Savage Views - 15 Games In

SAVAGE VIEWS – Fifteen Games In

As I write this column,  the Mets have played 15 games and are a satisfying 10 and 5. Here are my thoughts for the week.

ALONSO FOR MVP

At this point in the season our boy Pete is a serious contender for most valuable player. Wouldn’t it be something if Pete continues to produce at this level for the balance of the season. He’s got 18 RBI’s and batting .321 thus far. He has as many runs batted in as the next three Mets players combined. It would be appropriate if Pete becomes our first ever MVP.

SOSO SOTO

I know it’s early, but we are still waiting for the real Soto to show up. What’s funny is that his fielding has been better than his hitting. We all expect him to break out any day. Tonight, against the Twins would be a good time to start.

 STARTING PITCHING

No one expected an ERA of 2.30 after 15 games. It was good to see Senga have a terrific outing yesterday. The first pitcher to go seven innings this year. It’s time for the rest of the staff to step up starting with Clay Holmes Monday night. David Peterson needs to better manage his pitch counts and be more aggressive on the mound. Megill has looked pretty good in the early going but it’s time to start making it into the seventh inning. As far as Canning goes, let’s hope we start scoring some runs to bail him out.

BOTTOM FOUR

Someone needs to explain why Siri is a Met and Harrison Bader is not. Over the years we have had too many ”Siri’s” on the team who struggle to meet the Mendoza line. Vientos and Baty have recently shown signs of life. With Siri likely to wind up on the IL why not give Acuna a chance to play CF. This would allow a lineup to include Baty, Vientos and Acuna on a regular basis. I’m surprised that Marte is still part of the team. Thought he would have been traded by now – maybe when McNeil returns. Torrens has been a god send. Terrific defense along with a better than expected bat.

LOOKING FORWARD

The next seven games are against opponents that are very beatable. On the other hand we have shown the ability to be dominated by someone called up from the minors for the game. Be great if our bullpen continues to hold its own.

Pete

if POTUS can send that guy named Steve to Moscow and sit for five hours with Putin, Uncle Steve needs to send Stearns to the west coast and sit five hours with Boras

Soto

Will be fine, especially after that homer last night that may shake the rust off

My spin is he gas mentally been focusing too much on improving his D, rather than doing what he is paid to do

Starters

Let's temper this enthusiasm a little and realize the early schedule resembles most of those 15 games again teams with AA level bats

Bottom 4

Thought you were talking about the MaGuire Sisters

Or was that three?

You mean it's going to get even easier?

I blame Soto "So-So" on the weather (career-wise, April has been by far his least productive) and having a cold Lindor ahead of him, AND the friggin" cold weather. I saw Bahamian-born Jazz Chisolm complain about how awful the weather is to play in, "but we're pros and need to be ready" or some such. Pete is not bothered by the cold - many hitters are. Vientos and Soto and Taylor and....heck, everyone not named Pete.

Braves' bats are heating up - the Mets need to stay HOT HOT HOT

Steve Cohen, enclose Citi Field.

11-5 projects out to a 111 win season. I'll take it.

Last year, Bader was hot at the start, then did a Bader Fader. This year with Cards, 8 RBIs in first 5 games. 5 for 27 since. His Bader Fader seems to be starting earlier this year. Still, Bader > Baty.

Siri and his .050 batting average will be "sorely" missed.

If Bader's "payroll salary" was not $6.25 million, subject to big tax, but was more like $3 million, the Mets would have kept him and skipped Siri.

Siri in 2024 and 2025 in 422 at bats? .180. You don't sign .180 hitters as a general rule. Why? Because .180 sucks.

I wouldn't be surprised if Soto had a so-so first year with the Mets. Its an usual pattern with a Mets player coming in with a big contract.

Going on memory here but Beltran first year wasn't great, Lindor first year. Is Soto next?, Who knows, he is adjusting to the NL and a new team.

The only reason Siri will remain a Met, at least until someone from the minors steps up to replace him is that Winkler/Marte can't play the outfield.

Taylor is a perfect 4/5th outfielder at best.

Now is the perfect time to give Acuna some time in CF. But boy does he look good at 2B.

Let's not forget that a majority of the comments on this site last year were in favor of letting Bader walk. People forget that hitting has its ups and downs, and if you give up on a guy that's down, you forego his ups. You don't throw out a prime rib because there is fat on it.

JoeP, Tyrone is a 4th/5th outfielder who had been far less than perfect this year, but it is early. And COLD…oh, I already said that.
