Player Profile: Carlos Rincon

Background:

Carlos Rincon, OF/DH, Bats Right, Throws Right, 6'3"; 190 pounds; DOB 10/14/1997 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Signed by the Dodgers on July 2, 2015 as a non-drafted free agent for $350,000. Traded to the Mets in exchange for outfielder Billy McKinney on July 21, 2021. Rule 5 Draft eligible.

The Mets acquired Carlos Rincon to provide some right handed outfield power in their Minor League system and he did not disappoint.  In 38 games in Binghamton last year, he hit 10 homers, 29 RBIs slashing .269/.319/.537 - .856 OPS.  His overall 22 Home Runs with the Dodgers and Mets Minor league teams puts him 3rd among Mets Minor League Players (Mark Vientos 25, Francisco Alvarez 24) just ahead of Ronnie Mauricio (20).  His overall 77 RBIs outpaced all Mets Minor Leaguers last year besting Alvarez who had 70 and Mauricio and Jose Peroza who each had 64.  

Carlos has shown power pretty much since the Dodgers signed him and he hit 13 homers, 1.044 OPS, 52 games in the 2016 DSL.

Also, in June 2017 he "blasted 38 home runs — including 20 in the final round — to win the Midwest League Home Run Derby...[beating] Lansing Lugnuts third baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the final round."  Also competing in that derby - Fernando Tatis Jr.  

Mets.com has him as the #25 Prospect. "Rincon has already impressed Mets officials with his power potential from the right side...As is typical of power hitters, Rincon does have an aggressive streak at the plate, and high strikeout rates have typically kept him from showing an even average hit tool. Rincon is a typical, bat-first left fielder, albeit one with a strong enough arm to pick up assists from the grass."

#14 Prospect on Tom Brennan of Mack's Mets list. "big power, 22 HRs and 77 RBIs in 2021.  Potential to be a decent big league power bat."

In 2022, I project Carlos to start at Syracuse as part of a one of the most prospect driven AAA outfields the Mets have seen in a long time.  Syracuse Hitting coach, Joel Chimelis, did wonders for Khalil Lee last year.  I think Carlos will also benefit by working with him.  Some say that Carlos projects as a Right Handed hitter off the bench.  He has a great arm and can play defense.  With Khalil Lee and Nick Plummer both Left Handed Hitters and Jake Mangum a Switch Hitter, there may yet be a place for Carlos in Flushing on a regular basis in the very near future.

Player Profile: Nick Plummer

OF, Bats Left, Throws Left, DOB 7/31/1996; Drafted: 2015 June Amateur Draft - Round: 1, Pick: 23, Overall: 23, Team: St. Louis Cardinals. All three Minor League Options remain. Signed by the Mets in late November 2021 to a Major League contract and placed on the Mets 40 Man Roster.

Nick was the Cardinals first round pick in the 2015 draft.  Soon he was drafted he was injured.  

Baseball America: "Pain in his right wrist required his hamate bone to be removed, and a short time later he had the cartilage repaired in the same wrist...When the cast came off his right wrist and he saw his healthy, surgically rebuilt wrist for the first time in more than a month, Nick Plummer thought something didn’t look right. 'My arm—it was half the size,' he said. 'I was shocked.'...The size to which his forearm shrank as the muscles atrophied reminded the 2015 first-rounder how far he had to go to regain his strength, regain his swing and regain his place in the organization after missing the entire 2016 season."

In wasn't until 2021 in Double A Springfield that Nick started to show the skills that made him a #1 draft pick slashing .283/.404/.489 with 13 HRs, 46 RBIs in 90  games.  That got him promoted to AAA where he hit .267/.455//440 in 27 games with 2 HRs, 8 RBIS.

He showed a great ability to get on base and hit with power to the opposite field.

Still, the Cardinals decided to let him go as a 7 year minor league free agent and not add him to their 40 man roster.  That is where the Mets signed him to a Major League deal.  It sort of the same type of gamble they took last off season with Pitcher Sam McWilliams.  It gives them a depth option with 3 minor league options.  They will not have to place him on waivers to send him to Syracuse as long as he remains on the 40 man roster.

We will see in 2022 if this gamble pays off.

Player Profile: Jake Mangum



Here is a look at Mets Prospect, Jake Mangum.

Background: 

CF/RF, Bats Both, Throws Left, DOB 3/8/1996, 4th round, 2019 Draft.  According to FanGraphs, he will be Rule 5 Draft eligible in December 2022.

Back in March, I stated that "For 2021, it would just be good to see Jake back on the field...My prediction is that he starts out in High A Brooklyn with a promotion to Binghamton later in the year."  

What I didn't predict was Jake's whole new approach to hitting. During the down time in 2020, Jake worked on driving the ball more and being more selective at the plate.  It paid off.  Jake, who hit no home runs in his first pro-season and just 5 during his entire College Baseball career, hit 9 last year between Brooklyn and Binghamton.  

This year, I look for Jake to continue to progress, start the year in Binghamton with a mid-season call-up to Syracuse.  Maybe, if there is an injury in Flushing, Jake could get the 2022 call to the show.  

Tom recently had Jake as his #15 Prospect saying: "superb hitting in AA down the stretch, while adding some pop in 2021, giving me hope that he will carry that over to a decent big league career. Good speed, good D.  I could see him becoming a major league sub OF in 2022 at some point.  AAA bound."

SNY had Jake as their #17 Pick. and noted "Mangum...likely projects best as a fourth outfielder. He added more pop to his game this year, but the all-time SEC hits leader’s offensive game is based upon contact and speed. He is a fantastic glove in center field and is capable to play the other outfield spots. He brings the grinder mentality that really fits on a major league bench....MLB ETA: 2022"

Prospects 1500 has Jake as the #27 Prospect.

Sam Dykstra MiLB.com: Meet the Mets' 2021 Organizational All-Stars - OF - "Jake Mangum...His .294 average ranked sixth in the Double-A Northeast, and he was one of only three league qualifiers to bat at least .290 while sporting a strikeout rate below 20 percent (17.6, in this case). The 25-year-old’s speed also made him a solid option in center, and that package of tools and performance helped earn him a spot on the Double-A Northeast postseason All-Star list."



Here is what Mack said the day Jake was drafted: “If I ran a Major League team’s front office, I’d draft Jake Mangum early and pay him what it takes to sign him. I love the way Mangum plays. I love the way he competes. I love the way he wins.”

Jake is a future Mets leader.  Per Baseball America: after his team was eliminated in the College World Series, Jake “made an impassioned plea for more scholarships and to pass legislation approving a third full-time assistant coach for baseball.” 

“Mangum is one of the biggest stars in college baseball—he’s an All-American and finished his career No. 4 on the Division I all-time hits list. But he later said that he spent the last two years as a walk-on, as Mississippi State tried best to juggle its allotment of 11.7 scholarships.” 

Proof that Jake will do what it takes to help his team win.

How did he do in Brooklyn in 2019? 

In 53 games, 182 at-bats, 29 runs, 5 doubles, 3 triples, 18 RBIs, .247 BA/ .337 OBP/ .297 SLG.  He also led a team that stole a lot of bases with 17 stolen bases. 

However, the biggest thing about Jake in 2019 was how he came through in the clutch.  In 33 at bats with 2 outs and a runner in scoring position, Jake excelled hitting .364.  It seemed like he got the big hit for the Cyclones last year time and time again as they won the NY Penn League Championship.

Per Joe DeMayo SNY.TV: “Mangum is a pure hitter, as evidenced by being the all-time SEC hits leader and a true old-school, gritty type of player. He has a perspective that if his jersey isn't dirty then he didn't have the day he wants. He is the type of player who goes 100 percent at all times. Truly that is the type of player the fans will love to root for…

Defensively, Mangum has above-average range and instincts and an above-average arm in center field. I have very little doubt that he will be able to handle center field at the big-league level.”

Amazing Avenue recently said this about Jake: “He is aggressive at the plate, but like the stolen bases, has improved on working deeper counts and drawing walks. In the outfield, Mangum is an average-to-above-average defender in center. He possesses plenty of range in thanks to his excellent speed, and his routes have refined since his earlier college days. In addition, he possesses a strong arm as well, even pitching a few innings for Mississippi State in 2017."

Player Profile: Khalil Lee

Khalil Lee, RF/CF/LF, Bats Left, Throws Left, DOB 6/26/1998, 5'10", 170 pounds, Drafted by the Kansas City Royals, 3rd round, 2016 Draft, 103 Overall.  He is on the Mets 40 Man Roster.

The Mets acquired Khalil on February 10, 2021 as part of a three team trade that sent Andrew Benintendi to the Royals.  The Mets gave up Josh Winkowski (who was acquired as part of the Steven Matz to Toronto trade) along with minor league prospect Freddy Valdez.  

At the time of the trade last winter, I was a little skeptical.  He had great speed, great arm, and power but he struck out more than he hit.

During the season, I spoke to Syracuse Hitting Coach, Joel Chimelis, about Khalil who said: "I think Lee has come a long way mechanically.  I think he needs a better understanding of how the body works and how to be more efficient with the body and the barrel. He’s still young.  He just turned 23. He still has a lot to learn.  I think he’s learning it and picking it up faily quickly. 

He has pretty good strike zone discipline but sometimes his effort level is a bit too much.  But he’s learning and he’s getting better.  One of the things with him is having a high ground ball rate which means he’s spinning off the ball so we try to maintain the connection…focus on the inside part of the baseball…also stay long through the zone and hit more line drives."

Overall in 2021, he still struggled with the strikeouts, getting K'd 128 times against 81 hits but you could see progress all year and in September he hit .311/.440/.635 - 1.075 OPS with 6 HRs and 13 RBIs.  That helped Khalil be named as a 2021 Triple-A East League All Star.  

Tom Brennan had Khalil as his #7 prospect saying: "Khalil Lee - walks a lot, gets hit by pitches a real lot (24 times in 388 PAs), and his hitting in 2021 was much improved.  Was only retired in 55% of his AAA plate appearances, which explains why he had an OBP of .450.  Opposing pitchers had to HATE him. 

The best-ever OBP while in the Mets AAA minors for on base machine Brandon Nimmo was .423, nearly 30 points lower, and that was accomplished in the PCL hitters’ wonderland, not in the normal hitter environment Syracuse where Lee played.  

Lee ought to be a frequently used Mets outfielder in 2021, either as a starter or reserve.  His AAA .450 ought to translate to a 2022 Mets' .300 OBP at a minimum, I would speculate."

Prospects 1500.com has Khalil as the #12 Prospect.

Is he ready to be an MLB regular?  Very possibly.  If not, he is very close.
