The Keepers - #85 - P - Mike Hebert

85.                    Michael Hebert

Hebert was a 7th round draft pick in 2008 (he was the second pitcher chosen that year by the Mets), who has gotten off to a slow, unspectacular start; however, progress was made in 2009.

In 2008, Hebert signed with the Mets and went on to the GCL Mets, where he went 2-2, 4.71, in nine games, three starts. Control was not his forte, walking 29 batters in 21.0 innings.

Hebert came back to the GCL Mets in 2009, and finished up: 1-3, 3.38, in seven games, five starts. More importantly, he walked only 14 batters in 29.1-IP.

Forecast:  Let’s not forget that Hebert was drafted as an 18-year old, straight out of high school. But, let’s also not forget that, so far, this was a very bad choice for the second pitcher you’re going to draft.  I really hate 18-year old high school pitchers, especially ones that pitched to inferior competition. I’m old school. Give me the guy that pitched three years at Texas, or Clemson, or Rice any day.  That being said, Hebert may be doing baby steps, but they aren’t embarrassing. So far, in his major league career, he is 3-3. 3.68, 1.59, in 14 games, with 28 Ks in 39.1-IP. He’s also too young to buy a beer in the Piggy Wiggly down the block from my townhouse. Let’s give him two more years. Look for a well deserved promotion to a full season team in Savannah.

9-14-10: - 2011 Forecast: - Hebert is past all the growing pains and should wind up next season with a full season team. My guess right now is he will return to the team he finished the season with, the Savannah Sand Gnats.

7-10-11: - Hebert pitched a gem yesterday for the GCL Mets, going 6.0-IP, 0-R, 1-H, 6-K in their 1-0 nightcap win against the Cardinals. This is Hebert’s fourth year in the Mets organization and, frankly, he’s back with GCL where everything  started in 2008. Mike was a 7th rounder in 2008, staright out of high school. Assorted injuries and other matters have kept him bouncing around the lower levels and I had hoped to see him pitch Savannah this season. He’s still only 20-years old.

7-24-11: - https://mail.google.com/mail/?shva=1#inbox/1315e3490421b5fb  -    Making his first start as a Savannah Sand Gnat, RHP Michael Hebert was brilliant over six shutout innings to send the Gnats to a 4-2 victory over the Lexington Legends Sunday afternoon at Historic Grayson Stadium.  The Gnats (19-11/58-41) have won four games in a row. Hebert had made one relief appearance for Savannah in 2011 and two in 2010, but cruised in his first South Atlantic League start on Sunday.  He retired the first eight hitters he saw and then after C Roberto Pena’s single with two outs in the third, set down eight more batters in a row.  All told, he threw six innings with nine strikeouts, just two singles allowed, both to Pena, and no walks to earn his first win as a Sand Gnat.

9-23-11: - #88 – RP Mike Hebert – Hebert is a 2008 preppy that’s beginning to find his way after four years in the system. He’s finished this season with Savannah, where he will probably start next spring. He’s still young but Rule V is lurking. ETA – TBD

12-19-11: - http://www.amazinavenue.com/2011/12/19/2622862/2011-mets-minor-league-season-in-review-savannah-sand-gnats  - It seems each season Savannah moves a reliever into their rotation and watches him thrive and I'd say RHP Michael Hebert is your best bet to be that guy In 2012. The '08 seventh rounder has struggled with injuries as a pro but possesses a mid-90's fb and a solid mid-70's curve and in just ten games with the Gnats posted a .202 opponent's average with nearly a K/IP. The quality of Hebert's repertoire is equal to that of guys two levels ahead of him and if he can put things together and keep an eye on that command the 21-yr old could begin to make up for lost time fast.

Ray Knight, Mike Hebert, Josh Satin, Juan Lagarus, Brandon Moore

Ray Knight:

Knight originally came up with the Reds and spent 1974-1981 with the team. He did not get much playing time until 1979, when Pete Rose signed with the Phillies. He appeared in the 1980 All-Star Game, but got traded a year later to the Astros when Johnny Bench converted to third base. Knight played both first base and third base with the Astros and made the All-Star team again in 1982. He hit well in 1983, but not as well in 1984. As a result, the Astros decided to trade him to the Mets at the end of August 1984 for three prospects. - http://bleacherreport.com/articles/770405-new-york-mets-top-10-third-basemen-in-team-history#/articles/770405-new-york-mets-top-10-third-basemen-in-team-history/page/9

Josh Satin:

7-24-11: - http://buffalo.bisons.milb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20110724&content_id=22244656&vkey=news_t422&fext=.jsp&sid=t422  - Josh Satin's first Triple-A home run pushed the Bisons ahead in the eighth, but Lars Anderson responded with his own two-run homer, taking a 7-6 Pawtucket win Sunday afternoon at Coca-Cola Field. Satin had a chance for a walk-off, but center-fielder Che-Hsuan Lin made a running catch to end the game and strand two runners. "I hit it well, barely off the end of the bat," Satin said. "It's just a learning process for me. I wish I could've come through for the team, but it's definitely a step in the right direction. Satin hit 11 home runs in Double-A Binghamton, where he started the season.

Juan Lagarus:

7-25-11: - Lagarus made it known last night that his recent promotion to AA-ball should have happened earlier. Juan went 5-5, with two doubles, a triple, three runs scored and one run batted in, raising his AA-BA to .667. Remember, he’s still only 22-years old and could be someone we will be talking a lot about next season.

Brandon Moore:

7-25-11: - We haven’t talked much about Moore this season simply because he got off to a struggling start this season in AA. Last year he went 5-9, 3.56 for three levels and Binghamton would be the test all prospect pitchers have to master to someday be considered as a call-up. Last night, Moore tossed 6.0-IP, 0-R, 6-K, 0-BB, 2-H and lowered his season ERA to 3.73 in 19-starts. I expect Moore to finish the season with the B-Mets, but start 2012 with AAA-Buffalo. One note of caution: 5.35 ERA vs. lefties (2.69 vs. righties).

Mike Hebert, Jose Reyes, Phillip Evans, Jon Matlack, Albert Cordero

Mike Hebert:

Jose Reyes:

Still, there is a difference between having the ability to re-sign Jose Reyes at that price and deciding Reyes is worth that price. If however, the Wilpons don't even have the ability to afford Reyes beyond 2012 - and with a revenue generator like SportsNet New York, the largest media market in the world, and a loyal fan base the Wilpons should be able to give Sandy Alderson $150 million and full autonomy to make these decisions - they need to sell the franchise. Mets fan deserve at least that much. Though, being realistic, the Wilpons have made it overtly clear that they will not sell the team unless their hand is forced. So while the Mets should have the ability to re-sign their irreplaceable shortstop, Sandy Alderson needs to know if resigning Reyes is a viable option. - If it isn't, Reyes needs to go - http://bullpenbanter.com/

Phillip Evans:

7-8-11: - At the just completed 18u WWBA National Championship… SS Phillip Evans (2011 La Costa Canyon HS, Carlsbad, CA) earned tournament MVP honors after going 9-for-22 (.409/.458/.500) with 7 RBIs and 3 SBs .

Jon Matlack:

For Matlack, it represented a great moment in a Mets career that was otherwise far too short. Like Seaver, Matlack eventually fell out of favor with management after repeatedly -- and accurately -- criticizing the organization's unwillingness to acquire offense through free agency. So after six seasons, with a career 3.00 ERA and an 82-81 record, the winter before Matlack was due to jump in salary, he was dealt to the Rangers -- by GM Joe Torre no less -- in a four-team deal that netted the Mets back Willie Montanez and Tom Grieve. So basically next to nothing. The next year Matlack would go on to have the best season of his career, winning 15 games and posting a 2.27 ERA in 270 IP. Go Mets! - http://www.amazinavenue.com/2011/7/10/2268259/the-1975-asg-or-how-jon-matlack-won-the-mets-lone-asg-mvp

Albert Cordero:

7-10-11: - http://scoutingthesally.com/sally-stock-watch-cordero-may-ramirez-saladino  - Albert Cordero, C, New York Mets – In my STS’s Best piece on catchers, Cordero was listed as a catching prospect to watch along with San Francisco Giants backstop Hector Sanchez. And while Sanchez has hit the fast track all the way to triple-A, Cordero has essentially flopped in Savannah posting a .246/.284/.329 triple slash line. During the 2011 season, I’ve spoken to multiple scouts who simply don’t view him as a prospect. However, with a 5-5 night on July 8th including a pair of doubles and a triple, maybe Cordero can parlay a career night into a strong second half and regain a bit of the prospect status I once perceived him to have.
