Eight different Sand Gnats registered multi-hit games accounting for 18 hits in a 10-2 thrashing of the Charleston RiverDogs in front of 3,398 fans in South Atlantic League action at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park on Sunday evening.
With the win Savannah improves to 17-26, 59-54 overall. With the loss Charleston drops back-to-back games for the first time since July 23-24 and falls to 22-21, 53-59 overall.
The 18 hits given up by Charleston tied the club’s season-high for hits allowed, having previously surrendered 18 hits to Rome on May 19.
Savannah loaded the bases with no one out in the first and scored twice in the frame against Mike Solbach on R.J. Harris’ bases-loaded two-run single Matt Den Dekker and Robbie Shields for a 2-0 cushion.
Luke Murton’s RBI single scored J.R. Murphy from second, cutting the Savannah lead to 2-1 in the bottom half. Murphy singled and moved into scoring position on a Sand Gnats error.
Charleston would not score again versus starter Taylor Whitenton (6-6), who surrendered the unearned tally on four hits in 5.1 innings while sinking seven.
A three-run, four-hit top of the second bumped the lead to 5-1. Den Dekker – who was added to Savannah’s roster earlier in the day, knocked his second single of the night to score James Schroeder for a 3-1 lead.
Shields’ RBI groundout made the score 4-1, while two two-out wild pitches from Solbach allowed Den Dekker to move to third and ultimately home, pushing the Savannah lead to 5-1 going into the bottom of the second inning.
Solbach (2-4) takes the loss for Charleston after giving up eight hits and five earned runs, with five strikeouts, in 4.0 innings of work.
Three straight hit started the fifth punctuated by a RBI double from Juan Torres, scoring Travis Ozga from second, boosting the Savannah lead to 6-1.
Wilfredo Tovar drove home the other two runners with a double to left-centerfield to give the Sand Gnats an 8-1 advantage.
Schroeder’s poked sacrifice fly to plate Ozga in the sixth increasing the margin to 9-1 going into the bottom of the sixth.
Cesar Puello added an RBI single to give the Sand Gnats a 10-1 advantage in the seventh.
In the bottom of the ninth, Neil Medchill sent a 1-0 pitch from Savannah reliever Gabriel Zavala deep over the right field wall for his sixth home run of the year. It was just the second earned run that Zavala had allowed all year in 25.0 relief innings,
All nine Savannah starters had hits, led by Tovar’s 3-for-5, two RBI evening. Medchill had the only multi-hit game for Charleston going 2-for-3, as the team posted just five hits.
