Paul Articulates - No joy in Metsville

With the 2025 season in the books and free agency underway, the next big event in Major League Baseball is the awards season, which is already underway.  Unfortunately, just as the regular season went bust, so will awards season for the Mets.
No awards are anticipated to make their way to Queens.

The Gold Gloves were awarded on November 2nd, and none were Mets.  Only David Peterson and Luis Torrens were considered finalists with neither favored to win.  Once again Jeff McNeil was snubbed as a utility player.

The Roberto Clemente award went to Mookie Betts back on October 28th.  Francisco Lindor was the very worthy NY Mets nominee.

The remaining awards and their dates are as follows:

Monday, November 10: Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year Awards

Tuesday, November 11: Manager of the Year Awards

Wednesday, November 12: Cy Young Awards

Thursday, November 13: MVP Awards

Juan Soto is a finalist in the MVP voting, but don't go to Las Vegas to vote on him, as Shohei Ohtani will be a runaway in the National League.

It was not unexpected that the Mets would be shut out of the awards in 2025 - they had a disappointing season by all expectations.  Some of the players had good individual seasons and produced some notable results, but when a team goes down in flames like the Mets did, everyone smells like smoke.

More bad news this week included:

Both Pete Alonso (expected) and Edwin Diaz (not quite expected) opting for free agency.  This does not mean that both are lost to the club, but it will take more money over a longer time to entice them back.

Meanwhile, Frankie Montas opted in when most fans hoped he would not.  He will spend the entire 2026 season on the IL recovering from Tommy John surgery.

The Mets let Drew Smith walk, probably figuring that he has had plenty of opportunity over the last eight injury-riddled years to prove that he could sustain a contribution to the club.

AJ Minter is back, opting in, but no one knows if the post-surgery Minter will look like pre-surgery Minter.  He tore the lat muscle right off the bone back in May for those who remember.

Along with that, there were also several Mets that became free agents as expected:

Pitchers: Gregory Soto, Ryan Helsley, Griffin Canning, Tyler Rogers, and Ryne Stanek

Position players: Starling Marte,  Cedric Mullins, and Jesse Winker

All of this player activity adds up to a very busy off-season for the Mets' front office.  That busy time started slowly and very un-spectacularly with three announcements: Signed lefty Brandon Waddell; The Mets decided to pick up the club option for Brooks Raley; Acquired righty Joey Geber from the Rays.

It is a long road from here to joy in Metsville.

Morning boss.

Where do I begin...

IMO

1, It will be interesting to see if the Mets offer Peterson arbitration. I would if I thought he could help the pen this year. If not, I wouldn't, I have enough much high paid reclamation projects in camp.

2. Torrens is going to be the backup catcher until something better comes along. It won't be Parada. He can't catch. It won't be Suero. He will be traded. And it won't be Yovanny. He will become the starter. It will be Alvarez or he will become the DH

3. Soto may pass on the MVP thingy and put a bobble-head of himself on the seat instead.

4. Diaz will be back

5. Pete will not ( I go back and forth on this one)

6. Montas will become the poster child of a bad deal

7. No one will pick up Smith and he will resign with Mets under a minor league deal

8. Mets will resign one of Rogers or Helsley

9. Raley makes a lot of sense to me

10. Waddell and Gerber do not

Mack, I agree with you on Drew Smith. They didn’t have to pay him last year, but they like him, and vice versa. He may have had a wink-wink with the Mets to agree to not be retained, temporarily, and sign back for less. Like Raley retention. Time for Stearns to break out his deal book.

We had a bad defensive team, so from a Gold Glove perspective, that has to weigh in a bit to the selectors.

Peterson was only like 6th in ×DRS

Good morning all. Hi Mack. From 2024’s second half through the ‘25 all-star game (which he made), Peterson put together a helluva full season. The peripherals weren’t ace-like, but for a #3/4 starter, he was great. I have to think they offer him arbitration and see if they can coax him through more innings in ‘26. Also, as to Torrens, I’m completely happy with him as our backup catcher for the foreseeable future. The guy might be the best backup catcher in the league.

Morning "Song For Adam"

Let's remember I was a BIG Peterson fan. Considered him as SP1 for the first half of last season

But

There are only six slots in the rotation

McLean and Sproat changes everything

Holmes has to return

Senga is a great starter when he is healthy... and he will be at ST

That's four of five slots and we haven't even got to the big contract guys

That Adam Smith said...

Assuming that everyone gets through ST healthy (fingers crossed), I’d guess that Sproat starts in AAA and the rotation is McLean, Holmes, Senga, Manea, Peterson, and one #1/2 that we trade for. It’s not impossible that Peterson is traded, but if he’s here I do think he starts the season in the rotation. 🤷

Sproat in rotation, Holmes to BP.

I really like Suero - would hate to see him traded as he is really the best in the prospect bunch. Torrens is a fantastic catcher - we are lucky to have him as a backup.

I will put my money on Sproat starting in AAA. He returns to the majors upon first injury or failure in the rotation, which will be early.

Holmes is an interesting one. He had a successful transitional starter year (although he definitely needs to go 6 much more often to continue). They signed under the mutual expectation he would start - that was the deal.

From a player perspective, if the team renegs, does that hurt them reputationally?

From team perspective, would be very useful to put him in the pen & give his spot to Sproat (& pick up external #1 offseason).

Given they will likely ease starters into innings early in the season, they could be more structured with piggy back outings & see who is crushing it & who needs to move.

Their approach will be something to watch for sure
