B-Mets Game Notes

LAST GAME:

Hits were finding holes everywhere Thursday for
Connecticut as they nickeled and dimed their way to 15 hits
and a 7-3 win over Binghamton. Starter Eric Brown went 5.1
innings giving up five runs and nine hits in his second start of
2009. The Defenders scored runs in four straight frames from
the third through the sixth, capping things with a four-spot in
that sixth inning to put the B-Mets in a 7-1 hole. Brad Boyer
led the way for Connecticut, going 4-5 at the plate with two
doubles and two RBI. Lucas Duda drove in two of Binghamton’s
three runs with a sacrifice fly in the sixth and a double in
the eighth. D.J. Wabick managed a multi-hit day for the third
straight game going 2-4 to raise his average to a seasonhigh
.298.

STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP:

RHP Tobi Stoner will make his
third start of the year for Binghamton since coming off the
disabled list May 11. Stoner was slowed by a right shoulder
strain coming out of Spring Training that held him out for over
a month. His last start came in Game 2 of the doubleheader
with Trenton May 17. He gave the B-Mets 5.1 innings giving
up three runs to take a no-decision. Stoner is 1-0 with a 1.46
ERA in 12.1 inning so far in 2009. Last season, Stoner made
15 starts with Binghamton, racking up a 4-6 record with a
4.33 ERA in 79 innings. He was the Mets’ 16th-round selection
in the 2006 draft out of Davis and Elkins College (WV).
RHP Cole DeVries will make his eighth start of the year for
New Britain, which has won an Eastern League-best five
straight games. Devries last started May 16 against Portland,
taking the loss after giving up 5 runs on 10 hits in 4.2 innings.
For the year, he is 2-3 with a 3.16 ERA in 37 innings of work.
DeVries finished third in the Florida State League in ERA
(2.93) with Fort Myers (High-A) last year. The 24-year old Minnesota
native was signed as a non-drafted free agent by the
Twins out of the University of Minnesota in 2006.


RETURN OF EVANS:

OF Nick Evans arrived in Binghamton
yesterday after spending a week at Extended Spring Training
in St. Lucie to remedy his early-season slump. He began the
season with Buffalo (AAA) and batted just .093 (7-75) with 3
HR and 7 RBIs in 22 games. He broke camp with New York
(NL), but was optioned to Buffalo (AAA) when Gary Sheffield
was signed by the Mets after his release from Detroit.


WABICK WEARING ‘EM OUT:

B-Mets outfielder D.J. Wabick has
been terrorizing Eastern League pitching as of late. He has
hits in his last seven games (11-25, .440), including three
straight multi-hit games. Through 11 games in 2009, Wabick
was hitting just .139, but has hit in 19 of his last 22 games
since April 28 (29-78, .372).
