John From Albany - Mets News and Breakfast Links 2/20/2021

Good Morning. Happy Birthday Phil Lombardi, Shane Spencer, and Livan Hernandez. The Mets get Taijuan Walker, Jacob deGrom talks about staying long term, and it’s Noah Vs. Trevor Bauer on Twitter.

Mets Links:

As we had yesterday on Mack’s Mets - Mets have deal with RHP Taijuan Walker.

SNY.TV: Luis Rojas discusses Taijuan Walker: 'He turns the rotation into a deep rotation'.

Brian Joura Mets360: “Walker has a full repertoire, with his main pitch being a 93.2 mph fastball. His main offspeed pitch is a slider but he also features a splitter and a curve.” (Subscription required).

Metstradamus: “Walker split the season between Seattle and Toronto. Had a 4.00 ERA with Seattle, and a 1.73 ERA with Toronto. But his WHIP was significantly better in Seattle in 2020: 1.07 to 1.25. So all that proves is that baseball is weird.”

Mike Puma NY Post: “Walker…finished 4-3 with a 2.70 ERA and 1.163 WHIP in 11 starts”.

SNY.TV: Taijuan Walker celebrates new Mets' deal with perfect nod to Tom Seaver.

NY Post: Trevor Bauer, Noah Syndergaard get into heated Twitter spat: ‘See you at the bottom’.

Mets.com: deGrom a Mets lifer? He likes the idea.

Nathalie Alonso Mets.com: How Lindor's defense could transform Mets: “A two-time Gold Glove Award winner with the range and instincts to make highlight-reel plays on a regular basis, Lindor has 46 career DRS at shortstop since debuting with Cleveland in June 2015. His 42 DRS since '16 rank fourth among MLB shortstops in that span. (The Mets rank last in that stretch with a collective minus-69 DRS at shortstop.)

Joel Sherman NY Post: Steve Cohen’s Mets are still taking the upside route.  “Imagine on Nov. 10 – the day of Cohen’s introductory press conference that so stirred the optimism of Mets fans – you would have been told the Mets will be signing none (ZERO) of the top six free agents this offseason. That would have felt impossible, right?”

Toolshed: 2021 Minor League schedule quirks For example: “Binghamton and Somerset -- affiliates of the two New York clubs in the Double-A Northeast Northeast Division -- won't face each other for a single six-game series...The list goes on. Some parts of the schedule are necessarily wacky to fit the new guidelines, and that means it won't be until 2022 when certain teams can face clubs from their own divisions again.”

Bauer is addicted to Twitter. Noah dug him real good.

That was a really funny video on the unusual baseball stuff we find so extraordinary.

Conner O'Neil looking good - I think he had his TJS two weeks before Syndergaard. So he ought to be ready for AA ball about when it starts in May.

I say that link on Fielder III power. It had a video of Cecil hitting one over the roof - that was mammoth. There's got to be a lot of African Americans who are not pursuing baseball who, if the pursued it like Cecil and Prince, would be really wealthy, great players today.

Tom,

For a multitude of reasons, Baseball has lost much of Black America. The RBI program has helped a lot but more can be done. Dom Smith and the Players Alliance are doing a lot to help as well. The 60's might just be the greatest period of baseball when we had such great players as Willie Mays, Lou Brock, Bob Gibson, Willie McCovey, Ernie Banks, and many more.

I'm obviously a huge Conner o'Neil fan and friend. His Low A numbers were really good. He of course now in hindsight realizes he pitched injured in Lucie. Cant wait to see him back healthy and have his chance just like anyone else.

John, NBA and to a lesser extent NFL and college sports on TV for those two sports likely pulled blacks away from considering baseball. Many would-have-been baseball millionaires focused instead on hoops where you might be immensely talented - but not good enough to crack the roughly 500 who play in the NBA - and earned nothing playing hoops. I am betting many would have a higher success rate in baseball. Sometimes, when I watch the NCAA tournament of 64, I marvel at the athleticism - but almost all of them will not play pro hoops. Sad.

Ernest, let's hope Conner rocks 2021.

Two things:
- Walker should alot of class but also a knowledge of the history of the Mets with that picture. How many players know baseball history?
- I was disappointed to see Syndergaard’s comment about the man’s wife. How much of a dick does he have to be? Say ‘don’t be jealous’ and leave it at that. To me he’s an immature jock and he appears happy with that. Not just from yesterday, but other retorts of his.
