John From Albany – Mets Breakfast Links 5/2/2020

Good morning, Jordany Valdespin gets a mention in the Blast From The Past, the Players Association rejects MLB's 2020 draft proposal, Happy Birthday Erasmo Ramirez, Live Baseball is underway in Taiwan, and the Wilpons may be able to borrow more from MLB.

Forbes: Wilpons Could Get Help In Sale Of Mets From Increase In MLB Debt. “Sources speculate that the Mets could have the ability to borrow another $20 million or so from the league. Not a ton of money, but arguably enough to make it a lot easier for them to ride out the storm and sell when the sport’s economics are better or more predictable.”

Kyle Newman: MLB’s ‘divisions’ plan would make life easier for New York Mets, Yankees.  “The reigning NL East champion Atlanta Braves would be replaced with the Pittsburgh Pirates. That would mean the East division would have four of the bottom seven teams in MLB from 2019. Considering that each team is going to play each other at least 12 times in the upcoming season, that would mean the Mets and Yankees would each play 48 games against some of the worst teams in baseball.”

SNY.TV: Beyond the Booth: Gary Cohen on what Mets and Yankees being in same division would mean for rivalry. “Some believe that placing the Mets and Yankees together in a regular season grouping would detract from the passion of the rivalry. I disagree. You only have to look at the NHL, and the ongoing rivalries of the Rangers, Islanders and Devils, to see that division grouping for those local rivals only enhances the competition among fan bases.”

Real glad they mentioned Jose Peroza, liked him a lot last year in Brooklyn.  I had Mark Vientos and Jose Peroza both on the St, Lucie Roster this year

Mack’s Blast from the Past comes from 5/2/13 – Reese Kaplan - Should Terry Collins Come Back in 2014? Love what Reese said about Terry’s handling of personal favorite Jordany Valdespin.  “Jordany Valdespin has had a large number of big hits to win games for the Mets, has more baserunning speed than anyone else on the club, yet due to his personality Collins is “punishing” him by keeping him glued to the bench. Does anyone remember the stories about what kind of a person Kevin Mitchell was?  What about Hall of Famer Ty Cobb?  At some point in the interest of your club you push aside your personal feelings and give the players who have the greatest potential an opportunity to play.”

1968
Mets hitter Bud Harrelson becomes the first batter in baseball history to gain a 3-0 ball-strike count advantage from the on-deck circle when umpire Ed Vargo penalizes Phillies reliever John Boozer for going to his mouth inside the 18-foot circle of the mound. Philadelphia manager Gene Mauch, incensed about the ball one call, orders his pitcher to do it again for ball two, and then again for ball three, which promptly gets his right-hander and himself thrown out of the game, a 3-0 loss to New York at Shea Stadium.
1983
Jose Oquendo makes his major league debut, grounding into a force out as a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning of a 3-2 loss to Houston. The 19 year-old rookie shortstop, born on July 4, 1963, is the first person to play for the Mets who is younger than the franchise, which started in 1962.

2008
Jose Reyes is thrown out at home plate in an unusual attempt to complete the cycle with an inside-the-park homer. The shortstop's four hits pace the Mets' 7-2 win over the Diamondbacks, the club's 14th victory in the last 15 games played against Arizona at Chase Field.

1987: After having missed spring training and the first month of the season because of collusion, Montreal Expos outfielder Tim Raines debuts by going 4 for 5, including a 10th-inning grand slam, in an 11 - 7 win over the New York Mets.

2010: The Phillies take over first place in the NL East by beating Mets ace Johan Santana like a rag doll. Santana gives up 10 runs, including 8 in the 4th inning, which he fails to complete. With the Mets leading 5 - 3, he issues a two-out bases-loaded walks to his opposite, Jamie Moyer, then Shane Victorino blasts a grand slam to open the floodgates. Chase Utley adds a two-run shot to chase Santana; Placido Polanco and Ryan Howard had homered earlier against him. The Phillies win, 11 - 5.

2019: Noah Syndergaard of the Mets pitches a complete game shutout and also homers off Tyler Mahle for the game's only run as he defeats the Reds, 1 - 0. The last player to have managed that particular feat had been Bob Welch, back in 1983.

I hate to say it, but can you think of one successful major leaguer who previously fanned 135 time in his first 376 plate appearances in rookie ball? Neither can I! And that is Jaylen Palmer. Unless they think he can fan a lot less against much tougher pitching going forward.

In 2012 Joey Gallo struck out 78 times in 260 PA (30%) in Rookie Ball and Low A. In 2013 Joey struck out 172 times - 467 PA (36.8%) in Rookie Ball and the Sally League.

In the lover levels Joey had years where he hit as high as .271 (Palmer has hit .310 and .260 in his two years). However, in 5 MLB seasons Joey Gallo has hit .212. That could be what we see from Jaylen Palmer if he doesn't cut down on the K's. He played 2019 as an 18 year old, and so has time to adjust.

To show how much baseball has changed, in 2002 Steve Phillips offered David Wright to the Blue Jays for Jose Cruz Jr, (luckily the Blue Jays turned him down). Steve did this because David was in the midst of a 114 K season out of 582 PA (19.5%). Today, 19.5% would be celebrated.

If Palmer turns into Joey Gallo, we will all be thrilled. I just think it is very unlikely. I remember Vicente Lupis and Ivan Wilson flamed out in the lower minors due to massive Ks that they couldn’t shake. Both had big power, but...

Wuilmer Becerra and Cory Vaughn petered out higher, both fanning more as they rose.

Kirk made it, despite Ks, but was ever a marginal player.

Taijeron could never shake it, and was abysmal in his MLB trial run.

And Eric Campbell fanned at a low rate in the minors, but a high rate in the majors.

I was always hopeful for Jeff McNeil because of low Ks and high average. Unless a guy has mammoth power, chances to me are very slim if high Ks in minors.

Good points. That is why I like Patrick Mazeika. Just 248 Ks n 1,801 Minor plate appearances. One of tge top RBI men in the Eastern League too. Yet, no one grabbed him in the rule 5 draft last year. Teams are way too obsessed with power and age. That is why it took Jeff McNeil so long to get to the majors and why, even after he came to the majors and hit in 2018, the Mets still felt the need to go out and trade for $24 m a year Cano and almost included McNeil in the trade.
