New Met - 1B/3B - Mike Cervenak

Mike Cervenak:

The New York Mets signed 3B Mike Cervenak to a minor league contract.

5-11, 180 – 8-17-76 – R/R - Trenton, Michigan – Univ. of Michigan

Drafted in the 43rd round of the 1998 draft by Oakland.

Has played 447 games at 3B, 364 games at 1B, 117 games at SS, 30 games at 2B, and 21 games in the OF

Reached the majors as a 31 year old rookie.

Big contact hitter… no speed whatsoever

Played 2009 with Phillies at $400,000. Had 13 at bats in the bigs.

11 season minor league stats: .298/.345/.470/.815, in 4782-AB, 157-HR, 826-RBI

John Manuel: He's an organizational guy. Nicknamed the Mayor of Norwich now as he's been there for the last three years, two with the Yankees and one with S.F. He did have a nice college career at Michigan and was once in our Alaska League Top 10, but he's 27 and not going to make this Top 30.

Good hitter, doesn't strike out much and doesn't walk much. He hit .311 and .305 the last 2 seasons with the Lehigh Valley Ironpigs and is currently hitting .359 in the Mexican Winter League. He had his wrist broken by a Tommy Hanson fastball last May but was back in the Ironpigs lineup about 4 weeks later. He's a better hitter than anything the Buffalo Bisons put on the field last year and that's where he'll likely be playing in 2010.
