2025 Draft Prospect - #4 - RHP - Tyler Bremner - UC Santa Barbara

On 12-5-24, MLB.com posted their top 100 prospects in the upcoming draft. Beginning 2-2-25, we will post it in backward order, ending with the pick for 1.1

https://www.mlb.com/prospects/2025/draft/  -

#4

Tyler Bremner

RHP  UC Santa Barbara

20/years old

6' 2"      190

Scouting grades: Fastball: 65 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 65 | Control: 55 | Overall: 60

In his first two years at Santa Barbara, Bremner has slid back and forth between starting and relieving, finding success in both roles in 2024 to put up gaudy numbers. He began the year in the rotation but moved to the bullpen when Hudson Barrett got hurt. He was back in the rotation when Matt Ager struggled, helping the Gauchos reach (and host) a Regional.

With the chance for three plus pitches and easy velocity, Bremner has some thinking he could figure into conversations at the very top of the 2025 Draft. His fastball averaged a tick over 95 mph in 2024 and touched 98 mph with good ride, lighting up the radar gun with little effort and with some feeling there’s room for growth and more velocity to come in pro ball. His best secondary offering is his easily plus changeup that some scouts hang a 70 grade on. He’ll throw it to any hitter in any count, and it stays on the fastball plane for a long time with late, hard fade, missing bats at a 46-percent clip in 2024. His 86-88 mph slider with gyro-type shape has improved as well.

Perhaps the only question surrounding Bremner is about durability, as he’s yet to show he can handle a full season of starting. But he throws all of his pitches for strikes and misses bats with all three offerings. Proving he can take the ball every Friday this spring should cement him near the top of most Draft boards.

4. Colorado Rockies: Tyler Bremner, RHP, UC Santa Barbara

UC Santa Barbara’s Tyler Bremner is the best right-handed pitcher in the 2025 MLB Draft. Standing at 6-foot-2, the 20-year-old hurler’s arsenal is led by a changeup that flummoxed hitters this past season. There are certainly legitimate questions about whether Bremner’s numbers are legit or just a reflection on facing a lesser talent pool at the collegiate level. He also carries concerns about how effective he could be over a full season since he hasn’t thrown 90-plus innings in a season entering 2025. However, the righty’s three-pitch arsenal (changeup, fastball and slider) paired with the improvements he’s made specifically with the fastball and slider bode well for his long-term development. He’d need a few years in the minors, but the Colorado Rockies need long-term pitching help and there are few things in baseball more valuable than a cost-effective quality starter.

Tyler Bremner stats (2024): 2.54 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, 104-21 K-BB, 57 hits allowed in 88.2 innings pitched

5. St. Louis Cardinals: Tyler Bremner, RHP, UC Santa Barbara Baseball

Bremner may be the best pitcher in the class. He touches 98 mph and throws strong off-speed pitches with a changeup and a slider.

He will make his case as college baseball’s top pitcher after going 11-1 with a 2.54 ERA in 88 2/3 Innings as a sophomore for the Gauchos.

Bremner could pitch his way to the No. 1 spot this season.

4. Colorado Rockies: RHP Tyler Bremner, UC Santa Barbara

Bremner spent the past two seasons bouncing between the rotation and bullpen for UC Santa Barbara, posting a 3.63 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 184 strikeouts in 144 innings spanning 17 starts and 19 relief appearances. He had a 104-to-21 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 88.2 innings in 2024, and with a polished three-pitch repertoire and plus command there is little doubt he has the stuff to start. The question is whether he can hold up over a larger workload.

The best mid-major arm in this class, RHP Tyler Bremner has a legitimate shot at being the first arm off the board thanks to fantastic athleticism, starter traits, and exceptionally loud stuff.

3. Tyler Bremner – RHP

HT/WT: 6’2/190 | Bat/Throw: R/R | School: UC Santa Barbara | Age: 21.2

The best mid-major arm in this class, Bremner has a legitimate shot at being the first arm off the board thanks to fantastic athleticism, starter traits, and exceptionally loud stuff.

Bremner’s body is uber-projectable with skinny, lanky limbs and the delivery is as easy as it can get, featuring little to no effort and excellent body control down the bump.

His case for best arm in the class gets better with the arsenal. Bremner’s fastball has seen a jump in velocity, sitting in the mid-90s presently and flashing 97-98 MPH in shorter stints with Team USA this summer. He can vary the shape of the heater, showcasing quality carry upstairs with some flatness and more tailing action at the knees.

His change-up is his bread and butter, a double-plus offering with screwball-esque shape, high spin, and excellent velocity separation off the heater in the low-80s.

Bremner has huge confidence in the pitch and can command it exceptionally to both sides of the plate. The slider has taken a jump forward, as well, becoming a two-plane monster with late bite in the upper-80s this summer.

There’s a chance for three above-average or better offerings with above-average command.

The second college starter has one of the more elite pitches in college baseball in his changeup. But, does not have quite the success and track record as a starter as Arnold. Flashes a plus fastball and slider to go along with his change. He has swing-and-miss stuff that teams covet and could see himself climb into top-3 territory with a strong 2025 season.

The best righty in the college class pitches on the west coast and the Rockies grab another hurler here. The 6-2, 190 pounder shows three plus pitches with a fastball up to 98 mph and a plus changeup. He needs innings and has some durability questions but he should go in this range next July.

3. Mariners: Tyler Bremner, RHP, UC Santa Barbara (No. 4)

Bremner has the best changeup in the Draft, not to mention a quality fastball and slider and command, so the Gauchos could produce the first college pitcher taken for the second time in 11 Drafts (Dillon Tate, 2015).

2. Los Angeles Angels

Tyler Bremner, RHP — UC Santa Barbara

HOMETOWN: San Diego, California

HEIGHT: 6-2

WEIGHT: 190

BAT/THROW: R-R

Bremner is a really nice pitching prospect who struck out 104 in just 88.2 innings this spring. He walked just 21 hitters. The fastball has teeth and is already up to 98 mph with big vertical carry. The changeup is his best secondary with some strong fading action and higher spin rates giving it arm-side action. He’s also been developing a sweeper and that’s a pitch that has taken major strides over the last calendar year.

The entire arsenal is thrown out of a deceptive slot; tough for the opposition to pick up, let alone square up. It’s all complimented by above-average control for the strike zone.

The Angels have long needed pitching and Bremner is that in spades.

8/11/24 - Sports Gambling Podcast - 2025 Mock Draft

At 6-2, 190 pounds, Bremner is an explosive metric darling. He features a mid-to-high 90s fastball with a big iVB and a deceptive delivery that allows his fastball and changeup combo to play up. Bremner was awarded the 2023 Big West Pitcher of the Year after an 11-1, 2.54 ERA, 104 K, 21 BB, 88.2 IP campaign.

link  -  RHP Tyler Bremner - UC Santa Barbara

FUN. That’s the main word I can come up with to describe Bremner’s stuff. It’s an electric factory on the mound. During the season, Bremner was mid-90s with his fastball. Tyler caught him at USA Collegiate National Team, where he was sitting 96-98. Shorter stint, but it lets you know that the upper-90s might be achievable in longer stints in due time.

He pairs that fastball with a couple of plus secondaries. The slider is disgusting, and his low-to-mid 80s changeup has a ton of spin and depth. He throws all his pitches with confidence and excellent command. He’ll embark on a junior campaign where he will continue building on an already fantastic pitch mix.

Bremner has all the makings you want to be one of the best arms in the 2025 MLB Draft class. He’ll get some solid competition from Florida State’s Jamie Arnold and prep-arm Seth Hernandez, though.

Tyler Bremner, RHP, UC Santa Barbara- Bremner’s velocity has taken a substantial leap from high school as he now pitches comfortably in the 95-96 mph range. From a three-quarter release point his arm is super quick, his head quiet and overall it’s a starter ease of operation.

He has three plus to better pitches in his fastball, breaking ball and changeup. His 79-82 mph changeup is the best of the three and grades as a 70 (plus-plus). He can land it for strikes on both sides of the plate vs right handed and left handed batters. It’s a nasty swing/miss pitch with depth and fade.

He can also manipulate the action and cut it to his gloveside. Another near 70-grade pitch is his turbo sweeper at 88-89 mph. He also flashed a plus hook with more depth and up/down break at 84 mph.

Bremner showed the best “stuff” of any pitcher I saw this summer and his changeup might be the best pitch in college baseball, comparable to Kevin Kopps’ (Arkansas) cutter in 2021. He’s also a low-pulse guy who looks to have an inner edge. Some scouts have already begun to compare Bremner to Aaron Nola.

If the 2025 draft were next week, Bremner would likely be one of the first collegians off the board.

4. Tyler Bremner, RHP, UC Santa Barbara

Speaking of college arms, Bremner is another high-upside pitcher who could pitch himself into the top five in the 2025 MLB Draft. Like Arnold, he saw mixed results as a freshman in 2023 across 55.1 innings. But he burst onto the scene in 2024 at UCSB, going 11-1 with a 2.54 ERA and 0.88 WHIP across 88.2 innings and 19 appearances.

Bremner struck out 104 compared to 21 walks, and he is a true power arm from the right side that usually sits in the upper 90s. If he has another strong year, he could definitely push to be the top arm off the board.

2025 Draft Prospect - #5 - RHP - Seth Hernandez - Corona HS (CA)

On 12-5-24, MLB.com posted their top 100 prospects in the upcoming draft. Beginning 2-2-25, we will post it in backward order, ending with the pick for 1.1

https://www.mlb.com/prospects/2025/draft/ -

#5      Seth Hernandez

           RHP   Corona (CA)

18/years old

6' 4"       190

COMMITTED - Vanderbilt

Scouting grades: Fastball: 65 | Curveball: 55 | Slider: 50 | Changeup: 60 | Control: 50 | Overall: 60

On the radar for quite some time, Hernandez started making it clear as a junior, when he won National High School Invitational MVP honors after tossing a complete-game shutout to help his Corona High School team win the tournament, that he’d be the top high school arm in the Class of 2025. He cemented it by showing elite stuff at summer showcase events like USA Baseball’s 18U National Training Camp and the Area Code Games.

Hernandez has an ideal projectable 6-foot-4 pitcher’s frame with the athleticism teams love to see from young power arms. Always on time with an online and loose delivery, Hernandez has big stuff and a feel for all four of his pitches. While he touched triple digits at the Area Code Games, he typically sits in the mid-90s, touching 97-98 mph. His best secondary offering is his changeup, and it’s plus right now, thrown with a lot of confidence and missing bats with it thanks to its good action and how it plays off of his fastball plane well. His curve, a true 12-to-6 spike curveball, has the chance to be plus with hard, tight and late action to it, sometimes registering RPMs in the 3,000 range. He started featuring a harder slider more on the showcase circuit.

In addition to his pure stuff, Hernandez does a solid job finding the zone, especially considering his age and power stuff. Committed to Vanderbilt, he gets very high marks for his work ethic, showing the ability to make adjustments and corrections to put himself in position to be one of the first pitchers taken in the 2025 Draft.

5. St. Louis Cardinals: Seth Hernandez, RHP, Corona HS

The St. Louis Cardinals are likely headed for a bit of a rebuild under Chaim Bloom and the fifth pick in the 2025 MLB Draft is a great place to start. Seth Hernandez, a 6-foot-4 righty, already offers the frame and athleticism clubs like in a prototypical pitcher. Hernandez’s makeup has reportedly drawn very high marks, per MLB.com, a characteristic that incentivizes a club to take a chance on a projectable high school pitcher. Hernandez is also enticing because of a four-pitch mix – fastball (97-98 MPH max velocity), curveball (projects to be above-average), changeup (second-best pitch) and a slider – that would provide the Cardinals organization with plenty to work from.

2. Seth Hernandez, RHP, Corona (California)

Hernandez touts a long, 6-foot-4 inch frame that helps him get up to 98 mph on the radar gun. He also touts a heavy change-up that is advanced for his age. He’s likely to be the first pitcher taken.

4. Colorado Rockies: Seth Hernandez, RHP, Corona (California)

Some feel Hernandez is the best pitcher in the draft with a 98 mph fastball, while measuring 6-foot-4 and 190 pounds.

He is the best pitcher in his high school class, and he’s committed to Vanderbilt.

The Rockies taking him here is based on the team taking long-term upside, instead of taking a player who could debut as early as 2026.

The Rockies were one of the worst teams in baseball in 2024 and have one of the better farm systems in the game at the moment, according to MLB pipeline and Baseball America.

6. Pittsburgh Pirates: RHP Seth Hernandez, Corona HS (CA)

One of three Corona High School players who could wind up hearing his name called in the first round, Hernandez enters the spring as the top prep arm in the country. With an extremely projectable 6'4", 190-pound frame and electric present stuff that includes a fastball that has touched 98 mph and a plus changeup, the Vanderbilt commit checks all the boxes to be a future ace.

4. Seth Hernandez – RHP

HT/WT: 6’4/195 | Bat/Throw: R/R | School: Corona (CA) | Commitment: Vanderbilt | Age: 19

At this stage of the 2025 cycle, there’s no better arm in the class than Hernandez.

At 6’4, 195 pounds, Hernandez has plenty of projection remaining to his frame and his operation is as easy as they come. He’s very athletic and moves fluidly down the mound with loud arm speed and a methodical nature to his timing.

His fastball has sat in the low-to-mid 90s thus far, though he’s gotten up to 96-98 MPH, even touching triple digits in shorter stints, and projects to sit closer to that mark as he fills out his frame.

He gets a solid extension and fills up the strike zone, as well as showing a tendency to miss bats on the top rail. His change-up is one of the best in the country, a low-80s parachute that flashes plus with a ton of sinking action and velocity separation from the heater.

He’ll mix in a bigger curveball in the upper-70s and a firmer cutter/slider hybrid in the mid-to-upper-80s, both of which possess spin rates near 2,700 RPMs. His secondary command will need refinement, but overall, he peppers the strike zone.

The mix of pure stuff, projection, and athleticism make him the best arm in a prep class that lacks dynamic arms. Hernandez is on the older side of the class and will be 19 on draft day. If he gets to campus, he’d be eligible as a sophomore at Vanderbilt.

8.  Seth Hernandez, RHP, Corona (Calif.) HS

A two-way guy coming into this spring, as someone who also offers plus raw power with the bat, but he is a higher-ceiling pitching prospect because of the projection to his frame as a starter with a fastball that can get into the upper 90s mixed with a hard breaking ball that has swing and miss potential.

Hernandez could go much higher than this. He’ll have the earned skepticism of being a prep right hander but he might be the best pitcher in the draft class. The 6-4, 190 pounder has the profile of a top of the rotation starter. He was stellar on the summer circuit and he’s an athletic, power arm with premium stuff.

7. Marlins: Seth Hernandez, RHP, Corona (Calif.) HS (No. 5)

Hernandez is interesting as a right fielder with well-above-average raw power and arm strength -- and more interesting as a projectable righty who can reach 98 mph with his fastball and spin a wipeout curveball.

HEIGHT: 6-4

BAT/THROW: R-R

Hernandez might not even be available this late in the Draft but they would welcome another pitching prospect as they’ve found more and more success in developing that profile of late.

The thing that immediately stands out about Hernandez at this stage is his mature pitch-ability and his natural talent to pound the strike zone. He’ll work in the low 90s, grabbing 96 with solid spin and carry through the zone. His best weapon currently is a low-80s slider with solid depth and some sweep, as well as an upper-70s changeup, killing spin well.

Hernandez has a track record against older bats and he’s shredded them up. When you consider the resume, the frame, the projection, and the present feel for the mound, there’s upside here for an impact righty at the next level.

8/11/24 - Sports Gambling Podcast - 2025 Mock Draft

Seth Hernandez, an Elite Charter Academy product and Vanderbilt commit, is a very projectable 6-4, 190 pounds RHP. He lands closed and finishes with long and whippy arm action. Hernandez’s fastball sits in the low 90s with good ride. Hernandez has two plus offspeed offerings (changeup and slider).

link  - RHP Seth Hernandez - Corona (CA)

Budgeoning stuff. That’s the name of the game for Seth Hernandez. He’s eclipsed himself as the number one arm in the country, and it is easy to see why. Tyler caught him at USA 18u just recently, and the fastball was 96-98 mph with tons of carry. It was a shorter stint, and he usually is in his low to mid-90s. That’s fantastic for a prep arm with much room to grow and a very buttery operation. He pairs that fastball with a slider and a changeup. The slider has spin rates above 2,700 RPMs, and Tyler saw it with a ton of velocity that was 85-98 mph, giving it the action of a cutter. His changeup is even filthier and creates great deception off his fastball. It drops out of zone and has a ton of depth to it. As of now, Hernandez is committed to Vanderbilt, but he expects to be one of the first arms off the board. It seems highly unlikely that he will make his way to campus.

 Tyler Jennings   @TylerJennings24

Seth Hernandez, the #1 arm in the country for a reason.

Hernandez's FB was electric, sitting 94-97 T98 with strikes and carry upstairs. Flashed a tight SL at 85-89 with cutter-esque shape and a sharp fading CH at 80.

That was loud.

Extra-large, athletic frame with broad shoulders and long limbs, lots of twitch and physical projection remaining. Ran a 6.75 60-yard dash. Primary right-handed pitcher, didn't throw in this look but consistently into the mid-90s with top of the class arsenal. Smooth actions on the approach to the ball in the outfield, clean medium length arm stroke in back with quickness to release, lots of arm strength and carry to the intended base with low effort, works through the ball well. Right-handed hitter, begins with a wide base and shows rhythm throughout, easy hand speed through the zone and able to impact the ball with authority to the pull side. Consistently on the barrel with a solid launch and plenty of leverage through the point of contact. Highest level tools across the board. Excellent student. Verbal commitment to Vanderbilt. Selected to play in the Perfect Game All-American Classic.

5. Seth Hernandez, RHP, Corona (CA) HS (Vanderbilt commit)

Hernandez, a Vanderbilt commit, looks to be the top prep arm in this draft class. Standing at 6’4, he has a big frame that allows him to reach the upper 90s with his fastball on a consistent basis.

With a couple of strong offspeed pitches to go along with his fastball, Hernandez projects well as you look into his future. It would be easy to see a MLB team fall in love with him, and him end up as a top pick.

2025 Draft Prospect - #12 - SS/RHP - Billy Carlson - Corona hS (CA)

On 12-5-24, MLB.com posted their top 100 prospects in the upcoming draft. Beginning 2-2-25, we will post it in backward order, ending with the pick for 1.1

https://www.mlb.com/prospects/2025/draft/ -

#12          Billy Carlson

Scouting grades: Hit: 55 | Power: 50 | Run: 55 | Arm: 65 | Field: 60 | Overall: 55

Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Curveball: 55 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 50 | Overall: 50

The 2025 Draft class is deep in southern California and Corona High School will be a regular stop all spring, with three potential first-round picks on the team that won USA Baseball’s National High School Invitational last year. Carlson is a legitimate two-way talent who showed off skills at shortstop and on the mound at a variety of summer showcase events including the Area Code Games and Major League Baseball’s High School All-American Game to move himself into what seems like surefire opening round consideration.

All summer, Carlson impressed with his athleticism and bat speed from the right side of the plate. It’s more of a line-drive approach at present with a good swing, but he has the chance to grow into more impact and average or better power. There’s an up arrow next to his run tool as he’s worked to get faster and could be a plus runner in time. Even with all of his offensive upside, his glove might be ahead of his bat, with some scouts putting as high as a 70 on his arm strength and defensive actions at shortstop.

On the mound, Carlson has shown a fastball consistently up to 95-96 mph with plus feel for spinning a breaking ball. There are some who like him even better on the hill. His five-tool potential at a premium position might be what gets the Tennessee recruit selected in the top half of the first round, though his age at Draft time (19) might rule out some teams.

9. Cincinnati Reds: Billy Carlson, SS, Corona HS

Billy Carlson could have a future either as a right-handed pitcher or an everyday player, but his long-term outlook might be best suited on the infield. Turning 19 a few weeks after the 2025 MLB Draft, Carlson’s best tools are his arm strength and fielding abilities, but his hit tool and power have the ceiling of being above average, too. There might not be a sky-high ceiling with Carlson, but the Cincinnati Reds would certainly love to have a well-rounded middle infielder whose power could play even better at Great American Ballpark.

7. Billy Carlson, SS/RHP, Corona (California)

Another two-way player, he’s been up to 97 mph on the mound with a very good changeup and curveball to compliment. And he’s a very good hitter, with a great contact rate. But he really turns heads in the field as arguably the best defensive shortstop in the draft.

1. Billy Carlson, SS -- Corona (Ca.)

HOMETOWN: Corona, California

HEIGHT: 6-1

WEIGHT: 176

BAT/THROW: R-R

COMMIT: Tennessee

Carlson is polished beyond his years at the plate with supreme pitch recognition and boasts strong bat-to-ball numbers against advanced velocity and tough breaking balls. Passivity early in counts has gotten him into too many pitchers' counts in the past, and strikeout numbers have been streaky because of it, but most scouts believe he has fallen victim to poor umpiring more than anything at times throughout his amateur career. Folks who have paid close attention to his game have never doubted the plan at the plate. He hits the ball on the ground a touch more than scouts would like to see, but it's something evaluators expect to improve with continued maturation and strength. He's always hit the ball with authority, especially for his size. A lean, wiry frame, Carlson projects to add weight and impact as he develops and could eventually blossom into above-average raw power, though he's made it an emphasis to stay athletic and twitchy at this stage in his career.

Carlson has a very strong arm that rivals some of the better high school shortstops of the last decade. It's comfortably plus and will play at the next level. Coupled with a soft glove and clean actions, Carlson has a chance at developing into at least an above average defensive shortstop as a pro. It's a shortstop frame with rangy actions and quick hands around the bag. He's got the best actions of any infielder in the class and is the best bet you'll find to play shortstop in the big leagues in this draft class.

Carlson also pitches and features a high-spin breaking ball with big lateral action. He's been up to 97 mph. Most believe his future is on the dirt. Carlson will be 19 years old on draft day.

Carlson's biggest vice may be how tough he can be on himself when he's struggling. It's a part of his game and mental fortitude that has improved over the last twelve months, but being the high-motor competitor he is, it may always be a small part of how he ticks.

Shortstops hailing from Southern California are always a hot commodity in every draft and Carlson fits right up there with most from the last half-decade. He's even a bit twitchier than some of those that preceded him. He'll be a hot name in July and could come off the board inside the top 10 picks.

Billy Carlson (SS/RHP), Corona High School (CA)

Carlson offers two-way potential but is best projected as a shortstop with the ability to impact the game on both sides of the ball. He has a strong arm and defensive instincts that give him a high floor, while his offensive development could turn him into a five-tool player.

Carlson's athleticism and smooth actions in the infield make him an ideal fit for a Reds system that has had success developing premium infielders.

15. Boston Red Sox: SS/RHP Billy Carlson, Corona HS (CA)

Carlson is the most well-rounded two-way player in the 2025 class with five-tool potential at shortstop and electric stuff on the mound, including a fastball that touches 96 mph and a good breaking ball. His 6'1", 160-pound frame raises some questions about his durability on the mound and he might have a higher ceiling as a shortstop, but if he comes out bigger and stronger on the mound this spring that could change. Regardless, his talent belongs somewhere in the middle of the first round.

7. Billy Carlson – SS

HT/WT: 6’1/180 | Bat/Throw: R/R | School: Corona (CA) | Commitment: Tennessee | Age: 18.11

A two-way athlete out of the loaded Corona High School roster, Carlson may just be the best shortstop defender in the class. Carlson possesses smooth, rangy actions at the “six” with bounce, soft hands, and a quick release across the infield.

His arm is very stout and grades out as plus or better at the position, too, leaving little doubt that he’ll stick at the position long term.

At the plate, his swing can get a bit steep, but there’s not a ton of whiff concerns, and stays within the strike zone. He’s beginning to lift the ball more and there’s robust power in the bat thanks to loud bat speed. It’s akin to former Tennessee standout Jordan Beck.

His athleticism and arm strength translate on the mound, as he’s been up to 96-97 MPH already with fluidity down the mound.

The secondaries are promising, as he throws a quality mid-70s curveball with depth and a mid-80s change-up with solid fading life. He’s thrown strikes at a solid clip, too. There’s a ton of upside if everything works out with Carlson. Carlson flipped from Vanderbilt to Tennessee during the fall, joining a highly touted class for Tony Vitello’s crew.

Billy Carlson, SS

Another two-way player at the top of the draft, Billy Carlson, is part of that loaded Corona HS team that could feature three first-round picks.

Thanks to his talent on the mound, Carlson has a double-plus arm and is athletic enough that he should be able to stick at shortstop long-term. He has a patient approach at the plate and has the chance for an above-average hit tool with his bat-to-ball skills.

As one of the best defensive shortstops in the class, there is a good chance his future is there, as opposed to on the mound.

Billy Carlson is a 2025 SS/RHP/2B with a 6-1 175 lb. frame from Corona, CA who attends Corona. Loose and athletic middle infielder's build. 6.68 runner in the sixty. Primary shortstop on defense, has elite level defensive tools, top of the scale arm strength and makes accurate throws, has bounce and lightness in his footwork and glides smoothly through the ball, works through everything cleanly. Right handed hitter, hits from a medium straight stance, gets coiled in his lower half with an inward toe tap, has present bat speed and gets separated well, lived on the barrel with hard pull to mid field contact. Also pitched and could be one of the top arms in the country if he choose to concentrate on pitching. Fastball topped out at 96 mph with big carry through the zone. Curveball was a hammer with 18" of IHB, also threw a nice change up. Good student, verbal commitment to Vanderbilt. Selected to play in the Perfect Game All-American Classic.

Billy Carlson, a top-five prospect and a former Vanderbilt commit, committed to Tennessee baseball on Friday.

The Corona (California) High School two-way player is ranked the No. 5 prospect in the nation by Perfect Game. Carlson is a shortstop and right-handed pitcher. He's considered to be elite defensively at shortstop, while he throws in the upper-90s on the mound.

He took an official visit to Tennessee in mid-October when the Vols faced Florida in football.

Carlson was a longtime Vanderbilt commitment, but his recruitment shifted in recent months as Vanderbilt's staff changed. The Vols got involved in Carlson's recruitment after coach Tim Corbin fired two assistants, including hitting coach Mike Baxter. Carlson looked at other options and chose Tennessee.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pound Carlson is ranked the No. 6 high school prospect in the 2025 MLB Draft by MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo.

Some might like him better on the mound, where that arm has been up to 95-96 mph at times with good breaking stuff.

2025 Draft Prospect - #26 - RHP - Kyson Witherspoon - Oklahoma

On 12-5-24, MLB.com posted their top 100 prospects in the upcoming draft. Beginning 2-2-25, we will post it in backward order, ending with the pick for 1.1

https://www.mlb.com/prospects/2025/draft/ -

#26      Kyson Witherspoon

RHP     Oklahoma

20/years old

6' 2"      206

Scouting grades: Fastball: 60 | Slider: 60 | Changeup: 45 | Control: 45 | Overall: 50

Scouts have followed the Witherspoon twins since high school, with the Diamondbacks trying to sign Malachi to an over-slot bonus as a 12th-rounder in 2022. Though they have similar stuff, Kyson since has surpassed him as a prospect after performing significantly better in their first two college seasons at Northwest Florida State JC and Oklahoma. He has much more of a starter look and could climb into the first round in a thin college pitching class.

Witherspoon has swing-and-miss stuff, starting with a mid-90s fastball that peaks at 99 mph and stands out more for its power than its modest life. His mid-80s slider can touch 91 mph while featuring both horizontal action and depth, and he'll occasionally turn it into a low-90s cutter. His upper-80s changeup is a work in progress that gets too firm but will show interesting fade at times.

Witherspoon uses a compact arm action to generate quality stuff with little effort. With his athleticism and mechanics, he should be able to develop at least average control and command. When he misses the strike zone, he often does so by too big a margin to induce chases, and improved ability to locate his pitches could make him even more overpowering.

19. Baltimore Orioles: Kyson Witherspoon, RHP, Oklahoma

Kyson Witherspoon, the 20-year-old junior college transfer, had an impressive 2024 season for Oklahoma. Over 17 games (11 starts), Witherspoon had 90 strikeouts in 80 innings, averaging 10.1 whiffs per nine innings. However, he did give up 40 walks, so he needs to work on his control. He has an above-average fastball and slider which play well. The O’s have an overabundance of position player prospects, but not on the pitching side. Witherspoon could change that.

20. Kyson Witherspoon – RHP

HT/WT: 6’2/206 | Bat/Throw: R/R | School: Oklahoma | Age: 20.11

A native of Jacksonville, Florida, Witherspoon attended Northwest Florida State College before transferring to Oklahoma with his twin brother, Malachi.

While Malachi boasts the louder pitch mix, Kyson excelled in a starter’s role for the Sooners in 2024, striking out 90 batters in 80 innings to the tune of a 3.71 ERA.

This culminated in an appearance for Team USA and a stint with the Chatham Anglers, both of which produced loud appearances and cemented his status on the circuit.

Kyson’s one-two punch with his fastball and slider is utterly dynamic. The heater has sat in the mid-90s and reached upwards of 99 MPH with excellent life on the top rail of the strike zone, averaging over 17 inches of vertical carry with some arm-side run.

His mid-80s slider is a plus offering with bullet-esque shape, firming up into a cutter around the 90 MPH mark. There’s excellent bite with some late sweep, averaging close to five inches of horizontal movement.

He’s tinkered with a solid change-up with tumble and fade in the upper-80s, flashing average or better with a whiff rate over 45%.

His arm action gets inconsistent and stabby, leading to command woes, but he fills up the strike zone and has a good chance to start long-term.

Witherspoon's power fastball/slider combo and the lack of slam-dunk college starters could allow him to rocket up Draft boards if he has a big spring.

8/11/24 - Sports Gambling Podcast - 2025 Mock Draft

Kyson Witherspoon is an intriguing power pitcher who can pepper the high 90s. He supports the heater with a hard slider and can throw a changeup and curveball- consistent command is a work in progress, but he mowed down Big 12 competition in his Sophomore year. Witherspoon posted an 8-3 record with a 3.71 ERA, 90 K, 40 BB, and 80 innings pitched.
