ESPN.com: Campbell pinch single breaks tie, helps Mets beat Miami 5-1. “Lucas Duda drove a ball over right fielder Cole Gillespie for a single leading off the eighth against Mike Dunn (1-5) and Travis d'Arnaud followed with a base hit. Campbell, a .181 hitter batting for Niese, poked a soft line drive into shallow left field over the outstretched glove of shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria. Lagares, batting in the 9 hole, tripled to make it 4-1 and scored on Curtis Granderson's double.

NY Post: “The Mets (57-50) won their second straight road game in the same series for the first time since May 10, when they beat the Phillies. This victory allowed the Mets to remain one game ahead of Washington in the NL East…Niese (W,6-9) gave the Mets a second straight superb performance, allowing one run on four hits over seven innings. The lefty surrendered only one hit after the fourth inning and retired eight of the last nine batters he faced.”

The Nationals beat the D-Backs 5-4 to keep pace with the Mets and stay 1 game back.

Year: 2015; Game #94; Tuesday;  Jul 21, NYM 7 @ WSN2; boxscore  WP: deGrom; LP: Ross; Time: 02:54; NIGHT; Attendance: 37,721; Record: 49-45; Standings: 2; Games up/behind: 2; W;

Mets rebound in game 2 of this critical series as Jacob deGrom allows just 2 runs and the Mets get some timely pinch hitting from Eric Campbell and 2 National errors to take a 3-2 lead in the 7th.  They add 4 more runs in the 9th.

Mike Puma NY Post: Eric Campbell rescues DeGrom as Mets even series with Nats. "Terry Collins may have seemed crazy Tuesday for removing ace Jacob deGrom — a good-hitting pitcher — at 82 pitches from a game the Mets trailed by one run in the seventh inning and then summoning someone other than Michael Cuddyer to hit, but Eric Campbell rewarded the manager’s faith in him...Campbell ...smacked Aaron Barrett’s 0-1 breaking ball to right field to give the Mets a 3-2 lead. The Mets, who moved within two games of the Nationals in the NL East, padded that lead with four runs in the ninth."

Baseball Reference: The Mets strand 25 base-runners but manage to defeat the Cardinals, 3 - 1, in 18 innings. Ruben Tejada drives in the winning run with a sacrifice fly and Eric Campbell follows with a successful squeeze bunt as the Mets go 1-for-26 with runners in scoring position. Starter Carlos Martinez is pressed into service for the Cards and takes the loss, pitching 4 innings. The game is scoreless for 12 innings, until Kevin Plawecki drives in a run for the Mets in the 13th, but Kolten Wong replies with a solo homer.

NY Post: Mets eke few runs across to survive agonizingmarathon. “A blind squirrel will find acorns — eventually. In the Mets’ case it took until the 13th inning Sunday to find their first run, and victory couldn’t be claimed until the 18th. But after such an atrocious afternoon and early evening offensively, the Mets were in no position to complain.”

Mets gained ground on Washington as the Dodgers beat the Nats, 5-0.

The Morning Report 5.18.2015 | Marlins Fire Mike Redmond, Flores Being Flores, Murphy on the Trade Block?, Campbell Provides a Spark

David Wright Injury Tracker | Scheduled to Resume Baseball Activities Today

Adam Rubin | ESPN New York- The Miami Marlins fired manager Mike Redmond on Sunday and plan to announce his replacement Monday at 11 a.m. ET. But they have not contacted the New York Mets about hiring Triple-A Las Vegas manager Wally Backman as Redmond's successor, two Mets officials told ESPN.com. Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria reportedly was asking about Backman in April, when Miami was playing at Citi Field and the Marlins were stumbling to open the season. Las Vegas entered Sunday with a 25-12 record under Backman.

(Chris Soto: Boy...the favorites to win the 2nd Wild Card this season are really having a tough time so far this year. Honestly though, Can't really say I'm surprised by it. All off-season while the Marlins were getting so much love...pundits were quick to point out that the club's SP was probably the weakest in the division. With no Jose Fernandez until late June, damaged goods in Mat Latos, and injuries to Henderson Alvarez, who's periphals pointed to regression anyway, the Marlins were always pegged to struggle to limit runs.)

{UPDATE: The Marlins have hired their General Manager Dan Jennings as the club's new Field Manager.}

(Chris Soto: Huh.....ok.....talk about a shocker to top all shockers. Jennings has zero professional managerial experience and is coming into a situations were the Marlins need to turn it around and quick or else risks losing too much ground on the Wild Card race.)

Matt Turner | RantSports- When Wilmer Flores was chosen as the starting shortstop of 2015, the New York Mets knew exactly what type of player he was: one who could give you offensive production, while simultaneously giving you sub-par play in the field. Nearly a quarter of the way through the season, he’s fit the script perfectly. Although his .250 average isn’t quite what the Mets would like, he does lead the team with six home runs. In fact, he’s the only shortstop to be leading his team in home runs. It says something about the Mets’ offensive production, yes, but it also shows that Flores is no slouch at the plate. If he continues at this pace, 20 home runs by the end of the season is more than probable — it’s likely.

(Chris Soto: Thank you for pointing out what should've been pointed out weeks ago. This is Wilmer Flores folks. Anyone who was expecting anything different was kidding themselves. Flores currently T-1st in HR, 10th in Runs, RBI, K rate, and 5th in Isolated Power. The odd thing is that Flores still has a +2.0 defensive value.....but how? Well put simply, WAR stands for Wins ABOVE replacement. Surprisingly, SS around the entire MLB seem to be struggling defensively. Flores' +/- 0 Defensive Runs Saved is still good for an 11th place tie. The guys behind him, Didi Gregorius & Jhonny Peralta [-1], Starlin Castro, Alexei Ramirez, & Everth Cabrera [-3], Ian Desmond [-4], Elvis Andrus [-5], and Danny Santana [-8]. Be aware folks.....this is a problem not just affecting the Mets.)

Joe D. | MetsMerized Online- The Mets could eventually trade Daniel Murphy so that they could promote infielder Matt Reynolds to play shortstop and then have Wilmer Flores slide over to second base. Any change would not happen right away until a market for Murphy developed. Additionally it would all hinge on having a healthy  David Wright back in the lineup. The Mets have resisted promoting Matt Reynolds, mostly because they want to ensure he plays everyday, and with Murphy on the team it’s unlikely he would get enough playing time. One other potential concern is a divided feeling in the front office on whether Reynolds can be an everyday shortstop.

(Chris Soto: At this current point in time....I don't know how you can afford to trade Murphy with Wright and d'Arnaud still on the shelf. That said, if both guys come back healthy and producing...it becomes far more likely. I too though have heard the concerns about Reynolds as a full time SS. The difference between concerns for him and Flores though is that, Flores is defensive liability with the glove and his footwork. The concern with Reynolds is around his arm strength and whether he is able to gun down the speedier guys in the league from deep in the whole. )

J.P. Pelzman | NJ Advance Media- Eric Campbell got on a red-eye flight Friday night in Las Vegas and landed at LaGuardia Airport at 6 a.m. Saturday. But as you might imagine, he really didn’t mind the trip. "It’s better coming this way than going that way," Campbell said with a smile Saturday afternoon after being recalled by the Mets from Class AAA Las Vegas for the second time this season. Campbell said he made some "minor adjustments" to his stance during his stay in Vegas, but didn’t change his swing.

(Chris Soto: I was saying last week that the Mets needed to bring someone who was HOT down in AAA to provide a short term spark in the line-up. Campbell was cruising along with a .367 AVG and a 1.203 OPS during his latest stint in AAA so he was about as HOT as you can be. The Mets bring him up and what happens? How about 4 for 9, 3 runs scored, 2 doubles and 2 RBIs in his first 2 games back. Total Mets runs scored....19. Hang with em Soup!)

The Morning Report 3.25.2015 | The Harvey Effect, Injury Updates, Muno vs Campbell, Gee the Survivor

Injury Updates (Chris Soto) - Both 2B Daniel Murphy and SS Wilmer Flores have been cleared to resume baseball activities. According to the front office both are likely to be ready for Opening Day. On the other hand, RHRP Victor Black is unlikely to be ready for the start of the season as he is still suffering from shoulder inflammation/weakness. Thank goodness. A team can take blows to the bullpen and still keep chugging along....but losing both guys from the middle of the diamond, who are excellent hitters, could have really made those first 3 games against the Nationals tough.)

Camp Thoughts (Chris Soto)- With Murphy and Flores both returning, IF Matt Reynolds chances of making the club have probably diminished significantly. However, in IF Daniel Muno's case, even with healthy returns, he may still make the club. Muno continues to put SIGNIFICANT pressure on Eric Campbell's roster spot as the 5th bench guy. The role they are fighting for is primarily as a pinch hitter as well as the back-up 3B. The club has already seen what Campbell can do, he was excellent when he first came up but faded as the season went alone. He also K'd at a ridiculous 26% rate. Muno on the other hand is a switch hitter, high OBP guy, with some sneaky good power and speed. Don't be surprised if he takes Soup's spot.

Mike Vaccaro | New York Post- Every athlete is in harm’s way, to some degree, but, no one voluntarily plunges themselves and their meal ticket into a fire quite like pitchers.“I have a lot of gratitude for this life and this game, and I’ve learned to realize how fast it can turn the other way and be gone from you,” Dillon Gee said. “A lot of times nobody thinks about it until you get that first setback. Then it takes some getting used to, because you have that thought in back of your mind, maybe you’re timid, a little scared getting over that hump.”

(Chris Soto: Not many fans have forgotten that Gee has suffered some injuries of his own. He was having an excellent season in 2012 before a blood clot cut off the blood circulation in arm and caused him to miss the rest of the season. Last year he strained his Lat muscle which caused him to miss a few weeks as well. The man is hungry to show that he belongs. Quite frankly, when Gee is on, he's REALLY good. During the second half of the 2013 season he went 5-4 with a 2.74 ERA while holding batters to a .243 ERA. That's solid  #3 SP caliber numbers.)

10/19/11

Cutnpaste: - Eric Campbell, Johnny Lowe, 2012 Catchers, 2012 Pitching, Jose

10-10-11: - https://mail.google.com/mail/?shva=1#inbox/132edccbf718965f - Eric Campbell backed up at first on his tour all over the diamond. He played 43 games at first, 56 at third and 25 in the outfield, while committing 20 errors. Few players in the system could match Campbell for a disappointing first half (.210/.334/.272 in 257 AB), but the 24-year old turned it on after the all-star brea (.311/.364/.466). As someone who can play either infield corner or left field, he has organizational value.

There was Mike, and Deb, and Gary G, and Dingo (whom I called Dingbat, all in affectionate terms), and there was Johnny. At the time, there was a song by The Killers called “Uncle Jonny,” and in our email exchanges I called him, “Uncle Johnny” or “Uncle J.” We were bonded by our love for the Mets. We also had some other things in common, like our political and social beliefs, and even music. I usually don’t preclude anyone who doesn’t share my political or social beliefs from being a good person, but that of course just gave him favorable points in my eyes. He disliked living in Florida, which kept him away from seeing the Mets, but he loved his family, wife Stacey and their son Asher. I could poke fun at him. There was one instance when A-Rod opted out of his contract during the 2007 World Series, and he thought the Mets should go after him. I disagreed. He told me that A-Rod won a Gold Glove, which made him a good defensive player…I told him that I called him “E-Rod,” that only the Yankees would put someone at 3B who was the best SS in the league, and that Gold Gloves meant nothing since Bobby Abreu once won one. He said Bobby Abreu was a fine caliber outfielder who deserved it. My response was to use an emoticon that showed a smiley face being pulled up to the spaceship. I told him to “Say ‘HI’ to Elvis for me!” It was all in good fun. Johnny was one of those guys who always had a great attitude, even if you disagreed with him. - http://galforallseasons.com/2011/10/13/this-one-is-for-uncle-johnny

With the World Series set to begin in a couple days, the offseason is right around the corner. The offseason is a long, grueling process, but it can certainly be exciting. The New York Mets' front office is currently in offseason mode and they have been ready for this season to end for a while now. Once the World Series comes to an end, Sandy Alderson can really start to get his hands dirty.  Catcher was a rough position for the Mets this season. The Mets went into the season with a lot of confidence in their young backstop, Josh Thole. Thole was coming off an impressive spring training and expectations were high.  It turned out that the expectations were unrealistic ones and Thole struggled to get in a groove this season. Thole showed a lot of pop in his bat in spring training, but he only managed to hit a mere three home runs this season. His low home run output coupled with his .268 average left little to be desired. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/898669-new-york-mets-offseason-outlook-catcher

In addition to Santana, the Mets' starting rotation next year will likely be comprised of returning starters R.A Dickey, Mike Pelfrey, Jon Niese and Dillon Gee. The four had a combined 4.21 ERA last year. While the starting rotation looks rather pedestrian, there is hope for the future. Four prospects — Wheeler, Matt Harvey, Jeurys Familia and Jenrry Mejia — are all 22 or younger and have the potential to be solid starting pitchers. But Mejia will likely be the only pitcher of the bunch to start the season with the big league club, as the other young arms still need a season or two to develop in the minors. One of the most urgent needs for the Mets is a closer. After trading away Rodriguez last season, the Mets were left without anyone in the bullpen who could reliably fill his spot. Luckily for the Mets, there will be several big name closers on the market this winter, including Heath Bell and Jonathon Papelbon. Because the market will be flooded with competent relievers, the Mets should try to sign a big name closer at a bargain. http://www.nyunews.com/sports/2011/10/18/18mets

After another disappointing season for the New York Mets, it is time to continue the rebuilding process in an effort to get better. In order to do so, I believe that the Mets must make these moves during the offseason.  Priority #1: Re-sign Jose Reyes - Coming off a season in which he had the best year of his career (.337 average, .384 on base %, .493 slugging) including the first batting title ever for the Mets, this task will prove difficult but the injury risk will likely scare some teams away from signing him to what has been deemed "Carl Crawford money". I personally believe that there are really only three teams that will truly be in the Reyes hunt. Those teams will be the Mets, Milwaukee, and to a lesser extent the Angels. I think an offer of 5 years 85 million (averages to about 17 per year) is the max contract that should be offered to him. Anything over that I am willing to part ways. http://globalnym.blogspot.com/2011/10/my-mets-2011-2012-offseason-wishlist.html

Building 2012 Rosters Prospects First - Picks 91-95

91 – 1B/3B Michael Fisher – Fisher was a good pickup in 2010. He plays a bunch of infield positions and has always hit well and fielded better. The problem here is there is so many other guys in this system that do the same thing and he’s totally blocked out going into a year he will play at 27-years old. I have him next year in Buffalo, playing first, second, or third. ETA: AAAA

92 – C Blake Forsythe – I was excited when the Mets drafted Blake. He had just come off a bad year in school, but I remembered the killer year he had had the prior year and my belief was the Mets had stolen one. So far, that hasn’t come true. Forsythe has lost his starting position to Albert Cordero and looks to be his backup again in 2012, this time in St. Lucie. Good pop, but disappointing overall hitting. ETA: AAAA

93 – C Fernando Pena – The Mets had an opportunity a few years ago to either offer $2mil to Jesus Montero, or $500K to Fernando Pena. The rest, as they say, is history. Pena has never lived up to his genetics and is now a backup catcher in the system. He will be the 2nd catcher in Binghamton in 2012, behind Juan Centeno, unless the Mets cut him. ETA: OOS 2015

94 – IF Eric Campbell – Campbell is a younger version of Michael Fisher. Plays a lot of positions, though he has had less hitting success than Fisher. He will join Michael in Buffalo next spring as the other utility infielder. ETA: AAAA

95 – SP Mark Cohoon – Cohoon is the poster child for A-level phenom that is moved far too fast.Cohoon owned the Sally League in 2010 and was bumped two levels to Binghamton. Big mistake. 2011 has been a miserable year for Mark in Buffalo (6.11), but he’ll get another chance next season to start. After that? ETA” AAAA
