The 31 year-old outfielder joined the organization as a minor leaguer in 2002 when Omar Minaya, then the general manager of the Expos, traded the Class A pull hitter to New York, who shipped him four months later to San Diego as part of an undistinguished deal.

San Diego is a new baseball powerhouse. Boy, were they overdue. Good for them?

Now, will the Mets get bolder? They need to.

I was thinking that there would be a big free agent signing before the end of the year for tax reasons, looks like that won't happen. That means that we won't probably see anything until mid-late January with the 2nd tier free agents signing before Spring Training - which get pushed back.

How are taxes a factor?

John From Albany said...

Bill - I was thinking if a player signs now with a bonus, they could take less next year and hence pay less taxes should they go up next year. David Cone did that when he signed with the Royals. Hasn't made a difference the last few years as the big signings have come in January.
