SOME YOUTHS’ DORMANT BATS HAVE BECOME VOLCANIC
I did not see the Mets game last night, but I turned on the 60 Minute Rewind for just a second this morning to see sizzling Carson Benge rope a ball the a scorcher off the wall in right center for a double.
It always crosses my mind when I see things like that, with a guy in a heated race for rookie of the year, to wonder what would happen if the fences were in a few feet closer, to make it more comparable to Cincinnati, where one of his key opponents for rookie of the year is playing well. A few feet shorter annd that is an 2 run homer instead of a run scoring double.
I only bring this up again in case Steve Cohen decides that he wants to do some more landscaping in the off season and move those fences in just a little bit, to make the part cozier for the hitters. Happy hitters excited fans.
Anyway, it is wise to never give up on a young player during the season.
Before the last two games of July, I do not think that Yonatan Henriquez could’ve been having a worse year. He was a flop with the bat in Brooklyn.
But starting with the last two games in July, he’s gone 32 for 101 (.318). He had 10 doubles, seven home runs, 10 walks, and a super duper 27 RBIs in that stretch. A completely and totally different person. Rock on!
Marco Vargas was also doing poorly and was injured much of the season. Then, he got healthy, and in Binghamton, he is a sizzling 26 for his last 80 (.325). With 9 of 9 in steals.
Both Henriquez and Vargas are switch hitters and still 21. So, while no one talks about them as prospects, maybe they should, based on their recent noted production.
Lastly, Jacob Reimer, even when he finally gets healthy and plays well, is a bit of a head scratcher. He is .297/.372/.378 in August, but with just 4 extra base hits, puzzling for a guy with pop. But he has driven in 17 in 19 August games, so he is producing.
He was also 4 for 11 with 3 XBH in 3 rehab games in late July, so he’s had quite a good stretch. But I am still waiting for him to break out.
Really lastly, about Chris Suero? .260 with power in August. He must like having good hitters finally surrounding him.
Really, really lastly? Billy Amick’s 2 RBIs last night give him 101 on the season. In just 106 games. Wow.

Name the last Mets’top minor league prospect with 101 RBIs in 106 games or less in a season. Amick has < 700 pro at bats and is doing that.
Alonso had 119 RBIs in 132 games in 2018, his 3rd pro season. He did have 67 in 67 games after being promoted to AAA that year.

It is amazing how hitting is contagious. Brooklyn and Binghamton combined were hitting in the .190s thru Memorial Day. August has been a minor league hitting party, night and day better than early in the season. Everybody (except Clifford) has jumped in.
One concern I have: we all know Hayden Senger can’t hit. Then why is Morabito (.253) just 34 points higher than Senger? I’m a little disappointed with Nick this year, despite his .354 OBP and 41 steals. He needs to get that average UP.

Meanwhile, Yanks beat Boston 1-0 in a meaningful pre-playoff game in SOLD OUT Yankee Stadium. They’ve weathered severe setbacks. The Mets fold annually.
I really like Suero because of his versatility. On the field, he can play any position and at the plate he is close to a 20-20-20 season. If the season were longer, I would advocate for him to start seeing AAA pitching right away.

Do you remember horrible as a Met Paul Blackburn? He had a 6.00 Mets ERA Iin 48 Mets innings. Now? 76 Yankee innings this year, 6-2, 1.67 ERA. SMH. There is something about wearing pinstripes.
Alonso scorching this month, and just four HRs away from 300 career blasts. He’d have even more, but the Mets promoted him a year later than this current team woul have, so his 36 HRs and 119 RBIs in 2018 were all wasted in the minors.
The Wilpons likelywould have not promoted Benge until September 2026.
wonder how many HR's Mets produced in CITI vs opponents. Also, while moving fences in helps Mets, t he visiting team gets to bat also.

My reply to Mets’ pitchers with somewhat shortened fences remains consistent: pitchers can more easily adjust to shorter fences than hitters can adjust to deeper ones. Hitting is the hardest thing to do in sports.
I will just add this little point. The Mets have hit 79 HR in 69 home games (1.14), but 84 in 66 away games (1.27). There should be IMO a slight home advantage for its hitters. So, that means to me that if away HRs are 1.27 per game, Cit HRs should be 1.35 per game. The difference between 1.35 and 1.17 over 81 games is 17 homers lost. I imagine if Mets hitters hit a total of 17 more HRs, they’d smile a little more widely.
It sure works for Philly. 91 Philly blasts at home, vs. just 71 on the road. They’re smiling. And winning.
