Daily Mets Minors Report – 7-10-12

Date: 7-10-12

MLB:

Orioles have signed 2nd-rder Branden Kline for $793,700

MLB - Mets:

AAA – Buffalo:

Tonight

AA-Binghamton:

Mike Newman‏ - Love seeing Mets Wilfredo Tovar discussed on MLB Trade Rumors. Nice little player...

LHP Darin Gorski (5-4, 4.06) makes his 15th start of the season and third against the Curve. The lefty took the no-decision in his last start on July 3 versus Altoona. He allowed two runs on three hits over six innings in a game the B-Mets would win 3-2 in comeback fashion. In two starts against the Curve he has gone 0-1 with a 6.55 ERA. Over 11.0 innings he has struck out 11, walked three and allowed a batting average of .333. Selected in the seventh round of the 2009 draft, Gorski is in his first season with the B-Mets.

RHP Phil Irwin (1-6, 4.18) makes his 11th start of the season and first against the B-Mets. He lost his last start against the Reading Phillies on July 4. He allowed just one run over seven innings, but got no offensive support in a 1-0 loss. Irwin struck out seven and walked one. Irwin did not begin his season until early May with Bradenton (High-A). He made one start before joining the Curve on May 11. Selected in the 21st round of the 2009 draft by the Pirates out of the University of Mississippi, Irwin is in his second year with the Curve.

Detroit Tiger prospect catcher Rob Brantly (Mets passed on him) said about Zack Wheeler - “I thought that 98 was coming out so effortless. The mound presence, plus his stuff, he looks like a mature big league pitcher. It was the easiest 98 I’ve ever caught in my life, all down in the zone. I’d want him on my team.’’ - http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/more_sports/zack_to_the_futures_r4uHdLLXIumNxv43mtoL0J

Mets righty Cory Mazzoni, a second-round selection last year, has made two excellent starts and two poor ones for Double-A Binghamton. In his good ones (such as the one from Saturday shown above) he's allowed one unearned run on eight hits in 14 innings. In his bad starts he's been hammered for 13 runs on 19 hits in 10 innings. At his best, Mazzoni has pitched at 92-94 mph with command of a solid slider and changeup http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/prospects/2012/07/top-pitching-performances-over-the-weekend-july-6-8/

Today -

A sort-of-good outing for Darin Gorski (3.89). 6.0-IP, only 1-R, but only 2-Ks and 3-BB. AA isn’t A+. Then it was blown in the 9th by Adrian Rosario (0.1-IP, 2-R, BS, L, 6.52. I love AA baseball. They make it so easy for me to weed out the non-prospects.

LF Eric Campbell just keeps hitting: 2-5, 1-R, .328

I don’t have any explanation why 2B Reese Havens (.217)  sat on the bench again and pinch hit. I’ll try and find out tomorrow.

A+ - St. Lucie: -

Tonight

W 4-1

Just when you thought ( and I thought) that we had saw the last starting game for Yohan Almonte (7-4, 6.08), he comes up with this one: (6.0-IP, 1-R, 5-H, 3-K, 1-BB, 81-52) I had this slot ready for Michael Fulmer or Luis Mateo.

13th save for Adam Kolarek (44.2-IP, 58-K, 14-BB, 1.61). Come on, we’ve seen enough here.

A – Savannah: -

A-Low – Brooklyn:

L, 2-5

Cyclones only had four hits so it’s hard to stand out anyone here.

RP David Wynn (10-IP, 1-ER, 10-K) and Huntington’s own John Mincone (11.2-IP, 1-ER, 15-K, 2-BB) continue to turn heads.

Rookie – Kingsport:

Tonight

Getting closer… L, 6-7

SP Steve Matz deserved better than this (6.0-IP, 0-ER, 6-K.

(Shaking head) Corey Oswalt 0.1-IP, 7-ER.

Hitter of the day – RF  Maikis De La Cruz   4-4, HR, 1-R, 2-RBI, .348

DSL Mets:

SP Lenny Rosario – 6.0-IP, 0-R, 3-H, 9-K, 3-BB, 2.70
