BREAKING NEWS - New Mets Manager

The Mets have offered their managerial job to Indians pitching coach Mickey Callaway, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post. The two sides are finalizing Callaway’s contract, Sherman adds (Twitter link).
The 42-year-old Callaway emerged as the top candidate for the job earlier Sunday, beating out Mets hitting coach Kevin Long, Mariners third base coach Manny Acta and White Sox third base coach Joe McEwing for the position. Callaway “stood out” from the rest during his interviews with Mets brass, Sherman tweets. The club’s hope is that Long will stay on as part of Callaway’s staff, per Sherman (on Twitter).
Callaway, who also drew interest from the manager-needy Phillies, developed an excellent reputation during his five-year run as the Indians’ pitching coach. In what will go down as Callaway’s final season on manager Terry Francona’s staff, the Indians boasted one of the most successful pitching staffs of all-time.

Doesn’t seem like a Wilpon hire. So I love it.

The anti-Collins.

I had said long ago that a team built around pitching might do well to consider the guy with the strongest pedigree in that area, but I never thought it would happen.

A tip of the chapeau to the front office for fooling everyone into thinking it was a done deal with Acta or Long.

What happens now if the Yankees decide not to renew Joe Girardi after missing the World Series? Will they be kicking themselves?

I am impressed with this outside-the-box thinking. I wonder whose idea it was? None of the usual suspects are known for creativity.

I bet he hires Alomar Jr to be his bench coach/catching instructor

I agree, Reese...a manager who is a pitching specialist for the Mets staff, which was the worst since 1962

Excellent hire, Sandy. Signs of the apocalypse, perhaps? Kidding aside, a young, well respected and successful managerial candidate for our team? Not what I was expecting (dreading). I was prepared for the third installment on Manny Acta or another retread.

It will be interesting to see who his coaching staff will include. More fresh ideas would be welcome.

I am not as confident as everybody else commenting here.
It is not very common for pitching coaches to become managers.
Additionally, the recent history, of those that have, is not great.

Examples: Joe Kerrigan, Larry Rothschild, Phil Regan, Marcel Lachemann, Ray Miller, Roger Craig, Jeff Torborg, Clyde King, Bob Lemon, John Farrel, & Bud Black.

Bud Black has been very good this season , Torborg & Craig took their teams to the playoffs Bob Lemon won a World Series etc

This is a Home run. Elevate Kevin Long to bench coach now

I have no idea how this will turn out, of course. And perhaps ieill end up hating the guy (hey, it happens. A lot with this team). But right now i’m surprised and happy that they went beyond the usual suspects and organizational retreads.

On the downside, this is the first time in my life that i’ve been older than the Mets’ skipper. And while i’ll Take youth any day over the aged Collins, i’m not sure how that makes me feel.

Consider all of the losing seasons that Torborg, Craig, & Lemons teams went through in order to still result in their sub 500 to just above 500 records then.

It didn't seem like the Met fan base was satisfied that Collins brought the Mets to the World Series and Playoffs in the more recent past.
