Q&A, Human David, Gentle Ben & Jose, Cristian Guzman... and All Irish Met Team

Q&A:

Joe D: Has anybody taken a leadership role in the clubhouse in the absence of Beltran and the departure of Delgado? What can you tell us about Bay?

Brian Costa: I think Wright has steadily become more of a leader. He’s not a guy who’s going to stand up and shout or anything, but you can see him going over to the mound when a pitcher is struggling in a game and talking to guys on a one-on-one basis in the clubhouse. Bay is a great guy, but I wouldn’t expect him to be a loud voice in the clubhouse, partly because it’s not his nature, partly because he’s the new guy. - link

Human David:

We all remember when Wright took that terrible fastball to the helmet from the Giants' Matt Cain on Aug. 15. It was the most frightening moment of the Mets' season. To Wright's credit, he was soon back in action. It was important to get back in the box as quickly as possible. The day he was beaned, he was batting .324. When he came back Sept. 1, he hit .239 the rest of the way. Major League players can be a cruel bunch and you know Wright will be tested just as he was tested on Monday by the Cardinals. Wright will be knocked down. Then they will throw curveballs that start shoulder high, just to see if he flinches. - read more

Gentle Ben & Jose:

After being diagnosed with hyperthyroidism 25 years ago, Ben Crenshaw remembers, he needed around six months until he finally began feeling good on the golf course.

Crenshaw, who has captured 19 PGA Tour titles and earned two Masters green jackets, has a sense of what Mets shortstop Jose Reyes is dealing with. In 1984, Crenshaw was battling the illness — he actually had Graves’ disease — and in a phone interview with The Post, he said it dramatically affected both the way he felt and the way he played.
Crenshaw took medication, and in general he’s healthy now. But he still has to monitor his thyroid. He has his blood tested every five or six months to make sure the hyperthyroidism is gone, and he still sees an endocrinologist. He also says he must take synthetic thyroid supplements for the rest of his life - link

Cristian Guzman:

According to Rich Coutinho of ESPN 1050 in New York, the Mets have discussed Cristian Guzman as a potential replacement for Jose Reyes. If the Mets are looking to waste $8 million in a jiffy, than yes, it's a tremendous idea. Coutinho writes that the Mets "may be looking for another (shortstop) since Reyes could be out a few weeks," but acquiring Guzman hardly seems worth it. Until Reyes returns, the Mets will likely press ahead with Alex Cora or prospect Ruben Tejada.
