The Mack Report – December 6, 2010
The Jayson Werth signing really whacked me out last night. I went to Cott's (contracts) and the first thing that surprised me was the fact that the Nats whole payroll last year was less than $70mil. And, that's with Strasburg and Harper.
I used to go every year to the National Association of Broadcasters' convention and the first thing to be announced every year was some mega deal made for a radio station, purchased by Infinity Broadcasting. We'd all shake our heads, trying to make the math work, but it never did.
Let's try and figure this out... $126mil over seven years, averages to $18mil a year.
If they signed Adam Dunn instead,it would have been around $12mil a year, so you could say this only is costing them an additional $6mil a year.
And, since the entire payroll last year was just under $66mil, that means the Nats are only increasing their team salary by ten per cent.
Ten per cent of the Yankees 2010 salaries are around $21mil. The Mets $14mil. The Phillies $13mil.
Do these teams pay one player ten per cent of their payroll?
Well, the Yankees do to A-Rod and C.C.... the Mets do to Johan, Bay, Wright, and Beltran... and Philly does with Howard, Halladay, Oswalt, and Utley.
So, this makes sense, right,
The ironic part of this is I'm writing this while Chairman Bernanke was on 60 Minutes explaining why the country is in shit.
$18mil a year for a right fielder.
Continuing our prospect slotting…
112. RP John Lujan – 27-yrs. old – Lujan is your basic AAAA relief pitcher. He went 2-4, 4.50 in 51-appearacnes with Buffalo and Binghamton last season. He also had seven saves last year, so we’re going to assume that the Mets resigned him last month so he can be the Buffalo closer in 2011. Look, 71-Ks in 62.0-IP is okay in my books (only 25-BB.
2011: Buffalo pen
2012: same
113. RP Hamilton Bennett – 23-yrs. old – Bennett is a college boy lefty drafted in 2010. He played the season in Brooklyn and is off to a good start: 2-2, 3.49, 19-G, 24-K, 9-BB, 28.1-IP. Far too early to tell what the Mets have here and he’ll move on to Savannah to show us more.
2011: Savannah pen
2012: St. Lucie
114. RP Adam Kolarek – 22-yrs. old – one of my 2011 dark horses… 6-3 lefty… 2-1, 3.13, 22-G split between Kingsport and Brooklyn… 6-3 lefty… 17-BB, 45-K, in only 37.1-IP… did I tell you he’s a 6-3 lefty? Watch for him to shine in Savannah.
2011: Savannah pen
2012: Binghamton
115. 1B Travis Ozga – 24-yrs. old – The Mets don’t have any prospect first basemen below Ike Davis; however, they do have one two many decent minor leaguers than needed. Ozga played Savannah last year, filling in for Sam Honeck who went down for the season early on. Ozga did okayl (.265/.321/.385/.684) but where does he go? Jeff Flagg and Honeck will be back and Stefan Welsh and Michael Fisher are ahead of him. I’m got him as backup in St. Lucie until things weed out at ST.
2011: St. Lucie
2012: Out of organization if OPS remains .684
116. RP Adam O’Neill – 21-yrs. old – O’Neill was signed out of Australia in 2009. Pitched 11 games for both the 2009 team (6.38) and 2010 (3.52)… but improved on 2009’s 18.1-IP/14-BB/11-K to 15.1-IP/7-BB, 12-K. No rush… send him to K-Port.
2011: Kingsport
2012: Binghamton
