MLB - Mets:
Terry Collins
is 63. A man does not
surrender at 63, at least not a man such as Collins. But he does perhaps begin
to recognize there are forces bigger than himself, and that sometimes he must run
with the wind rather than against it, if only to turn and fight another day. See
– and this notion didn't come easy for Collins – the game is almost always
greater than the man. It sucks and it's not fair. And when a man fights every
day, every day, then that becomes the job – to fight. Sometimes the fight is
just and sometimes it is blind, and because Collins didn't discriminate, the
fight showed up every day, more game than even he was. http://sports.yahoo.com/news/terry-collins-and-mets-melded--and-the-unexpected-result-is-a-winning-team.html
Mark
Simon - Mets are 43-26 this season when Ike Davis starts...they
are 2-13 when he doesn't.
OF Fernando Martinez – AAA-Okla City - .322/.376/ .517/.
893, 9-HR, 46-RBI
AAA – Buffalo:
LHP Garrett Olson is the third consecutive Bisons pitcher
to make their league-high 18th start of the season (Matt
Harvey, Jeurys Familia). Olson is coming off
a loss on Monday against Durham as the southpaw allowed three runs in five
innings of work. The veteran has allowed three runs or less in three straight
starts and five of his last seven outings since June 2.
Josh Satin had a hit and three more walks last
night. In 16 games since June 21, Satin is hitting .379 (22-58) with three
doubles, a triple, four home runs and 11RBI. During that same stretch, the
infielder in second among all International League hitters with 14 runs scored
and a .507 on-base percentage. For the season, Satin sports a team-best .384
on-base percentage.
Tonight –
LHP Josh Edgin's scoreless streak ends. First run allowed
in 8.1IP
AA-Binghamton:
RHP Cory Mazzoni (1-2, 6.35) makes his fourth start as a
B-Met looking to snap a two-game losing skid. The righty from Evans City, PA
allowed six runs on nine hits over four innings in a loss to the Altoona Curve
in his most recent start on July 1. After throwing a complete-game against the
Akron Aeros in his Double-A debut on June 20, Mazzoni lost a pair of starts at
NYSEG Stadium, allowing an opponents’ batting average of .413. Selected in the
2nd round of the 2011 draft out of North Carolina State, Mazzoni started his season
with the St. Lucie Mets (High-A), going 5-1 with a 3.25 ERA in 12 starts in the
Florida State League.
RHP Kyle McPherson (1-2, 4.76) makes his fourth start
of the season for the Curve and his second against the Binghamton Mets. He has
not pitched since losing to the Harrisburg Senators on June 27. He allowed four
runs (three earned) on six hits over six innings. The righty sat out the first
two months with shoulder inflammation. McPherson split his season last year
between Bradenton (High-A) and Altoona, combining for a 12-6 record and
compiling a 2.96 ERA en route to earning the Pittsburgh Pirates 2011 Minor
League Pitcher of the Year award. McPherson was selected in the 14th round of
the 2007 draft out of the University of Mobile.
Tonight –
Just a good ole 8-2 win…
2B Reese Havens (.217) didn’t participate in the route
(0-4), but that’s okay… he’s coming around.
The lower half of the
lineup (Francisco Pena, Sean Kazmar, Dustin Martin)
had fun here, going a collective 5-11, 5-R, 2-doubles, 1-HR, 5-RBIs. Their
added up BA is .724.
Stefan Welsh hitting .358 for Altoona.
SP Cory Mazzoni had one of his good outings: 7.0-IP, 0-R,
3-H, 6-K, 2-BB (4.50).
A+ - St. Lucie: -
Today -
Cory Vaughn hit his 15th Home Run. I think I need to reprint the original
post I put up when Cory was picked by the Mets. I now love the pop, but hate
both the BA and the Ks.
3B Zack Lutz (.250) hit his
first rehab homer.
A – Savannah: -
I’ve already put up two
posts on the Savannah doubleheader and will write extensively about them later
today.
A-Low – Brooklyn:
Lost 3-6
A scout at the Savannah
game told me that “he’s not so sure about Phillip Evans
at short”. I have him projected as a second baseman some time up the
line.
It’s nice to see J.C. Gamboa leading off… 2-5, .265. He really needs to
start moving…
SP Luis Mateo may have given up four runs, but it’s the
8-K in 6.0-IP that stands out. (the same scout I mentioned above says that
Mateo is “the real deal”). So far this season: 23.2-IP, 30-K, 2-BB.
Rookie – Kingsport:
This team , right now,
is a mess. Great organization, super manager/coaching, but in dire need of a
pitcher. I’ll let you look this one up on your own.
DSL Mets:
2B Jean Rodriguez - 3-5, 1-double (.279).
C (prospect) Miquel Leaf – 1-1, .310
RF Hengelbert Rojas (imagine how much fun the NYC
newspapers would have with this name) – 1-1, .330
P Gaby Almonte – 4.0-IP, 0-ER, 1.54
2B (prospect) Pedro Rondon - .209
LF (prospect) Vincente Lupo - 1-3, .365
