Mets Outright 5 off of 40-man Roster
OF Wuilmer Becerra
P Tyler Pill
P Erik Goeddel
OF Travis Taijeron
IF Phillip Evans
Mack - I was only surprised with the Becerra cut. Remember... there is a good chance no team picks these guys up and I would think that you might see Wuillmer back for a second chance, this time off of the 40-man roster that he just didn't earn to remain on.
And let's remember that Evans was a goner but was called up after the Las Vegas season was long gone. He was a long shot at best.

I’m surprised by Pil & Becerra being taken off the 40 man
Pill had AAAA written all over him.
Becerra did not and is a major disappointment.
Another thing to remember is that every organization needs to do the same thing (i.e. manage the 40 man roster, clear space for offseason moves, Rule V preparations), so it is unlikely that anyone else would pick up any of the "borderline" players the Mets just moved off the roster.
I agree that Becerra is the only name that may get another look.
I like the moves because it hints at some roster turnover in the offseason. You can't keep doing the same thing over and over and expect a different result, right?
Mike
Mike -
So far this off season I see progress (in Yoda-speak)
Evans is more of a surprise than Becerra. As you said, they need to clear space and there were going to be casualties. I see Montero and Smoker still are gasping for breath...I don't know that I'd have kept Matt Reynolds around either. Cecchini could always be the emergency backup if Rosario needed a day off, but you'd have to figure he's probably slated for 155 games or more if he remains healthy.
The Mets need to clear room for their next rule 5 class, and they need to add talent from outside the organization via free agency and/or trades. Hopefully this is a "yoda-like" sign that they are moving in that direction.
Yeah, Reese, I'm a little surprised at Evans. Grassy knoll theory: Evans didn't play in Sept. despite a few very impressive AB's because they were going to expose him.
Maybe some trades are envisioned because after Uceta, who would you protect that you really needed to. Rosenbloom? Guillorme? Bautista? ??
Maybe Putin is behind this.
I am confused by Becerra and Evans.
Becerra may be another guy who will never be the same after his early 2016 injury. His power was AWOL in 2017 and he fanned too much. Who knows. He'll probably go 97th LAD and win a Triple Crown.
Evans is puzzling only in that the Mets minors is weak, and you have to wonder who will be on the 40 man while he is off of it. I have not tried to figure out the 40 man to see why. If all we saw of Line Drive Phil Evans was his excellent but brief Sept Mets cameo, so be it and I wish him well. We do have tons of IFs.
Taijeron never could cut the Ks enough to be a real factor, and even with His good power, he lacked Aaron Judge type power to overcome that strikeout problem. Power hitting outfielders left in the minors? NONE.
So in other words they are rule 5 fodder
There really is no reason to protect a 23 year old OF who struggled with Single A. No team is really going to add him to the 40 man at this point. He's still in the organization. If he has the kind of year they thought he would this year when they protected him last year coming off injury he'll be added back. I wouldnt be surprised if either pitcher ends up at another organization.
