Just a few days after word that talks between the Indians and free-agent-to-be Justin Masterson have broken down, there may be another upper tier arm projected to reach free agency after this season. And, outside of Clayton Kershaw, it’s the biggest would-be free agent.
The Tigers have taken the surprising step of today announcing – announcing – that Max Scherzer has rejected their latest extension offer, and there will be no further negotiations until the offseason. That means that Scherzer will reach free agency, joining a starting pitching class that could also include Masterson, James Shields, Jon Lester, and Kenta Maeda (if he’s posted), among others. Perhaps we’re now seeing a shift back in the other direction after so many extensions were inked earlier in the year.
Can you imagine if Fred Wilpon and Sandy Alderson used this opportunity to crawl out of their financial cave?

Every other pitcher in the organization who isn't part of the bullpen becomes fodder to trade to fill out a WS contending lineup.
I've always liked Lester's work in the postseason.

With a 2015 potential rotation of the best 5 of Harvey, Wheeler, Syndergaard, Niese, Colon, Montero, Gee, Mejia, deGrom, and with Matz, Fulmer, Ynoa, Lara, Mateo, Whalen, Flexen, Gsellman, Gant, etc. etc standing in line, do you really think the Wilpons/Alderson should pony up $200+ million for a starter? Even one as talented as Scherzer or Lester? I think their resources are better used investing in extensions to core players and in trading for outstanding offensive players with hefty contracts.

And, I could use an owner that supports those feelings.

No problem with adding a player or two from outside the organization that costs real money.
Imagine going into a trade negotiation for a superstar hitter and say "Here's Gee, Mejia, Montero, Matz, Puello, Plawecki, and Flores. Take your time and let us know which ones you like best."
In many ways it makes sense to add one of these guys both to bring some veteran experience to the rotation and free up some of the arms to trade for hitting because outside of SS the FA market for bats is terrible next year. I think BOS will extend Lester though.
It surprises me that there are readers here that don't want thi team to have the best rotation that (someone else's) money can buy
