2015 Draft Profile - RHP - Carson Fulmer - Vanderbilt - UPDATED 8-14-14

8-14-14 - 2. Carson Fulmer, RHP (Vanderbilt, Jr.). Part of Vanderbilt's CWS championship team, he transitioned from closer to starter at midseason. Fulmer has more electric stuff than Funkhouser, with a 93-97 mph fastball and a more dynamic breaking ball, and his changeup isn't bad either. Fulmer was the hardest pitcher to hit on Team USA, limiting opponents to a .141 average with one extra-base hit in 24 2/3 innings, and he led the staff with three wins and a 0.73 ERA. But he ranks behind Funkhouser as a prospect because he's smaller (5-foot-11, 195 pounds), features a lot more effort in his delivery and doesn't throw as many strikes, factors that could lead him to switch back to closing games in the long run.
"With his mound presence and stuff, he's got a chance to be a front-line closer in the big leagues," said Texas A&M head coach/Team USA pitching coach Rob Childress. "I'm not saying he can't start, but his presence within the team is special, and it's not just mound presence. To have that one or two times a week as a starter isn't as special as having it four or five times a week as a closer."  http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/mlb/kyle-funkhouser-leads-list-of-top-prospects-on-team-usa?ymd=20140814&content_id=89585038&vkey=news_mlb

7-10-14 - B/R - 10. Colorado Rockies Select Vanderbilt RHP Carson Fulmer - There's a stigma against right-handed pitchers who are under 6'2", so Vanderbilt's Carson Fulmer has his work cut out for him to prove scouts wrong at 5'11". The good news is he's got the weapons in his arm to quiet any doubts. Fulmer has a plus fastball that sits in the low 90s with late, explosive life. He complements it nicely with a big, powerful 12-to-6 curveball that is going to make a number of professional hitters flinch because it's got such tight snap. Even though he's primarily pitched out of the bullpen at Vandy, Fulmer has the arsenal to pitch in a starting rotation. There's some effort in his mechanics as he tends to short arm the ball, which also hurts the command, but he's athletic and repeats everything so well that it just takes a quick fix to take stress off the shoulder. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2085268-mlb-mock-draft-2015-brs-official-early-predictions-for-next-years-top-10/page/2

7-27-14 - PINAR DEL RIO, Cuba - The USA Baseball Collegiate National Team dropped both ends of a doubleheader against Cuba on Saturday, falling 2-1 in the first game and 7-3 in the second at Capitán San Luis Stadium.Carson Fulmer (Vanderbilt) suffered the loss for the U.S. despite pitching six quality innings in which he allowed just two runs - one earned - on five hits while striking out three. Tyler Jay (Illinois) finished off the game with three scoreless stanzas, yielding just one hit.

6-30-14 – Through The Fence – Early College Prospects - 9. Carson Fulmer, RHP, Vanderbilt - After being the closer for the first year and a half of his career at Vanderbilt, Fulmer made a smooth transition into the starting rotation. Over 10 starts, he posted a 2.00 ERA, 1.18 WHIP with 57 K/28 BB over 63 innings, holding opponents to a .192 BAA. He can dial up his fastball to 98 mph, and he adds a power slider that shows plus. His change-up is still developing and he has good command of his stuff despite the high walk totals as he is still getting used to the starter role. Like Brandon Finnegan this year, Fulmer will raise questions about his size (5’-11”, 195 pounds) next year and many will question his ability to remain a starter. He has effort to his delivery but tones it down a bit when starting. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2015-mlb-draft-early-30-college-prospects/43327

6-16-14  -   Jun 16
By the way, how does that rotation for 2015 look right now? Carson Fulmer, Walker Buehler, Tyler Ferguson. (gulp)

6-4-14  -  Mack  -  We seem to always be talking about Vanderbilt pitching.

Next one up is 6-0 RHP Carson Fulmer, who is a converted reliever. No one likes a starter under 6-2 but they probably will learn to live with his fastball that has been clocked up to 98 this season. And thgat's not even his best pitch (slider). We'll follow him through the NCAA tourney and will post up his 2014 stats as soon as the season ends.
