MLB –
Chipper Jones
on Melky 's pronounced
gestures in Wednesday's game: “That’s Melky, and that’s why he’s not here
anymore…. It won’t be forgotten.”
Dan Uggla has hit .113 w/1 HR and 39 strikeouts
in 97 ABs in his past 29 games, and .094 w/ 30 K in 64 ABs in his past 20 home
games.
OF Trevor Crowe was signed by LAA (oh well…)
Royals sign veteran
catcher Jason Kendall to a minor league contract
MLB - Mets:
Scott Kazmir will be starting at the Long Island
Ducks on Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
AAA – Buffalo:
RHP Chris Schwinden gets the start today and will pitch in
Coca-Cola Field for the first time in almost two months. The righty’s last
start at home was May 22 vs. Indianapolis when he allowed two earned in four
innings of a loss. Schwinden returned to the Bisons July 6 having been claimed
off waivers (Yankees) by the Mets. Schwinden has not allowed more than three
earned runs in any of his 10 starts with the Bisons this season.
INF Josh Satin had a hit and two walks last night and has
now reached base at least three times in six of his last 10 games. Satin also
has a walk in seven straight contests (11 total walks) and 21 total free passes
in his last 17 games. Satin’s .401 on-base percentage is tied for second best
in the IL, behind only Charlotte’s Dan Johnson (.416).
Today – W, 9-8
Not much pitching to
speak of… the combination of Chris Schwinden and
Elvin Ramirez were okay, but they did give up
four runs over seven innings. But, Fernenado Cabrera was
just dreadful, coughing up four more over two, with three walks as well.
Offense wise, there was
a lot of it. All 11 positional players had at least one hit… this isn’t easy to
do, folks. C Lucas May (.228) and DH Josh Satin (.298… told ya he’s get to
.300) were the only Bisons with two hits.
Attendance wise was
better… 9,847… but, you have the feeling that the stands were filled with
little kids paying close to nothing to get in. Sadly, this is the last year the
Mets will affiliate here. I wonder what happens to Valentino then?
AA-Binghamton:
LHP Mark Cohoon (4-7, 3.59) makes his 15th start of the
season and first of the year against the Bowie Baysox. The southpaw from
Burleson, Texas has allowed just one earned run in his last two starts
combined. He left with the chance to win in his last start against the Erie
SeaWolves on July 13, but the bullpen failed to preserve the lead. Cohoon
allowed one unearned run on five hits over six innings. He struck out a
season-high six batters. The southpaw has gone six innings or more in his last
six starts and eleven starts overall this season.
LHP Rick Zagone (2-2, 4.13) takes the mound for his fifth
start with the Baysox this season. He allowed one run on four hits in a win
over the Reading Phillies in his last start on July 14. He walked one and
struck out four in the contest. Zagone defeated the B-Mets in his first start
of the year with Bowie on June 26, allowing just one run on three hits over
seven innings. Zagone started the season with the Frederick Keys (High-A),
going 3-1 with a 2.91 ERA in 13 appearances (nine starts) in the Carolina
League. He also made two starts with the Norfolk Tides (AAA), going 1-0 while
not allowing a run in 11.1 innings. Selected in the 6th round of the 2008 draft
out of the University of Missouri-Columbia, Zagone is in his fifth pro season
and third with the Bowie Baysox.

Q - Any shot at Wilmer
Flores ever becoming a decent major league starter or has that ship
sailed?
A - Yes. Still just not sure at what
position.
Tonight – W, 4-3
SP Mark Cohoon continues to put up quality starts and one
must wonder what do you do with this guy come 2014. He obviously will pitch AAA
next season, and, he projects out as another Dillon Gee
SP5 type. Still, I can’t see any role for him with the future Mets. Last
night: 7.1-IP, 8-H but only 3-R, only 3-K, 1-BB, seasonal ERA:3.59.
RP Brad Holt blew the save… heck, he’s blown his career…
but Robert Carson pitched 1.2 scoreless innings
for the win.
Yippe! Big night for 2B
Reese Havens… 3-4, 2-R, double and, most importantly,
BA up to .231… .286 in his past ten games with 2-HR and 5-RBIs.
DH Wilmer Flores (.326) 2-4, and 3B Jefry Marte (.269) 2-5, 2-R.
A+ - St. Lucie: -
Tonight – L, 2-5
SP Eric Goeddel continues to
go in the wrong direction. Tonight: 6.1-IP, 8-H,5-ER,a strong 8-K, 1-BB, 4.09…that’s
three bad starts out of his last 4 outings. Jeffrey
Walters moped up with 1.2 scoreless innings.
Only five hits for St. Lucie. 2B Danny
Muno has moved up to hitting second.
A – Savannah:
-
Tonight, L 1-2
This was about as bad
as SP Michael Fulmer has: 6.0-IP, 1-ER, 4-H,
7-K, 2-BB, 2.67… he really is really for the next jump. Randy Fontanez pitched the last three (4.05) and give up the
winning run.
CF Gilbert Gomez continues to slump past his great May
(.345)… 0-4, .250. … only two Gnat hits.
A-Low – Brooklyn:
Tonight – Epic – W – 1-0,
15-innings
No, I did not stay up
for this one.
2B Richie Rodriguez (.155) doubed in 3B Dimas Ponce (.218) in the 15th for the
games only run… 11 hits, including RF Jonathan Clark (.225)
going 3-6.
Pitching… wow… 16
strikeouts… SP Gabriel Ynoa (2.75) threw six
scoreless innings, followed by Beck Wheeler (10.00),
Tim Peterson (2.00), John
Mincone (0.57), Paul Seward (0.00), Ernesto Yanez (win,
2.13) and Tyler Vanderheiden (0.00 – 6-SV) –
just, wow.
Rookie –
Kingsport:
Rained out…
Rookie - DSL
Mets:
SP Yoryi Nuez – 5.0-IP, 3-H, 1-R, 4-K, 1-BB, 2.68
LF Vincente Lupo – 1-4, 7th HR, 2-RBI, .361
RP Juan Marte – win, 2-0, 1.0-IP, 0-ER, 1-H, 1.45
