Draft 13 – Rowdy Tellez, Garrett Williams, D.J. Peterson, Travis Demeritte, Ryan McMahon

Rowdy Tellez, OF/1B, Elk Grove HS (CA) - The 6’-4”, 225-pound left-hander has put up gaudy numbers all season. Over his last 14 games, however, he has taken it to another level. He has gone 23-for-39 (.590) over that span with 10 doubles, five home runs, 26 RBI and has drawn 13 walks to zero strikeouts for a .709 OBP/1.231 SLG. A lot like Chicago Cubs prospect Daniel Vogelbach, Tellez has enormous power from the left side but also has a great approach at the plate and rarely gets cheated. There has been talk about him possibly being selected in the first round of the 2013 MLB draft, but he shouldn’t last past the second. LINK

Garrett Williams, Calvary Baptist Academy (Shreveport, La.) - A top left-handed pitching prospect, Williams could also land with a team as a first baseman. He batted .489 with 36 RBI, five doubles, four triples and six home runs this year. It wouldn't be a surprise, however, if Williams stays on the mound. He posted 1.46 ERA with 81 strikeouts in 48 innings this year. LINK

As an offensive player, D.J. Peterson is arguably the top corner infielder in this year's draft class. Mayo noted in his scouting report that some scouts have seen him as the best pure hitter not just among collegiate prospects, but all prospects. A right-handed swinger, Peterson pretty much has it all: strength, bat speed, smarts, you name it. Faleris applauds him for always coming to the plate with a game plan, and for his ability to adjust from at-bat to at-bat.  LINK

Travis Demeritte, 3B, Winder-Barrow HS (GA) - The state of Georgia has some insane talent his season and Demeritte is among the best. The 6’-1” right-hander is a plus defender at the hot corner with his strong arm, range and instincts. He also has excellent bat speed and some serious raw power. Over 24 games this season, he hit .404 with seven doubles, 12 home runs, 37 RBI and drew 33 walks to 11 strikeouts for a .563 OBP/.910 SLG. A high-character kid who is a good bet to be selected on day one of the 2013 MLB draft. LINK

Ryan McMahon, Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) - At one time considered the second best player on the Monarch team behind All-American catcher Jeremy Martinez, McMahon has elevated his status with a strong high school season. He was the defensive MVP of the National High School Invitational and then earned MVP honors at the Boras Classic with a strong offensive performance. He batted .420 with 32 RBI, nine doubles and four home runs on the season.  LINK

Draft 13 – Dane McFarland, Corey Simpson, Ryan McMahon, Daniel Ayes, Rowdy Tellez

Dane McFarland, OF, JSerra HS (CA) - The season didn’t turn out as expected for the 6’-4” right-hander, He broke his hand in a winter game, missed almost half of the season and saw his team go 10-13. He hit .281 over 12 games with a .425 OBP and stole five bases but didn’t record an extra-base hit as his power was limited recovering from the injury. When healthy, he is a quick-twitch athlete with excellent bat speed and raw power. He also is an above-average runner, timed at 6.5 in the 60. Without scouts getting a good look at him this year, he could slip in the 2013 MLB draft and be a great value pick in the third round. If he is still there when the Cubs pick at 77, he could be a nice pick up. Committed to Oregon. link

Corey Simpson, C, Sweeny HS (TX) - Over his last six games, the 6’-3”, 220-pound right-hander has gone a ridiculous 15-for-18 (.833) with two doubles, a triple, three home runs, 14 RBI and has drawn three walks for a .857 OBP/1.556 SLG. On the season, he is now hitting .578 with 11 doubles, 10 home runs, 39 RBI and has drawn 16 walks to just five strikeouts over 24 games for a .659 OBP/1.183 SLG. A very good defensive catcher, there is obviously a ton of offensive upside, as well, with his size, power and approach at the plate. He may, however, outgrow the position. Like most of the players on this list, Ryan McMahon enters the draft having split time between football and baseball in high school with designs on continuing just in baseball if he goes to college or in the pros.  McMahon is committed to USC for baseball, but considering that he has decided to focus on it exclusively, you can sense that he is hoping that he hears his name called soon enough to make things worth it for him, financially speaking, to forego the bright lights of Southern California. link
