Good
Morning. Born Today Darryl
Hamilton. Happy Birthday Wayne
Garrett and Matt
Reynolds. Mets keep Steven Matz and Robert Gsellman while non-tendering 4

NY
Post: Mets reach one-year, $5.2 million deal with Steven Matz.
Mets Junkies:
However, there are reasons to keep the lefty [Matz] as he was solid in
2018/2019. Plus pitchers like [Robbie] Ray
are getting $8M, making Matz $5.1M a cheaper option. Important to note that
Matz can still be released before March 17th. This will mean the Mets will owe
him just $816k. So this move does make a lot of sense.
Mets.com: Matz
agrees to deal; Gsellman tendered. “The team also agreed to a deal with
outfielder Guillermo Heredia to avoid arbitration.”
MLB
Trade Rumors: Outfielder Guillermo Heredia, whom the Mets claimed from
Pittsburgh in August, will earn $1MM in 2021.
Mets
Daddy: Mets Keeping Robert Gsellman Extremely Smart Move. “With Gsellman
having two options remaining, he is perfectly suited to provide that to the
team. Robert Gsellman can be Syracuse’s Opening Day
starter, and he can show the Mets how he may be better suited to the rotation.”
Deesha
Thosar NY Daily News: The Mets non-tendered four players on Wednesday’s
deadline, including [LHP] Chasen Shreve…pitchers Ariel
Jurado, Paul Sewald and Nick
Tropeano.
MLB
Trade Rumors: “Shreve performed reasonably well in 2020, logging a 3.96
ERA/3.99 FIP with 12.24 K/9 and 4.32 BB/9 in 25 innings, but the Mets will
nonetheless move on instead of paying him around $1MM in arbitration”.

Or: Why keeping Matz and Gsellman makes sense, the most interesting non-tenders elsewhere who might fit (h/t the team's owner), and where the Mets' roster and payroll stand at the moment: https://t.co/jyI2npL3VG https://t.co/r8FxJUGzRv
— Tim Britton (@TimBritton) December 3, 2020
I’m not surprised. I didn’t think they should have tendered Matz or Gsellman, but the salaries aren’t guaranteed either. And for now, it’s depth at a minimum, and I suppose either couldn’t be worse than they were in 2021, if you want me to put a positive spin on it. https://t.co/salHMKiPkM

FanGraphs:
Mets Make Trevor May Their First Major Offseason Addition. “May
ranked 21st on Craig Edwards’ Top 50 Free Agents list at the beginning of the
winter, the second reliever listed behind ex-A’s closer Liam Hendriks, and
ahead of big names such as Brad Hand,
Blake
Treinen and Kirby Yates…the
ranking isn’t so much a reflection of May’s past as it is the potential teams
see in him.”
CBS
Sports: Samson: Is Mets' deal with Trevor May a sign of things to come in Steve
Cohen era? "What Steve Cohen came in and said: 'Man, our bullpen blew
all those saves. We couldn't count on the back end of our bullpen. Let's do
something about that. It's only $7 million a year. I know our fans want J.T. Realmuto, George Springer, and Trevor Bauer. But let's show them that we are a
front office that understands what it means to be a winner. It's not sexy but
it's going to lead to wins."

MetsJunkies did
an interesting comparison of James McCann to.
Realmuto comes on top in just about every category except perhaps projected
contract – McCann – 2 years $20M total.
Realmuto – 5 years $125M total.
Here's my creation to fix that! ;) pic.twitter.com/to83Td6n4U

MLB Trade Rumors: The Dodgers announced that they’ve acquired right-hander Corey Knebel from the Brewers in exchange for a player to be named later or cash.
The fact that there is no MLB-MLBPA agreement on the universal DH for 2021 completely undercuts the large group of corner OF/DH/corner slugger types among the free agents. An already bad situation for those players made worse.

1969 |
The Mets, in one of the worst trades in franchise history,
deal outfielder Amos Otis to the Royals for third baseman Joe Foy. The 22
year-old flycatcher will go on to have an outstanding 14-year career with
Kansas City and will become a member of the team's hall of fame, while Foy
will play just one season in New York, hitting a meager .236 in 99 games. |
1974 |
In a six-player deal, the Mets trade reliever Tug McGraw
to the Phillies along with outfielders Don Hahn and Dave Schneck in exchange
for outfielder Del Unser, pitcher Mac Scarce, and catcher John Stearns. The
'Ya Gotta Believe' closer will quickly become a fan-favorite in Philadelphia,
helping the team in 1980 to win their first world championship in the 97-year
history of the franchise. |
2018 |
The Mariners deal All-star second baseman Robinson Cano,
Edwin Diaz, last season's major league leader in saves, and cash to the Mets
for Gerson Bautista, Jay Bruce, Justin Dunn, Anthony Swarzak and minor
leaguer Jarred Kelenic. The trade doesn't fix New York's need to bolster
their flailing bullpen when their new closer loses his role, finishing the
season with 26 saves and seven blown opportunities. |

How did Cincinnati cut Archie Bradley?
That is an interesting comparison of Realmuto and McCann by the MetsJunkies site.
If this were the beginning of 2019, I wouldn't even be thinking about McCann, but for whatever reason, he came to life in the last couple years. I will try to do the same comparison of the two for just 2019 and 2020 and see what it looks like. There is no question Realmuto is the better catcher/athlete, but is he a 3 to 5 times better value?
69 - I am not sure if he is 3 - 5 times better. Will Realmuto be a "sunk" cost in 3 years? At least it will coincide with Cano coming off the books. The thing that surprised me is that their catcher's era is about average for both of them. Nido's is far better - another reason why I like him. Got to watch Nido up close in Binghamton. Liked him as a catcher ever since.
Gus - I guess the choice was between Raisel Iglesias and his $9.125M salary and Bradley and his $4.1M salary. The rumor was that the Reds were going to trade Iglesias but I guess they couldn't get what they wanted.
Now very anxious to see what lefty the Mets sign for pen.
John, Nido missed a real opportunity to shine in 2019 and 2020. I wonder how much of a role he'll have in 2021.
Ernest, I am a lefty and I am willing to settle for a 1 year deal with incentives. Age discrimination is against the law, so I expect them to find me a spot on the opening day roster :)
