5 4 4-5: - Sean Green, Division Prediction, Bay vs. Lackey, African-Americans... and Top 100 Baseball Prospects

Sean Green:

4-4 from: - mets today  - Made the team – Do I really need to comment here? Besides taking a spot from the aforementioned Figueroa, Green has options remaining and could have been sent to AAA without being waived. His new underhand angle clearly remains a work in progress, so why not let him continue to develop it in Buffalo? Finally, why in the world would the Mets keep a ROOGY / matchup guy over a long reliever when they have four starting pitchers unlikely to pitch past the fifth inning in April (or beyond April)?

Division Prediction:

I'll take the long odds that the Braves' breaks fall the right way and Cox goes out with a winner in a tight race over the Phillies. The Marlins will hit a ton but waste the brilliance of Josh Johnson and Ricky Nolasco by using 11 different fifth starters and half a dozen closers. The Mets will have their nightmare collapse and be wondering if they can unload not only Castillo, but maybe Beltran and Reyes, too. They will finish a few games ahead of the Nationals - but only a few. - keith

Bay vs. Lackey:

Jason Bay (Mets) vs. John Lackey (Red Sox) — Bay preferred to stay with the Red Sox. But Boston was concerned about the long-term condition of his knees, and instead gambled on the long-term health of Lackey’s arm. The Mets probably should have gone after Lackey to aid an underwhelming rotation and instead signed Bay. - nypost

African-Americans:

“I think players understand there's a problem and yes, deep down it may be how they're thinking. The game has changed how guys get into the game...for lower income families. With all the travel squads and feeder systems into the draft, it's what scouts are in tune with. There's really only 10 teams that will go ahead and draft high school players and develop them and those are the teams that have higher percentage of minority players. The solution is we either have to figure out a way where scholarships for baseball have to be equal to the other sports in order draw the minority player or all the other Major League teams that have the philosophy of drafting college players need to change or adapt and look at and take chances with high school players. Baseball doesn't give full scholarships like other sports in college...it's difficult especially when it comes to the finances.” - harold-reynolds

Top 100 Baseball Prospects:

From http://www.prospectjunkies.com/:

63. Fernando Martinez - OF - NYM. I once thought he was overrated, now I'm thinking he's underrated.

66. Ike Davis - 1B - NYM. Should be starting in New York by year end.

77. Jenrry Mejia – RHP – NYM. Will we get a look at him in an 8th inning role this year?

85. Wilmer Flores - SS - NYM. He won't end up at SS, but the bat has some serious pop.
