Opening day at Citi Field, Ian Desmond broke a 5 all tie in
the top of the 10th inning on a sac-fly to center and Anthony Rendon
followed with a 3 run homer as the Nationals scored 4 runs in the top of the 10th
as they down the Mets in their home and season opener 9-7. The Mets got off to
a fast start with some first inning thunder when Andrew Brown starting in left
for an ailing Chris Young clubbed a 3 run homer off
Stephen Strausburg. Dillon Gee started
for the Mets. The Mets got to Strausburg early. In the first Legares singled
and advanced to third on a David Wright single, then Brown, launched a bomb
into the left field stands to start the 2014 season with a bang. In the top of the 2nd Adam LaRoche
crushed a two run homer that landed near the Shea Bridge to make it 3-2. Eric Young Jr. had a sac fly in the bottom of
the 3rd scoring Travis d’Arnaud to make it 4-2 Mets. After the
LaRoche homer, Gee dominated, retiring the next 15 Nationals until Bryce Harper
reached on an infield hit in the 7th. But then Gee tired. With 2 out and 2 on Gee
yielded an opposite field double to Anthony Rendon to make it 4-3. Carlos Torres came on in relief and walked Nate
Mclouth to load the bases, Terry Collins immediately brought in Scott Rice to
face Denard Span. Rice walked Span on 4 pitches to tie the game at 4. New Met
Jose Valverde came in struck out Ryan Zimmerman on a 3-2 pitch with the bases
juiced to end the threat. Valverde stood out in his Met debut, facing 4
Nationals, retiring them all and striking out 3. Juan Lagares led off the
bottom of the 8 th inning with a solo home run off Tyler Clippard giving
the Mets a brief 5-4 lead, which Bobby Parnell yielded in the top of the 9th
blowing his first save opportunity of the year. In the top of the 10th
. Familia got hammered giving up all 2 runs in the 10th as did John Lannon. Familia gets the loss falling to 0-1.
Rookie Aaron Barrett picks up his 1st ML win. Gee in getting the no decision
went 6 2/3, he allowed just 4 hits, 3 runs he walked 2 and struck out 5. While the Mets got to Strasburg early, but
after the 2nd inning he found his stuff and went on to go 6, he
allowed 5 hits all 4 runs he walked 2
and struck out 10 also earning a no decision. Legares went 2 for 5 with the
homer and an rbi and two walks, David Wright went 3 for 5 with a homer and two rbi. Wright
homered in the bottom of the 10th to make the game close. The Amazins

You left out not-so-Granderson...0 for 5, 3 Ks...including spring, now 5 for last 49 with 3 walks and 18 Ks. Not to worry, unlike Cabrera he is only under contract for 4 years. Like Bay was.
Wouldn't say Familia was hammered. Lazy fly ball that fell in for a hit, broken bat single, passed ball, nasty slider to K Harper and a soft opposite field single.
Lets all pretend that wednesday is opening day, shall we?

Fair enough Matt....I wrote that mistakenly thinking Familia gave up the dinger....my bad.
When does the Arizona Fall League begin?
Loved the sign in the outfield "90 wins to go"
Still holds. Parnell walked the PH Danny Espinoza. Come on now- go after that guy. Frustrating loss.
How many days till Thor, Montero and Puello arrive again?
On another note, I see we signed Abreu. Who's next Rickey? I guess you can't put a price on veteran leadership or immobile outfielders well past their sell-by date. Just take a wild guess who his first big-league manager was?
for a team that talks about better at bats and higher on base % , we strike out way to much. In 2013 , the mets struck out 1300 times and I think it will be higher this year.
Charlie, they signed the strikeout king, Curtis Granderson, for 4 years...and high K guys get worse as they age in that regard. Get used to it.
I'd rather they saved the $$ they spen on Grandy, put Dekker and Campbell in Grandy's spot at least until Puello was ready, and used the $$ to sign a legit shortstop (I just Drew a blank on whom) and a lethal bullpen guy.
We'd have been much better off - just watch Grandy over the next 4 years...I hope I eat my words
I was at the game. Granderson also hit a rocket to the warning track in dead center. Tough break.
And it doesn't go unnoticed to me that DW had a great day at the plate with Curtis hitting behind him.
