According to Ken Rosenthal and Matt Gelb via Twitter, the Philadelphia Phillies have re-signed C Carlos Ruiz to a 3 year deal worth $26MM (AAV: $8.5M). Included in the deal is a 4th year option for $4.5M or a $500k buyout plus a limited no trade clause.
Performances incentives are also included in the deal. Ruiz can earn an additional $500k each season if he appears in 125 games or more.
(Another classic overpay by the Phillies. The next closest reported offer for Chooch was 2 yr/$15M total [AAV: $7.5M] by the Colorado Rockies. Outside of his "adderall" usage year in 2012 where he hit 16 HR, Ruiz has never hit more than 9 in a season. While he hits for a nice average [career .274] Ruiz has had trouble staying healthy over the past two seasons and turns 35 next year at a position that generally rapidly declines with age. Think about that 35 yrs old and they just gave him 3 years guaranteed plus a possible 4th year.)
