Zach Lutz roped three hits, including a double, but Portland proved too much for Binghamton, which fell 7-3 at Hadlock Field Monday night. The loss marks the third straight for the B-Mets. Starting right-hander Dylan Owen struggled with his command in taking the loss. He allowed five runs on five hits and issued a season-high six walks.
Binghamton (6-6) opened the game with a run in the first inning off Portland starter Felix Doubront. The lefty gave up a double to Luis Hernandez with one out and then with two down, allowed a single to Lutz that put the B-Mets out in front 1-0.
That proved to be Binghamton’s only lead of the game. The Sea Dogs fought back with two in the bottom of the inning off Owen. After a walk and a double, Luis Exposito brought a run home with a groundout to third. Then, with two outs, Lars Anderson dropped a single into center to push across a second run, making it 2-1.
Portland (6-5) took advantage of Owen’s control outage in the second, as the righty issued a pair of walks and hit a batter to load the bases opening the frame. With one out, Che-Hsuan Lin took a walk with the bases full to force a run in and Nate Spears followed with a sac fly to center to increase the lead to 4-1.
In the third, Anderson crushed an Owen offering over the wall in right for his third homer of the season, enlarging the lead to four runs.
The B-Mets found an answer in the fifth inning against Doubront. D.J. Wabick and Jonathan Malo reached on a single and a walk, respectively, to start the inning. Kirk Nieuwenhuis followed with an infield single to load the bases. Hernandez then grounded into a 4-6-3 double play bringing Wabick home. The scoring for Binghamton concluded with a Hector Pellot RBI single that brought Malo home, making it 5-3. The B-Mets would get no closer.
The Sea Dogs added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth courtesy of a Ryan Kalish two-run homer to right off reliever Edgar Ramirez.
Wabick enjoyed a 2-4 day with a run scored. The multi-hit day comes after the outfielder starter 1-18 at the plate.
Doubront scored the win for Portland, his second. He allowed three earned runs on six hits over five innings.
