Tom Brennan - MY METS PROSPECTS: # 24 DREW SMITH
One slot after my #23 prospect, Irishman PJ Conlon, I now include another presumed Irishman, Drew Smith.
Obtained in the Lucas Duda trade with the Tampa Bay Rays (and Lucas was hitting just .179 for the Rays through September 22, so I suspect they would like a trade do-over), Smith is a hard throwing 23 year old former 3rd round pick and righty reliever. With 4 teams in 2017, including the Mets' AA squad, Smith was fine and dandy:
4-4, 1.65 in 42 games, with 60 IP and an 0.90 WHIP and 57 Ks. When used as a closer, he was only 7 for 12 in save opportunities, but one would imagine that was at least in part due to normal nerves.
I read in an SN Nation article at the time of his trade to the Mets' organization that Smith has been clocked as high as 99 MPH, usually sits in the 92-96 MPH range, and has developed an excellent curve that scouts also rated as a plus pitch for him.
Sounds exciting to me. After all, having suffered through a historically bad Mets' bullpen in 2017, the team needs fresh, young blood, as we might well expect Smith to prove to be in the not-too-distant future.
I for one see Drew joining the Mets at some point in the Queens pen in 2018.
When he then goes to Washington to play against the Nats, I imagine a headline with a ring to it will be:
MR SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON.
I look forward to seeing this young Mr. Smith arm in Queens.

NATS LOSE NATS LOSE NATS LOSE.... poor babies dam shame LOL. Sorry but I gotta feel good about something this off season. So Thomas of the 23 or so relievers Sandy picked up Smith might actually be good?
And they lost a heartbreaker, Gary, and the mighty Max Scherzer got rocked and took the loss. We, NAT-URALLY, are thrilled

Keep dissing the Nats and we will never get the Syracuse affiliate in 2018 :)
As for Drew, I have him at #11 but that might be a little high. Going to adjst that.
Wouldn't it be nice if one of the baker's half-dozen of mediocre relievers acquired for All Stars actually amounts to something? Drew Smith was the only one coming over who had impressive numbers. Let's hope it's not a mirage.
Reese, we need to push into the post-mirage era in Queens
