John From Albany – Mets Breakfast Links 5/15/2020

Good Morning, it’s the 6 year anniversary of Jacob deGrom’s MLB debut, Chili Davis explains what Pete Alonso must do to improve on outstanding rookie season, and Rob Manfred says MLB could lose up to $4 billion if there is no season.

NY Post: Rob Manfred: MLB could lose up to $4 billion if there is no season. “That would amount to about $133.3 million per team.” About health issues ‘Manfred said, ‘The protocols for returning to play, the health-related protocols, are about 80 pages in length. They’re extraordinarily detailed…At the end of the day, however, if there’s players with either health conditions or just their own personal doubts, we would never force them or try to force them to come back to work. They can wait until they feel they’re ready to come.’”

NY Post: Rick Porcello’s redemption quest with Mets looks different now. “Rick Porcello has bounced back from a rough season before. Following a disappointing first year with the Red Sox in 2015, the right-hander was able to deliver his best performance a year later, when he won the AL Cy Young Award by going 22-4 with a 3.15 ERA.”

NY Post: Jacob deGrom reached untouchable level in second Cy Young season. “And to close out the season in September, Jacob deGrom finished with 23 consecutive scoreless innings and didn’t give up a single run in his last three starts. He went 3-0 in his final four starts, posting 35 strikeouts, two walks and a 0.32 ERA.”

The Mets on Thursday helped deliver 300 pounds of hot dogs and franks from Hofmann Sausage Company to Syracuse’s Rescue Mission. The bounty — 1,200 foot-longs total — will benefit those the Rescue Mission is helping during the coronavirus crisis.

He has a spot in the record books and trivia contests as the last American League pitcher to get a hit before the designated hitter was introduced in 1973.

Cleveland Indians claimed Brook Fordyce of the New York Mets on waivers on May 15, 1995.

1962 - Cubs P Barney Schultz ties Roy Face's major-league record by relieving in his 9th consecutive game for Chicago. Today's effort doesn't help as the Cubs lose, 6 - 5 in 13 innings against the Mets. Roger Craig, en route to a 10-24 year, is the winner, while Tony Balsamo loses to notch his only career decision.

1970 - After the Mets have a day off, ace Tom Seaver matches Gary Gentry by allowing one hit in beating the Phillies and Woodie Fryman, 4 - 0. The two consecutive one-hitters tie a major league record.

1976: At Cincinnati, the Mets' Tom Seaver loses, 2 - 0, to the Reds as Santo Alcala pitches a four-hitter.

1992 - The Mets' newly-acquired Bret Saberhagen pitches five innings before leaving with tendinitis in his pitching hand that will effectively sideline him for the rest of the year. He will not win another game this year following today's 4 - 1 decision over the Dodgers.

1999:  When SS Alex Arias of the Philadelphia Phillies snags Mike Piazza's line drive in the 6th inning, he starts the Phillies' 30th franchise triple play and their 10th against a team from New York City. It is just the second triple play turned in Veterans Stadium. Arias has participated in two triple plays for the Phils; he initiated one last season against the San Francisco Giants. The Mets still win, 9 - 7.

2014: In his first major league outing, Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom does something no other member of the pitching staff has been able to do yet this season: get a hit. His 3rd-inning single off Chase Whitley of the Yankees breaks a record 0-for-64 drought by Mets pitchers at the plate this season. DeGrom, who had been an infielder his first couple of years in college before becoming a pitcher, also pitches very well, allowing 1 run in 7 innings, but is a hard-luck loser, 1 - 0, as Whitley, Dellin Betances, Adam Warren and David Robertson combine on a three-hit shutout. Whitley, who is also making his big league debut, gives up no runs in 4 2/3 innings and also collects his first hit, off deGrom.

Former Houston Astros player and Yankees GM Bob Watson has passed away at age 74. R.I.P.

Also heard yesterday that former Mets manager Art Howe is in the I.C.U. with corona virus. Get well, Art.

Morning Bob,

Bob Watson did a great job as Yankees GM - RIP.

I believe Watson may have scored baseball's one millionth run. A great player and always a threat at the plate.

While I don't really think Howe was a great manager, I liked the fact that he was working as a computer programmer when a co-worker suggested a tryout. It turned into a ML career. Nice story.

Yes, I believe you are correct about Bob Watson scoring the millionth run. Both players seemed to kill the Mets when they played. That's just my perception. I think Reese will have more about Art Howe tomorrow at 8 AM.

Best wishes for Art Howe.

Great look at Wolf - being compared to Walker Bueller is pretty great.
