The Keepers - #106 - OF - Julio Concepcion

106. Julio Concepcion

LF Concepcion was signed by the Mets as an undrafted international free agent in 2007. He played for the DSL Mets in 2007, hitting .243/.362/.341/.703, in 173 at bats. This included 42 hits and 26 walks. He hated home games (.187), while loved being on the road (.305).

He returned to the DSL Mets in 2008 and improved his stats to: .285/.361/.393/.754 in 267 at bats. He also had only five errors playing left field all season. Now, I know those stats don’t seem like all that, but this is the DSL… the .285 batting average led the league, and Concepcion also led the league in RBIs (40) and doubles (16).

In 2009, Concepcion owned the GCL Mets’ left field with the most at bats by any other player on the team, 160. His stats were impressive: .306/.354/.356/.710, only 5-E, 11-SB.

1-1-10 Forecast: You’re not going to see any power here, but Concepcion continues to turn out better stats each year he plays. At 6-4, 195, you would hope that he could beef up a little and improve on his anemic slugging percentage, but he has still earned a bump up to Brooklyn in 2010.

7-15-10: - Folks in the Mets organization are real pleased with the progress of Concepcion. He was assigned to repeat the GCL level this season and is proving every day that he’s ready to move up. Today, he went 3-4 and raised his seasonal batting average to .310. The real good news is his slugging percentage is at a career high of .451. He turns 21 in September.

2011 Forecast: Concepcion impressed in 2010 at the GCL level: .282//326/.466/.792, 174-AB… he also showed a little pop with 4-HR, but needs to increase his walks, only 7 in 2010. He’s young and it will be interesting to see where the new Mets brass sends him in 2011. My guess: Kingsport.

8-8-11: - Stock Up – LF Julio Concepcion – Concepcion is having a wonderful season for the Kingsport Mets. He went 3-5, 3-R, 2-doubles, 1-RBI this afternoon, raising his seasonal stat line to: .326/.352/.442/.794. This is the fifth year in the Mets organization for the 6-4 Concepcion; however, he only turns 21 this October.

3-31-12 – Concepcion seems to keep below the media focus. He has played five years in the Mets organization and will play 2012 as a 22-year old. Batted .306 in 2009 for GCL… hit .282 in 2010 again for GCL, and .299 in 2011 for K-Port. Moving very slow. 6-4… are we missing omething here?

Cutnpaste: Fernando Martinez, Zach Lutz, Julio Concepcion, Logan Verrett, Drew Pomeranz

Fernando Martinez:

8-11-11: - http://metsmerizedonline.com/2011/08/baseball-americas-mets-top-10-list-prior-to-2011-where-are-they-now.html   - OF – Fernando Martinez: What can you say? This guy has not played a full season in his pro career, and because of that he has not been able to show his full potential. Minaya was able to keep him out of the Johan Santana trade because of his 5 tool potential. However, since that time has has been on the shelf as much as he has been on the field. Started 2011: Triple-A Currently: Triple-A

Zach Lutz:

8-14-11: - http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/mets/post/_/id/32042/projected-prospect-call-ups  - ZACH LUTZ, third baseman (.301, 6 HR, 17 RBI, 156 at-bats with Buffalo): A solid hitter whose father Yogi coached him at Alvernia College before Lutz was drafted in the fifth round in 2007, injuries have been Lutz’s biggest obstacle. Early in his pro career, Lutz dealt with stress fractures in his feet, which required surgery. This year, he originally landed on the disabled list with a right hamstring strain. And while on the DL, he was struck with a foul ball in the dugout, breaking the ring finger on his non-throwing hand. Lutz also has suffered a pair of concussions this season -- both the result of being hit in the head with pitches. Lutz, not a gifted fielder, also has been exposed to first base during his minor league career.

Julio Concepcion:

He leads the team in BA with a .317 (11th in the league), and also in Hits with 59 (5th in the league), and he’s 3rd on the team in TB’s (80), and in RBI’s (23). Signed by the Mets as an IFA in March of 2007, the RH hitting Concepcion, who is a very raw talent, has spent the last two seasons at the GCL level. A big finish to his season at Kingsport in 2011, is very important for him to use as a springboard to the long season leagues next year.

Logan Verrett:

8-17-11: - http://www.metstoday.com/6911/mets-minors/reviewing-the-mets-draft  - 3rd-round selection Logan Verrett out of Baylor signed at midnight for $425k. A college arm, Verrett is advanced enough to start out in High-A and could be on the same work plan that 2010 first-rounder Matt Harvey faced this season. Verrett sits at 88-92 mph with the fastball, but his best pitch is his slider. Expect to see him start in St. Lucie next season.

Drew Pomeranz:

8-18-11: - http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20110817&content_id=23369180&fext=.jsp&vkey=news_milb&tcid=tw_share  - Drew Pomeranz hadn't pitched in almost a month, but he looked anything but rusty on Wednesday night. MLB.com's No. 31 prospect retired the first 19 batters he faced in a Drillers uniform en route to a seven-inning, two-hit performance. Double-A Tulsa went on to blank Midland, 6-0, to snap a six-game losing streak. Pomeranz, who had not pitched since July 25, struck out four without issuing a walk in front of Rockies GM Dan O'Dowd.

Stock: - Michael Fulmer, Julio Concepcion, Randy Fontanez, Flabio Ortega, Charlie Thurber

8-8-11: - Stock Meh – SP Michael Fulmer – Fulmer started his first professional game today, ahd a no-hitter going, but didn’t get out of the first inning. No one slid into him or no hammy was pulled. Line: 0.2-IP, 0-H, 3-BB, 1-WR, 2-R, 1-ER, 13.50. We’ll write this one off as nerves and check back in five days from now.

8-8-11: - Stock Up – Randy Fontanez – The 2011 27th round draft pick continues to get his feet wet in Brooklyn. Today was his eight outing of the year and he went 4.2-IP, 7-H, 3-ER, 2-K, 0-BB. His seasonal ERA now is 2.88 and he’s proving out a good late pick in the draft.

8-8-11: - Stock Up – Flabio Ortega – It’s far too early to determine what the Mets have here, but closer Flabio Ortega threw his sixth save in 13 appearances, and now has an ERA of 0.59. That’s one earned run in 15.1-IP. Also has 22-K’s. Imagine what the New York press would do with that first name.

8-9-11: - Stock Up – Charlie Thurber - I mentioned earlier this season that Thurber might be the steal of the draft. The 6-4 21-year old was the 39th draft pick out of the University of Tennessee. Baseball America had him as the 191st high school player available and he had a horrible junior year, going .230/.304/.327/.631. This is what scouting is all about. Something was obviously wrong but was the player? Well, so far this season with Brooklyn: .282/.327/.359/.685.
