2013 Draft-Notes – Drew Dosch, JaCoby Jones, Stephen Gonsalves, Justin Williams

Left-handed batter Drew Dosch (Youngstown State) of the Falmouth Commodores made some key hits that earned him a current batting average of .368 and Coca Cola’s Player of the Week. In last Wednesday’s game against Cotuit, Dosch hit a two-out double in the seventh inning that helped earn the Commodores a 9-2 victory over the Kettleers. Following his performance Wednesday, Dosch helped fuel another Falmouth victory after belting another double last Thursday against Wareham. Dosch shined in Saturday’s game against the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox when he hit an RBI double in the first inning and later drove a solo homer in the third inning. - http://ht.ly/1l671Q

Baseball America 2012 All-Americans – 1st team: -

OF - Clint Frazier, Loganville (Loganville, Ga.), Junior  All-Region Hitter of the Year... Team Georgia.  Stats - .424 batting average, 55 runs, 7 doubles, 24 home runs, 58 RBI.

JaCoby Jones, INF/OF, Harwich (LSU) - Jones hit the ball very hard in batting practice and sent a few into the trees at Y-D. The athleticism is apparent in his actions... he played CF (between Phil Ervin and Austin Wilson) on Wednesday and made two impressive plays. The first was a great read and jump coming in on a ball he barely got to. The second required him to range far into LF. Definitely some inconsistency here (for example, his swing got realy handsy at times in bp) and I’m not exactly sure where he profiles best - need a few more looks - but its easy to see the appeal. Plenty of bat speed and he flashed all five tools. http://www.bullpenbanter.com/rtmenu/821-cape-cod-league-observations-week-3

When a new 18U pitcher entered in the second inning, some didn't recognize him at first. With a throwback type delivery where his hands separate early, reach back and regroup at his balance point, lefthander Stephen Gonsalves (Cathedral Catholic High, San Diego) raised some eyebrows. Working with Team USA pitching coach Jim Lawler, Gonsalves altered his windup to get more momentum toward the plate. It's very new to him as he only tried it on flat ground the day before the game, but Gonsalves breezed through his one inning of work, striking out two. http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/draft/2012/07/several-players-highlight-final-game-of-prospect-classic/

Justin Williams, a LSU baseball commit, has displayed his talents in recent months by playing in several summer showcases with his travel club in Baton Rouge-based Marucci Elite. He will play in several national tournaments, including the 2012 Perfect Game All-American Classic at PETCO Park in San Diego on Aug. 12. He is also preparing to participate in the Under Armour All-America Game at legendary Wrigley Field in Chicago at 12:30 p.m. Aug. 18. The prestigious game will feature 36 of the best prep baseball players in the nation, and it will be televised nationally by MLB Network.

2013 Draft/D1 Notes – Chris Okey, CWS, Stephen Gonsalves, Jonathan Crawford

Todd Gold‏ -

LHP Robert Kaminsky (Englewood Cliffs, NJ) with a breakout performance @ PGNational Showcase. Touched 94 with good command, 79 mph hammer

Chris Okey (2013, Eustis HS, Mt. Dora, FL) is no stranger to Perfect Game events. His first event was the 2010 18u PG WWBA Memorial Day Classic and his twelfth is the 2012 Perfect Game National Showcase currently being held at the Metrodome. He came into the showcase ranked 21st nationally and showed why on his first day. Okey looked good during Thursday’s workouts. He recorded a pop time of 1.85 and threw 84 mph from behind the plate. He added pop times of 1.90 and 1.94 during Thursday’s game action. As good as his defensive skills are, Okey also stands out at the plate. After putting on an impressive show in batting practice, he laced a single up the middle on a 92 mph fastball in his first at bat in game action.

RHP Tregg Scherer, 2012 from Charlestown HS, has committed to Cleveland State Community College in Cleveland, TN.

Olentangy Liberty LHP Kris Popham commits to Wright State

KS – RF  T.J.Sutton – 2012:  .305, 3-HR, 30-RBI – grounded out in the 5th

KS – 2B  Derek Toadvine – 2012: .255, 15-RBI, 8-SB – Ohio born… considered by coaches to be the best athlete on the team… will move to SS next season… good looking kid… protected the plate well in the 3rd… 9-pitch line-drive out could come back and help the team when Baxendale’s pitch count goes up… lined out to second in the 6th

AR – 1B  Dominic Ficociello – 2012:  .301, 6-HR, 40-RBI, 33-BB – switch hitter… good line-drive spray hitter… 41-K’s in the season… came into game only hitting .222 in playoffs… walked in the 1st… grounded out in the 3rd… flied out to center in the sixth.. groundout in the 8th continues his playoff slump.

AR – C  Jake Wise – 2012:  .248, 1-HR, 22-RBI, 38-K – tough to run against…big homer in the second… walked and scored the Razorback’s third run… grounded out in the sixth… Wise drove in two more in the 8th… not a bad game for someone who starts because of his defense.

Overall:  Wise stood out and Toadvine looked interesting.

South Carolina – Florida

The only player eligible for the 2013 draft was Florida  DH Erik Payne. We decided to pass on tracking this game.

Last summer was "Show Time" for San Marcos, Calif., top prospect Stephen Gonsalves. This summer promises to offer more of the same, and Gonsalves got it started by attending one of amateur baseball's biggest shows this week. Gonsalves is your prototypical "rangy" left-hander and outfielder who will be a senior at Cathedral Catholic High School in San Diego in the fall. The 6-foot-5, 190-pounder with a fastball that typically sits in the 90-92 mph range, is at the Perfect Game National Showcase being held inside the Metrodome, and is hoping to make an impression on the more than 300 scouts who have been in attendance the first two days.

Jonathan Crawford could get his slider working and lay waste to the Wolfpack, but he also has a better chance of blowing up and allowing four or five runs than Johnson, a tested veteran, and probably about the same chance of doing that as the inconsistent Whitson. It's strange to say that about a guy who's yet to allow a hit as a starter in the NCAA Tournament, but Crawford's been erratic at times; Johnson is very much not erratic, and Whitson proved himself as a starter in last year's postseason. Crawford's no-hitter is obviously a phenomenal accomplishment, but it's also one game, a small sample size that has very little predictive value.

D1 Notes 6-10-12 – Stephen Gonsalves, SB-LSU, ARIZ-ST.J, Adrian Castano, Michael Lorenzen

Class: HS Senior -  Hometown: San Marcos, California  Height/Weight: 6-5/190   Gonsalves drew some attention from ESPN during the final month of the high school season for his outstanding performance in the CIF San Diego Section Division III championship game, where he tossed a complete-game, struck out eight and picked up the victory. For the season, the lanky lefty went 10-0 with 79 strikeouts in 66 innings

Baton Rouge Super Regional, Game 2 – Stony Brook 3, #7 LSU 1 – SP Kevin Gausman 7.0-IP, 3R, 6H, 1-BB, 6-K… S3-H, 1-ERP Tyler Johnson 9.0-IP, CG, 1-K, 4-BB… 1B Kevin Courtney 3-3, 2-R, 1-RBI - You have to give SB lots of credit, first dropping game one this morning and then having to play in the rain against the nation’s top pitcher, at the LSU home stadium. Clutch win sets up the rubber game tomorrow.

Tucson Super Regional, Game 2 – Arizona 7, St. John’s 4 – SP Konnor Wade 9.0-IP, CG, 6-H, 2-ER, 2-K… SP Sean Hagan 6.0-IP, 6-H, 4-ER, 2-K, 7-BB… 3B Seth Mejias-Brean 3-5, 1-RBI, 2-R

Adrian Castano

Adrian is much more well known than Connor throughout the city. Adrian is 6'2 and weighs 170. Like Connor he Pitches and plays Center and also first. Adrian is a lefty though. Firstly Adrian is very fast. Gets very good jumps when stealing and is a very smart baserunner. This year Adrian didn't have his usual power. He was single happy hitter but he extends those singles from stealing 2nd and 3rd. In past years he had much more extra base power. Doesn't strike out much but doesn't walk as much as Connor doesn't have the same pitch recognition as Connor. The thing that has made Adrian well known though is his pitching. I haven't heard much about where he's at know but I know when he was a Freshman, he's a junior now and will be a senior next year, he was hitting the mid 80's easily throughout the whole game. Like Connor he throws a fastball, curve and changeup. He doesn't use his change much but from what i heard his fastball has gotten much better which had also helped the curve. Unlike Connor, Adrian is a control freak. In 15 innings this year he has walked 1 and struck out 29. Much like Connor the coach didn't want to work Adrian too much this year. He's a power lefty who knows how to play baseball. Adrian loves baseball and will probably have a much higher chance to go to college to get better unless the right team picks him.

Michael Lorenzen

Class: College Junior   Hometown: Anaheim, California   Height/Weight: 6-3/195   Born: January 4, 1992   Another multiple-occasion draftee, Michael Lorenzen will no doubt go higher than his previous drafting back in 2010, when the Rays selected him out of Fullerton High School in the seventh-round. Lorenzen didn’t do much negotiating and decided to stay close to home, signing with Cal State-Fullerton. Lorenzen wowed just about everyone with his freshman campaign. He led the squad with a .342 average, and produced an impressive .373 in conference play. He combined for 13 extra-base hits, struck out just 24 times (a fantastic number for a first-year player) and swiped 19 bases. In the field, Lorenzen drew rave reviews for his range and throwing ability. He gunned down five baserunners attempting to advance in just 49 games and committed just two errors all year.
