MACK – Hot Arms – Justin Armbruester, Gabriel Rodriguez, Cristofer Gomez

Let’s get to know three more hot Mets pitchers:

PERIOD:    7/9 – 7/22

Justin Armbruester/AA-Binghamton – 0.90-WHIP, 3.1-IP, 6-K, BB, 0.00

Justin Armbruester is a 27-year-old right-handed pitcher (born October 21, 1998, in Bellevue, WA; 6'4", 235 lbs) in the New York Mets organization.

The Mets selected him from the Baltimore Orioles in the Triple-A phase of the Rule 5 Draft in December 2025.

He played at the University of New Mexico (after Pacific Lutheran), where he was Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Year as a senior in 2021 (5-2, 3.58 ERA, 101 K in ~77 IP).

Draft: 12th round (347th overall) by the Orioles in 2021; signed for $100K.

Minor League Track Record (key seasons):

Strong lower-level performance: 2022 (A+/AA): 6-2, 3.85 ERA, 126 K in 117 IP, 1.07 WHIP.

2023 (AA/AAA): 6-6, 3.56 ERA, 109 K in 121.1 IP.

2024 (AAA Norfolk): Rough full season — 5-11, 7.54 ERA, but still 131 K in 119.1 IP (high strikeout ability).

2025: Limited to 3 appearances (lat injury requiring surgery).

2026: Rehabbing with Mets affiliates (mostly relief so far); very small-sample strong results in limited innings.

He’s been primarily a starter but has seen bullpen time during rehab. Control and consistency have been issues at higher levels (especially AAA in 2024), with elevated walks and home runs at times, though he generates plenty of strikeouts.

Pitching Repertoire

Armbruester features a four-pitch mix (sometimes described with five offerings) built around a low-90s fastball. He throws from a deceptive arm slot/funky action that helps his stuff play up.

4-Seam Fastball (primary, ~92-95 mph, touches higher): Riding pitch with hop/vertical movement. Good for missing bats up in the zone. Often 50-60% usage.

Sweeper (low-80s, e.g., ~78-80 mph): High-spin, horizontal break; strong whiff pitch, especially vs. righties.

Cutter (~85-88 mph): Added/improved around 2022; good for weak contact and vs. lefties (runs in on hands). Often generates swings-and-misses.

Curveball (~75-77 mph): Added for better lefty coverage; vertical drop.

Slider/Changeup (occasional/variable): He has worked on these too (e.g., a slider in the mid-80s or change/splitter experiments for opposite-side movement).

Recent pitch data (e.g., 2026 low-level rehab and prior AAA) shows solid Stuff+ grades on his fastball, sweeper, and cutter, with good spin and extension. He attacks the zone and uses data/TrackMan heavily for refinement.

Strengths: High strikeout rate, multi-pitch mix with movement variety, deception, and willingness to develop/adapt pitches.

Challenges: Command/walks can spike at AAA; homer-prone at times; injury history (2025 lat surgery).

As of mid-2026, he’s working his way back from injury in the Mets system, mostly in relief during rehab. He has the stuff for a back-end starter or multi-inning relief role if he can sharpen consistency and command. He’s a data-driven, high-work-ethic pitcher who improved rapidly in the Orioles system.

Gabriel Rodriguez/AA-Binghamton – 1.00-WHIP, 4-IP, 5-K, 4-BB, 0-ER, 0.00

Gabriel Rodriguez (LHP, New York Mets organization) is a 27-year-old left-handed reliever (born April 9, 1999, in Bayamón, Puerto Rico; 6'1", 193 lbs) signed to a minor-league contract by the Mets in February 2026 and assigned to the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (AA).

He was originally drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 31st round (2018) out of Miami Dade College South after not signing with the Twins in 2017. He has bounced around (Braves → Rockies system → indy ball/Mexico/Puerto Rican winter league) and spent time out of affiliated ball before the Mets signing.

2026 Performance (as of recent updates)

Binghamton (AA): Strong strikeout stuff in a relief/occasional spot start role (~20-29 appearances, 22-35+ IP). ERA around 4.0-4.4, but with elite K rates (often 13-14+ K/9, 30-35+% K%). High walk rate and some homer issues, leading to a higher WHIP (~1.5).

In the 2025-26 Puerto Rican winter league (Leones de Ponce), he was a co-leader in strikeouts as a reliever, which helped earn the Mets' interest after two years largely outside organized U.S. ball.

Career minors: High-K relief profile (career ~14+ K/9 in some stretches) but command and consistency have been issues, with ERAs often in the 6-8 range in earlier years due to walks and hard contact.

His profile fits a high-leverage reliever archetype: high K/9, challenging command, and effectiveness in shorter outings. In winter ball and recent minors, the strikeouts come from a lively fastball and breaking stuff with late movement.

He has MLB upside as a lefty bullpen arm if he sharpens control and limits hard contact/homers. The Mets signing was seen as an intriguing low-risk depth/add for bullpen help with upside.

Cristofer Gomez/A+ Brooklyn – 1.00-WHIP/3-IP, 3-K, BB, 0-ER, 0.00

Cristofer Gomez (born May 13, 2003) is a right-handed pitching prospect in the New York Mets organization. The 6'4", 222-lb Dominican (from Montecristi) signed as an international free agent/UDFA in June 2022.

He primarily works as a reliever (with occasional spot starts) and has shown strong strikeout ability in the lower minors.

2022 (DSL): Dominant debut — 3-0, 0.40 ERA, 37 K in 22.2 IP (high K/9).

2023-2024: Mostly in FCL and Low-A St. Lucie; solid but with control issues.

2025: Big step forward in Low-A (7-1, 3.76 ERA, 62 K in 40.2 IP) before struggling a bit in High-A Brooklyn (5.82 ERA in 17 IP).

Overall minors (through 2026): Strong strikeout rates (often 13+ K/9 in bursts), but walks and consistency remain works in progress. He's viewed as a high-upside arm with projection remaining due to his size and delivery.

Fastball (primary pitch): Sits in the mid-90s mph (can reach higher, with some reports noting potential for plus velocity). His 6'4" frame and extension (over 7 feet) make it play faster to hitters. It's his main weapon for generating swings-and-misses.

Slider (key secondary): His most effective off-speed pitch, especially a low-zone version that generates many strikeouts and weak contact. It's a swing-and-miss tool that has improved.

Other pitches: Developing changeup, possible cutter/sweeper variations, and curveball elements (reports mention a broader arsenal in progress). His secondaries and command are still refining, which explains some of the walk rates.

Profile: Big, projectable frame suited for the bullpen (high-leverage potential) or even a starting role if he improves control and consistency of secondaries. Scouts compare the velocity + slider combo to late-inning reliever upside (e.g., power arms like Clase/Chapman types in some Dominican reports).

He's a name to watch in the Mets system as he climbs toward Double-A and beyond, especially if he tightens his command while maintaining the velo and slider bite.
