So, we
know the draft will be five rounds now.
Here are
my picks, if they are still on the board when the Mets pick.
Round 1:
Pete
Crow-Armstrong OF Harvard-Westlake HS (CA)
Crow-Armstrong is a 5-tool outfielder that could be the best
overall offensive player in the draft. He’s 6-1, a very good runner and
fielder, and posts an above average home to first times. A scout told be that
he is a ‘skinny Jarred Kelenic’, though he feels that he will muscle up over
the next two seasons. Timed at 6.51 in the 60-yard dash.
It seems to me that this guy could be placed in center
immediately and could easily have an ETA of 2023. He will be a star of this
game.
Round 2:
Jack
Leftwich RHP Florida
Leftwich is a classic 6-4, 220 righty who was a top 50 high
school pick in 2017. His fastball comes in at the 93-96 range. Also has a very
good changeup and slider. Has had problems with consistency (needs to work on
BB/9), but flashes SP1-2 material at times.
I would start him in
Columbia on opening day 2021.
Shortened 2020 Stats: 4-starts, 2-0, 4.15, 1.13, 21.2-IP, 23-K
Round 3:
Bryce
Jarvis RHP Duke
There is good chance Jarvis won’t be around at three, but, if
he is, I would take his name of the board with lightening speed. He is a draft eligible
sophomore who was a good pitcher through last year. In the off-season, he went
to Driveline and worked on his velocity and pitch creation. The results in this
short 2020 season are amazing.
He threw a complete game no-hitter in February against Cornell
(who throws a complete game, no less a no-hitter in February?) He also had
three straight 10-K outings. His 2020 stats are: 4-starts, 3-1, 0.67-ERA,
27-IP, 40-K, 2-BB.
I would put Jarvis in the 2021 Columbia rotation, next to
Leftwich, Matt Allen, and Josh Wolf.
Round 4:
Trevor
Hauver OF Arizona State
Hauver is a mature hitter that also has a unique ability to
create a walk. Was a very powerful One-Two punch at ASU with Spencer Torkelson. Does not have a standout tool, but does
project as a spray hitter with the ability to also get on base through being
walked. Was not known as a home run hitter but seemed to have added power to
his game in the early 2020 season.
I think he has a solid chance to become a Mets utility
outfielder someday and I would open him up next year in the Columbia outfield.
2020 short season stats:
17-G, 59-AB, .339, 1.189-OPS, 5-HR, 20-RBI, .695-Slug
Round 5:
Kevin Parada C Loyola HS (CA)
Parada is a 6-0, 200 pound power right handed hitter that
currently shows most pull, which could be adjusted as he grows. He is
considered an excellent defensive catcher. Stays very low behind the plate and
can rear back and throw out runners at second with, what sometimes looks, at
ease. He also is fast on the bases, having been clocked at 6.72. Scouts say he
should be able to play other positions and could be a future candidate as a
Mets corner outfielder.
Could give Francisco Alvarez ample
competition as the Mets future catcher.

I picked these players using the 'best player available' system.
I did try to avoid infielders.
I couldn't avoid pitchers. There just are too many good ones here.
Mack,
Mets have 6 picks this year - they have an extra pick from the Phillies signing Wheeler.

John
I wasn't sure that plan would be honored in this new crazy system.
Thanks for correcting me.
As for six picks, you can't have enough in this rich talent pool.
Just hope they stay aggressive with the 'undrafted' free agents who would have been drafted under the normal rules in rounds 6 - 10 and later.
Jon
I am sure they will for at least 15 more players.
Mack:
I agree, my understanding is that the savings by limiting the length of the draft is around $1 million per team. if they are aggressive and smart (are we taking about the Mets?) for this year's max of $20,000 per undrafted player, they would only spend $300,000 for 15 players who might otherwise have all been 6th-7th-8th round quality. a bargain that I'm sure teams like the Yankees and Dodgers will take advantage of.
Excellent draft choices, Mack
Jon
Nobody will take advantage of this other than being a popularity contest.
Sure, teams like the Yanks and Dodgers fall into this category but this could be happening at the perfect time for the Mets.
They too play in The Big Apple where the big buck endorsement money is but the 'new Mets' are a team these players might want to become part of.
Still... lotsnof talent here and plenty to go around.
