Cal-State Fullerton - Chapman is not your protoypical 3B at 6'1", 195 lbs
but he has a compact athletic build and an all fields line-drive approach at
the plate. There wasn't a lot of loft to
his swing and that, combined with his modest size, leads me to think he isn't
going to hit for a lot of power. He was
very good at 3B, showing good lateral movement to both sides, including a
tremendous diving play to his left. I
wonder if perhaps he can change positions.
SS may be a stretch but he looked quick and athletic enough to maybe try

Cal State Fullerton - The 6’-2”, 200-pound right-hander has a plus arm and
enough range to stick at the hot corner. Whether or not the power will show up
to remain there is up for debate. He does show an advanced approach at the
plate, having drawn 34 walks to 29 strikeouts over 55 games as a sophomore. I
got to see him play with The Collegiate National Team and really liked his

as corner-infielders with pitching as a fallback option, but Chapman is much

11-22-13 - We continue the countdown today with number 65, Cal State
Fullerton infielder Matt Chapman. In his sophomore season with the Titans,
Chapman started in 53 games at third base. During the 2013 season the infielder
batted .285 with 53 hits, 41 runs scored and 37 RBI. His success on the diamond
got Chapman named to the Fullerton All-Regional Team as well as the Big West
Conference Second Team. The 6’2” third baseman was a permanent fixture in the
three spot for the Titans due to his raw power and confidence at the plate. The
Victorville, CA native attended El Toro High School where he was a three-year
letterwinner for the Chargers. The two-time South Coast League honoree hit .422
with 39 hits as a senior and was named MVP as well as earned All-CIF First Team

Fullerton loves them some 2-way players. Chapman is the second Fullerton player
in as many drafts who have an unclear path to the majors. Much like last year
with Michael Lorenzen (eventually drafted as a P) he will have to show where he
fits this spring. He has not seen as much time on the mound but it is easy to
see where the love is for him as a pitcher when you see him rifle a throw
across the diamond. The hit tool is good and he shows solid plate awareness but
the game power just hasn’t been consistent. Scouts will like the arm though and
appreciate the fact that it has very little wear in terms of innings pitched.

the hot corner. Whether or not the power will show up and remain there is up
for debate. He does show an advanced approach at the plate, having drawn 34
walks to 29 strikeouts over 55 games as a sophomore. I got to see him play with
The Collegiate National Team and really liked his line-drive swing. He wound up
leading Team USA in RBI with 20 over 23 games and drew 14 walks for a .396 OBP.
