Game #9• Friday, April 16, 2010
MerchantsAuto.com Stadium • Manchester, NH • 6:35 p.m.
LAST GAME: In their first game away from NYSEG Stadium, the
B-Mets scored in bulk early and held on late to defeat New
Hampshire 7-6 Thursday night at MerchantsAuto.com Stadium.
Zach Lutz pitted Binghamton an early 1-0 lead with an
RBI single in the first, driving home Nick Evans who doubled
off Fisher Cats starter Zach Stewart. New Hampshire scored
the next three runs off B-Mets starter Scott Shaw, including a
solo homer for Brian Jeroloman in the second inning. Down 3-
1, Evans put the B-Mets back on top with a majestic three-run
blast down the line in left, his third homer of the year. Binghamton
added to the lead with another three runs in the fifth
courtesy of a solo homer from Lutz off the batter’s eye in
center and RBI doubles from Mike Nickeas and Kirk Nieuwenhuis.
Shaw settled in after allowing the early runs and retired
the last eight he faced before departing after five innings. He
allowed three earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts over
five inning to notch his first Double-A win. Roy Merritt tossed a
season-best 2.2 innings of relief and John Lujan nailed down
the save with a 1-2-3 ninth.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: LHP Mike Antonini is scheduled
to make his second start of the season tonight. He was
roughed up for five runs on nine hits over 3.2 innings last
Sunday versus Akron in a losing effort. The southpaw went 7-5
with a 5.32 ERA over 25 appearances, 20 starts, spanning
115 innings last year with Binghamton. He was the Mets 18th
round choice in the June 2007 draft out of Georgia College &
State University.
RHP Marty McLeary will take the ball for the Fisher Cats.
McLeary went three innings and allowed two runs on five hits
April 11 at New Britain his last time. He made 14 starts between
New Hampshire and Las Vegas (AAA) last season with a
7-4 mark and a 3.16 ERA in 79.2 innings combined. The 35-
year-old veteran made it to the Big Leagues for three games
with San Diego (NL) in 2004.
LEAGUE-LEADING EVANS: Binghamton first baseman Nick
Evans is off to a torrid start in 2010. He is tied for the Eastern
League lead in homers (3), RBI (10) and runs scored (9). Evans
is hitting .364 (12-33) over eight games thus far.
OPPRESSIVE OFFENSE: A year ago, the B-Mets led the EL in
batting average with a .268 clip, but finished dead last in runs
scored, 550, which averages to 3.9 runs per game. This season
Binghamton is back at the top of the league in hitting with
a team average of .294 through eight games, but leads the
league in runs per game (6.1). The team is tops in the league
in homers (10), RBI (46), doubles (21) and walks (41), which
makes up for the team ERA (4.74), 11th in the EL.
