Tom Brennan - MY METS PROSPECTS: # 41 THRU # 45
Ever onward we march, as today I lay out 5 more of my top 50 Mets prospects - please look to the right column for prior player rankings.
#41 CANNON CHADWICK - I could have had him ranked ahead of 4th rounder Tony Dibrell, as the 9th round 22 year old righty reliever Chadwick was hellacious in 2017 for Brooklyn: 1-1, 1.33, 27 innings, 40 Ks (Kaboom!).
I only have him ranked lower than Dibrell (ranked several slots higher) due to his being a year older and drafted 5 rounds later. Tony was shaky for Brooklyn, but also showed he could fan many. Time will tell which of the two is better. EVERY TEAM NEEDS A CANNON!
# 42 ANTHONY DIMINO - He has just one question - how come the other Anthony (Kay?) is ranked # 19, and he is ranked # 42? Answer: Darned if I know - and it's my Prospect Ranking series! Heck, Dimino should probably be # 19 instead. Too late, pal, that article has already sailed.
The 5'11", 175 lefty hitter (a 28th rounder in 2015) plays the infield, outfield, catches, pitches (well) in a pinch, and has good speed. But can he HIT?
Oh, he can hit, Alice, and Core A Apple too, Ralphie boy.
In 2015 and 2016, 232 at bats and he hits .312.
In 2017, he plays 3 games for Columbia, goes 7 for 10 and is promoted...after THREE GAMES!
From April 12 thru May 7, he hits .356 for St Lucie. Up that point, .406 hitting in the two leagues.
What next? Well, he is a Met, and red hot, so he naturally gets hurt. He misses about 50 games, returns in late June, and long story short, plays just 60 games, hits .330 for the season, .407 on base, just 29 Ks...but virtually no power, with just a .373 slug %.
To be brief, I really, really hope in AA he gets in 120+ games next year, and this offseason, bulks up a bit to add pop - because career .323 minor leaguers are scarce - the last one, TJ Rivera, made the Mets, so maybe some time in 2019, this versatile dude will too.
Anthony, I made a mistake, you are my # 19 prospect. Can you ever forgive me?
# 43 YOEL ROMERO - I don't like to pick DSL guys, typically, since so many of the ones with decent stats that do make it statewide never get out of Rookie Ball - how do you spell CRAPSHOOT? But this 19 year old developmental leaguer had a super season, as in 67 games, he hit .364/.439/.464, fanned just 31 times, and stole 17 bases. So he is my # 43.
Hopefully, like a 17 year old named Andres Giminez, who in 2016 in the DSL and put up similarly super numbers and got to play in Full A ball in 2017, Romero will be ticketed for Columbia in 2018, if deemed ready for it.
I'd be remiss to pass over his defense. Playing 3rd, second, short, and the OF in 2017, he flashed major leather:

TWO ERRORS! Si, Si, Senor!
# 44 ALI SANCHEZ - summarized simply - his hitting in rookie ball in 2016 and in Full A in 2017 sucked - low average and very scant power - but he struck out little and has the size and youth to show in 2018 that 2016 and 2017 with the stick were not indicative of hitting incompetence. But his hitting has to improve - a lot - to have a major league career.
He is simply, on defense, one of the best catching prospects ever for the Mets, as he throws out 50% of base stealers.
Hit and make the big leagues, Ali, it is a simple formula.
# 45 DASH WINNINGHAM - going into 2017, I thought he'd be top 20 by season's end. He should, now that the 2017 season is complete, most likely not be top 50. I am throwing him a lifeline, because, heck, I like the name. (Someone told me Juan Lagares' real name is CRASH).
Dash repeated with Columbia in 2017, and his batting stats were almost exactly what he did for Columbia in 2016...so that lack of any progress whatsoever from the big first baseman put a major damper on his ranking, in my view.
He ranks behind Dom Smith, Kevin Plawecki, Wilmer Flores, TJ Rivera, Pete Alonzo, Jhoan Urena, and Matt Oberste in my book on the Mets' first basemen power rankings, so he needs a big surge if he is going to become relevant in the future first base conversation at Citifield.

Ed, I hope you are right. Dimino has really nice versatility, quickness, ability to make contact, and hitting .330 career is none-too-shabby. He does not need to be a power hitter - but he is at the very low end of the power scale right now, he needs to get closer to the middle of it. And he can have an MLB career. 120+ games this year - let's see what he can do in AA.

Yes, and I also hope what Chadwick did in 2017 was no fluke - higher competition will show if his 2017 was real or Memorex.
I like the potential of Domino but the others don't do anything for me at this point in their budding career.

I think maybe you guys are coming at Dimino from the wrong angle. In 467 minor league ABs he has but one HR but also has 21 SBs. Have him work on getting into the 30+ elite range of base stealing and that .323 AVG plays very well.
Reese, I largely agree...but Dimino does at least need to substantially ramp up doubles and triples. It is not just homers that for him are scarce.
