The Mets signed two catchers today, Henry Blanco and Chris Coste to contracts that approximately call for $2,100,000 in the 2010 season.
These are two great moves... and, there's more coming.
For 2010, the Mets will use Blanco as the backup... for Benji Molina, who should be signed by this time next week.
The combination of Molina and Blanco, compare to Schneider, Santos, and Thole, are a huge upgrade... FOR ONE YEAR.
At the same time, Thole will do the lion share of the catching, while Coste works with the kids before the game, backs up Thole, and gives Buffalo a backup first baseman as well.
And is 2011, you have Thole, and Molina...
All for Schneider money.

you can't have a team with a sub-par minor league talent pool, use what's left to secure one top player in a trade...
the Mets are... as of today... committed to Thole, Fernando Martinez, and Ike Davis for 2011....
These will be your 2011 opening day catcher, left fielder, and first baseman.
The lion share of the rest of the money spent... THIS YEAR... will go to pitching...
Remember... whether you like it or not... this is now a marathon, not a sprint.
The projected 2011 lineup will be an infield of Davis, Castillo, Reyes, Wright, and Thole.
Your outfield is Frency, Beltran, and F-Mart.
The pitching is still to be determined.
And ALL of this just became easier after signing two pieces of the puzzle today.

Then what do you think will happen with Santos? Package him in a trade? Back to the minors? Carry 3 catchers?
Santos is probably the odd man out.
Don't know why, but obviously he wasn't in the long range plan.
He could wind up in Binghamton... if he accepts the 2 level demotion.
Look, Santos was a stop gap for a future Thole... and Blanco is a better Santos as a backup for this year... and... Molina is a better 1st stringer for 2010 than Santos...
was Santos screwed... you betcha...

Mack - why double Blanco's salary to back up Molina? Why even bring in Molina in the first place?
I understand the Coste move, and I even understand Blanco if he was only making as much as he did last year. I'm not broken up about Santos being the odd man out either. Bengie Molina, I simply do not understand.

The Mets had a big problem here.
There simply was no one in the market for 2010 other than Molina. Yes, he is old, but the Mets feel he is just fine for the year that Thole needs to mature.
The Mets don't look at the 1.5 for Blanco as an increase over what Schnieder would have cost the. Schneider never would have gotton the 4.9mil he had on paper, but he did wind up getting from the Phillies the same kind of money the Mets had to pay for Blanco.
The Phillies/Schneider deal set the table for backup catchers.
Yes, Molina is a one year stop gap, but that's exactly how the Mets have handled this.
There are much bigger fish to fry regarding FA dollars
Thole is still learning the catching position. You are sadly mistaken if you think Molina is going to sit idly by and back-up an inexperienced catcher when he will be in another walk year in 2011. If Molina signs for 2 years he will be the starter for two years. Unlike Schneider I don't see him being the mentor type.
