Jason Bay to the Yankees? Not so fast. Despite a published report linking the Yankees to Bay, it’s unlikely that the Bombers will join the Mets as serious bidders for the free-agent All-Star outfielder. According to a Yankees source, the club has no interest in signing Bay to a long-term deal, not wanting to commit more than $60 million to another outfielder. - Read more: NYDN

Hayden Beard is pitching for the South Australia Bite in the Claxton Shield event in Australia, where the Padres scouted him. International scouting director Randy Smith said Beard was touching 95 mph with his fastball and throwing a slider that crept into the mid-80s, so why not spend $4,000 for that? The Mets originally signed Beard in 2005 but put him on the suspended list after his 2006 season for violations of team policy, according to Smith. Between that and visa issues and other issues, the Mets never brought Beard back to the States, but the Padres plan to for 2010 to see what they’ve got. (John Manuel) - BA
Mack: The Mets were very high on Aussie high schoolers a few years ago and signed a handful of their best. So far, none have made headlines.
Jeff Francoeur won a gold glove in just his third season, at age 23, and has probably the best throwing arm in baseball. Yet, mostly due to the newfound popularity of MGL’s UZR stat, Francoeur’s defensive reputation among fans has suffered. Looking at his UZR numbers at fangraphs, it’s understandable why: his Range component has gradually declined, while his best year, 2007, features an Arm rating so high it can easily be written off as an outlier. Thus, many have concluded that Francoeur is declining as a fielder, and his best years were kind of fluky to begin with. For a super-athletic 25-year-old, however, such a decline is pretty unbelievable
Mack: Anyone out there... is Frenchy signed for 2010???
Taken in the first round of the 2007 Draft (No. 11 overall), the 20-year-old Aumont still had a tremendous amount of upside. The 6-foot-7 Canadian has a plus fastball he can throw in the mid-90s and complements it with an above-average breaking ball, a slider he throws in the low-80s that can be a plus pitch as well at times.
