who is left to throw? That’s what we say, what the Rays say is just bring him here and he’ll win 20.
- Looking at the Mets lineup last night: Mendick, Ortega, Arrauz all have to go. Vogelbach is a waste and he can keep his meaningless HR’s. He absolutely sucks and doesn’t play to his skill level. A big strong slow guy acts like he is a leadoff hitter.
- Alvarez is ice cold.
- Ohtani is pretty good.
- Can Pete Alonso become an all around hitter?
- Is it a mirage or is the Mets bullpen coming around?

Apesquat, being a piƱata and playing in a home park that costs him a half dozen homers a year PLUS NY’s insane tax rates on high earners could make a state like Texas look mighty attractive to Pete.

Gus, it’s a mirage. Like a drowning swimmer rising above the water for a gulp of air. (Little strong there, I know).

Hit the other team’s guys - or at least make them dance and dive. All about messaging.

Carrasco with the Mets seeking draft solace is their current MVP.

You left out Locastro. He just legally changed his name to Low Castro.

You know Tom, I’ve been thinking about the tax difference thing and that seems to be a disadvantage for some teams. Not that I’m crying for these guys, but it really is alot of money to lose if you live in a state like New York or California or Illinois.

At this point, I’d rather reward my minor league players that may not get much of a chance like Suozzi than having a 32 year old Ortega on the team. I mean, 32 years old? Is he in your future? Screw Locastro too. Arrauz is 25, at least.

Can we all pitch in a buy a plane ticket for Ronnie because thats the only way he get here and it's crazy. What's the excuse now except were really going for the draft pick. Buck needs to get one off his head to loosen the cobwebs what a woose.

My Sunday thoughts

1. Play the string out

2. Leave the scrubs in Queens. Don't need any last minute injuries of core players in September

3. Let Vientos Baty and Mauricio finish up at AAA

4. New policy until the end of the season... hit us we hit you back

5. Give Butto his last chance... DFA Carrasco and start him in his place

6. Make strategic moves in chain to firm up teams for upcoming playoffs

7. Extend Pete NOW to send positive sign to core

8. Make arrangements needed for top DSL players you project coming stateside next season to visit Lucy complex for a month to train

9. Hire 50 more scouts

10. Hire 25 more nerds

Tom Brennan said...

Carrasco is our draft MVP, has to stay. Butto is probably his equal, so either is fine.

I had heard Vientos would be back today.

I get into the “Pete now” thing tomorrow indirectly, but quietly, Pete must be seething over his lack of extension. He won’t give a hometown discount.

Mack, like your DSL and scouts idea. Nerds? I’m retired.

Baltimore closer suffered UCL injury. The pitcher’s curse.

Mack Ade said...

There seems to be a need for analytics in this game and maybe the Mets just have the wrong nerds in the compound

Regarding St. Lucie

I think only Wilfredo Lara should beat the hurricane and ship out to Brooklyn

Mr Mack, day by day I am more sure th Mets get that lottery ticket. There not to good, there going to loose a lot more games.
