Nick Evans, Lucas Duda, Jason Bay, PG on Mets Draft, MDM on Mets Draft

As we all know, Nick Evans has been designated for assignment again to make room for Lucas Duda. I’m taking him off the Keepers list because he simply isn’t a prospect anymore. He’s 26-years old and has had four opportunities to impress someone in Queens. His total MLB stats are: 210-AB, 4-HR, 21-RBI, .58-K, 247/.301/.393/.694. It’s not like anyone is pushing him, but he still simply hasn’t produced at the majors. I expect him to pass through waivers and return to Buffalo, but, if I was the Mets, I wouldn’t let the possible growth of Alan Dykstra stand in the way here. Dykstra looks like the perfect fit for AAA next season and, hopefully, Nick can find work elsewhere. He’s a great kid and deserves a clean slate with another team.

Lucas Duda was recalled this morning and will join the team in Pittsburgh. He has hit five home runs in his past 10 games and there is currently no one better in the system to play first base until Ike Davis returns. Dudad is a legitimate power bat, and boy, do the Mets need him right now. Hopefully, the Mets will play the kid every day so he can get past the gitters, let Ruben Tejada play every day at second base, and let Daniel Murphy play every day at third. We have to see what these guys can do on a day to day basis.

I really don’t know what to do with Jason Bay. I know you can’t work your way out of a slump sitting on the bench, but is this really a slump. He has basically sucked since day one of the trade. Adam Rubin posted a sickening stat earlier today. Assuming neither contract’s options kick in, the Mets will pay Bay and Johan Santana a combination of $50mil in 2013. That’s $7mil less than the entire Marlins payroll.

http://www.perfectgame.org/Articles/View.aspx?article=5864 had their take on the Mets draft this morning: “Similar to the cross-town Yankees, the Mets typically take a conservative approach to the draft, and while Nimmo is an exciting potential five-tool talent, most considered him to be somewhat of a reach for the middle of the first round. After Nimmo the Mets loaded up on pitching, taking seven arms among their picks in the top 10 rounds. Michael Fulmer gave Oklahoma a third power righty from the prep class to go along with Dylan Bundy and Archie Bradley, and the Mets plucked him up in the sandwich round. NC State's Cory Mazzoni (second-round) has a similar power profile to Fulmer. Left-hander Jack Leathersich (fifth) can approach the mid-90s. College right-handers Logan Verrett (third)and Tyler Pill (fourth), as well as left-hander Alex Panteliodis (ninth), are known more for their command of solid three-pitch arsenals than their raw stuff.”

http://www.mockdraftmania.com had their take on the Mets draft:

“The Mets had the worst draft enough said. I’m not going to bash the other teams because the Mets clearly reached for Nimmo and their other draft picks were reaches in round 2 also.”

Too bad all these "experts" aren't running the Mets. Clearly, if they were the Mets would have won the last 10 World Series in a row. Obviously they have a crystal ball that allows them to see that Brandon Nimmo and Michael Fullmer are going to be total busts and that Jed Bradley is the 2nd coming of Sandy Koufax and will win the ROY, CY Young, and MVP of the NL in 2012 with the Brewers. I love these "experts" who know so much more than the professionals who run MLB franchises and actually have a stake in the success or failure of their picks. It must be so nice to be so much smarter than pro scouts, scouting directors, and GM's.

I didnt make that first post, but Im Charley T, and I totally agree with Mr. Anonymous. Rarely does any player drafted have any effect for the mothership the same year they're drafted. How about the following year? Nope. Year after that maybe? Not typically, no. The fourth year? Now you're getting there. Stephen Strasburg wasnt even drafted out of high school, and 3 yrs later he's the best prospect in fifty yrs. NO ONE KNOWS what's gunna come of this draft. Let alone some geeks who actually get paid to give opinions when they've never worked in player development, are not major league scouts, and sure as shit ain't Mack Ade.

Charlie:

Your point about Strasburg sums up the Met draft this year.

There isn't a single player on this draft that I could comfortably project as a major league player by the 2014 season.

That's simply not a decent mix.

I've had four of the high school kids already link up with me via emails, and they wouldn't do that unless they plan on signing. I'm not going to release their names until they do sign, but you'll be happy.

Still, what's wrong with a Matt Barnes or Jed Bradley to lead off the draft? Both will be ready by mid-season 2013 and both are proven talents.

Your right, your right. I understand the arms are hard top pass up, I know. I just look at the mets minors and see some good pitchers. Last years draft seemed ripe for us so far with the college arms. I also see Flores, totally not living up to the hype. Kirk N is just so so and he's one of their better offensive prospects. Duda done nothin whenever hes called up. Vaughn is light years away. Den Dekker, Ceciliani, Lagarus, Vadlespin, Dykstra, Zapata are on no ones radar except you and me, and we're not impressed. Satin has great numbers for a 21 year old, but hes 26. Havens is one oblique injury away from demanding a total rib removal surgury. He won't see the majors until hes 26 or 27. Reyes who is great is most likely a goner. David peaked in 2006, and had never been the same or as clutch. Beltran is a goner next year. Bay is the 2011 version of Rey Ordonez. Pagans is good, not a star. Same for Murphy. Same for Tejada. Davis is the future. This team, because it will not spend freely like in the past, and is going to lose major pieces after this year, and because their ace pitcher Santana might end up like Chris Young, Chin Men Wang, or Mark Prior due to shoulder issues, is not going to compete for the next few years. They will, in all likelihood, not compete in the coming years and have plenty of opportunity via the draft to take stud pitching in the great round. Probably with lower picks then this years thirteen. So since we must wait for this team to compete at a high level, we should probably be thankful they grabbed a kid this good. Hopefully, he'll be called up when all of our pitching prospects are done with their major league growing pains and are a dominating group. Right when Davis is peaking and Wright hopefully had some pop left. Charley T

Charlie, I love ya, but if you think Vaughn is light years away, I can't even imagine when Nimmo would be ready.

The Phillies and Giants continue to prove what everyone knows for decades... build your rotation and games will be won.

Look, you want to draft a bat first? Fine... then draft either Blake Swihart, Jason Esposito, Harold Martinez, Mikie Mahtook, Josh Bell, Travis Harrison... give me someone that could get to Queens before I die.

You must be pretty old ha? okay I give up. We should have drafted Barnes. But philly won there World Series cause of one pitcher named Cole, another named Brad who was perfect in saves, and a sumpremely superior offense that never, ever, ever gave up, which had Howard and Utley as their anchor. It wasnt some unbelievable pitching staff that was historic like the one they have now. Ill give you a complete correct with San Fran's trophy run though. Im just saying that we have some pitching chips in the minutes. Not alot, but some. Vaughn, it's in low A ball, and you always say that you can't project much from kids in low A. They must get to AA, and then pass AA before you know whatcha got. So while were uncompetitive, and it looks like we will be, lets be happy about the bat we got. Should we have taken another? Who knows. Ryan Howard was a fifth rounder so you really never know. Lets just wait and see.. My disapproval comes from some guy saying we had the worst draft, just three days after it. Thats just ridiculous. That statment shouldn't be made for at least two or three years. Ever hear about the Zen Master? You have to wait and see.
