| The Cubs dugout get an unwelcome visitor during Mets 7-1 win |
This is the famous “black cat” game. Tom Seaver would win
for the 21st time and New York would trail by just a ½ game, a mere
.002 points away from 1st place at game’s end. Ferguson Jenkins,
looking for his 20th win, started for Chicago but the Mets jumped on
him for two runs in their half of the 1st. Tommie Agee led off with
a walk, then after a Wayne Garrett line-out, Cleon Jones walked as well. Two
batters later Ken Boswell stroked a two run double to LF, putting them up 2-0.
Seaver had retired nine straight when New York padded their lead for him in the
3rd on Donn Clendenon’s two run shot, the slugger’s 13th
roundripper of the season. Up 4-0, Seaver lost his shutout after giving up an
RBI single to 3B Ron Santo. The Mets added more runs when Art Shamsky’s 13th homer
led off the 5th and in the 7th Jerry Grote doubled home
Boswell with the seventh and final run of the night. Seaver went all the way in
this one-scattering five hits while striking out five.
New York (82-57) swept
the Cubs (84-58) in this crucial two game series. Next up a twinbill with the
expansion Montreal Expos.
