Mack – Sunday Thoughts: Opening Baseball, 5-Round Draft, Safety Protocols, Kevin Mitchell, UDFAs

Good morning.

We have gotten no closer to starting this season. The owners presented their proposal to the Player’s Association and it was initially met with stone silence. Forget the fact that the owners would lose less if they kept the season shut down for the season. Forget the fact that California has now said that they won’t let any events played in large stadiums ‘through the fall’. And forget the fact that you can’t guarantee any of the players their health and safety if they start traveling and playing again.

Our team plays in New York City. Our team plays in Kew Gardens. Go to Kew Gardens tomorrow and walk down Roosevelt Avenue without a mask on.

Come on man!

https://blogs.fangraphs.com/shortened-2020-mlb-draft-a-shortsighted-pound-foolish-move/ - Craig Edwards thoughts on the 5-man draft –

Lowering the potential talent level in baseball lowers the quality of play for fans and potentially decreases interest in the sport over the long-term, though that deficit is perhaps more intangible and theoretical. Passing up on young, cost-controlled talent only to have to pay for more expensive later on is just bad business. It’s shortsighted and its justifications are flimsy. In a time of uncertainty, MLB should be trying to bring as many talented young players as possible into the professional ranks. Failing to do so for what amounts to one minimum-salaried player this year plus half that amount the next two years prioritizes the 2020 bottom line over the sport’s future.

Don’t take it personal, Uber and Lyft, but major league ballplayers will be strongly discouraged from riding in your cars this summer.

Fans, you can cheer for all your favorite players from your living room couch, but please don’t try hanging outside team hotels because players will be advised not to sign autographs or pose for pictures.

High-fives will be strictly forbidden. So will spitting.

Nightingale also points out:

There is concern throughout MLB that a second wave of the coronavirus will send the country back into lockdown in the fall just as playoffs are coming to a crescendo.

Baseball America posts what they felt were the top 5 undrafted free agents ever. They were:

          1. Bruce Sutter, Cubs

2. Bobby Bonilla, Pirates

3. Frank White, Royals

4. Dan Quisenberry, Royals

5. Kevin Mitchell, Mets

Mitchell played in 18 major league seasons, posting a .284/.360/.520/.880 stat line. It included 234 home runs and 760 RBIs.

He debuted for the Mets in 1984 (14-AB, .214), returned to AAA-Tidewater in 1985 (348-AB, .290), and played a full season for the Mets in 1986 (328-AB, .277, 12-HR).

Traded by New York Mets with Shawn Abner, Stan Jefferson, Kevin Armstrong and Kevin Brown to San Diego Padres in exchange for Kevin McReynolds, Gene Walter and Adam Ging (December 11, 1986)

            4. Mets

The Mets are the only other team with the Pirates and Phillies to sign five future All-Stars as NDFA’s: Kevin Mitchell, Jeff Reardon, Heath Bell, Heathcliff Slocumb and Jim Bibby. The five combined for 11 all-star appearances, and Mitchell is the only NDFA to win an MVP award. The Mets also found NDFA successes in 15-year big league reliever Greg Harris and popular former utilityman T.J Rivera.

I'm not walking down there without a mask. I'm not walking down there with a mask.

I dunno about the negatives of just 5 rounds. Guys would still sign after round 5. Two less minor league teams? Also not as upset. Just pull up the stats of each team from 2019. So many guys who don't perform. Can the teams figure who those guys are up front and not sign them without jettisoning a guy who would later have beaten the odds and become a viable major leaguer? I'd say extremely few guys would get bumped who would later become major leaguers.

It would also raise the talent of all remaining teams, and maybe guys would develop faster. How many guys do well pitching against weak talent only to struggle against higher talent? Throw them into the fire sooner, those who adapt will climb more quickly in terms of skills.

California is crazy - they have a far lower infection rate than NY, and won't allow fanless games? LA still too hot in their Mayor's opinion? Let them play in Fresno.

I still think that any players who want to skip the season should, and other guys would eagerly grab the chance to play. If they are concerned about the fall, have 35 player rosters and play a few double headers a week. Doubleheaders would shorten the season by two weeks.

And play the games in Binghamton which is a very, very low infection area. Their whole county has a lower infection rate than Corona Queens. Just don't play in Queens. Cuomo will still get his NYS payroll tazes, even if de Blasio wouldn't bet NYC's, and I would imagine Binghamton would be willing to share those suddenly huge taxes with NYC. If the federal govt can share tax moneys, so could Binghamton.

Very well said.

Almost a post in itself.

Syracuse also has low infection rates and a newly refurbished stadium.
