MLB Trade Rumors: Mets, Caleb Joseph Agree To Deal…a split contract and 40 man roster spot - “Clearly, Joseph has never been a huge threat at the plate, but he’s thwarted 31 percent of stolen-base attempts against him over parts of seven big league seasons and is generally regarded as above-average with regard to pitch framing.”

NY Post: Mets have prospect Matt Allan learning from Jacob deGrom.

Mike Lupica Mets.com: Alonso is the one to watch in New York. “’You wait and see how he’s going to get after it,’ Dennis Braun, Alonso’s coach at Plant High in Tampa, Fla., told me [Lupica] the other day. ‘I watched him work out. Trust me when I tell you he is literally going to throw himself into this season.’”

NY Post: Mets’ Brandon Nimmo aiming to hold onto center field spot.

Great vibes from camp. I'm excited, how about you?

Teufel showing some Wilmer Reyes love. And love for 5-6 other prospects, too.

Defense is one thing a guy can improve on if he is healthy. I expect better defense from JD, Dom, and Brandon. Why? Because they know they have to get better at it, and worked on it.

Caleb Joseph sounds like he could be the next Taylor Teagarden. One hit in eight at bats in 2020, and it was a homer.

Bob - Great job pulling out the Taylor Teagarden reference! I hope Caleb is a little better. Make thinks Mazeika could be on the bubble when Joseph is added to the roster. I hope not. I like Mazeika a lot and think he fits in well as a #3 catcher and lefty power bat off the bench. Would much rather have Patty Maz than a 13th pitcher - ay ay ay.

Tom - I agree. Great clip from Teufel. Wilmer's versatility and right handed bat could get him here sooner than later.

I'm hoping my guy Stephen Nogosek has put it all together now. Hes ready to "pitch" not just throw anymore.

I was watching the Teufel clip sitting here waiting for some words on Cortes. Alas, none came. Really interested to see if he can keep his Australia success going here in the states.

John: Yes, I surprised myself with remembering Teagarden. I looked up his Mets stats after I posted that. He played for the Mets for 11 days in 2014 and had four hits in 28 at bats (.143). Also had another RBI besides the grand slam.

In short, he did much more in his 11 days with the Mets than Jed Lowrie did in two years.

Tom Brennan said...

Bob W - Lowrie may well go down as the most impotent major baseball signing in history.

Can you go to a Teagarden now without a face mask?

Cortes should have a very good season. Can he find room at the Inn some time this year? Gulliorme and other subs get more expensive by the year - he has the calling card of being an eventual minimum wage call up.

The Tuefel clip was priceless. Glad to hear Newton may have finally put it together offensively.

I don’t think Mazeika is the casualty, besides, isn’t Caleb’s contract a split? Does he have to go on the 40 man now? I actually expect to hear some nice news about Mazeika in Syracuse and hopefully Flushing. Who’s going to be their depth, Caleb? For one year...

Lastly, I’d like to bring up the Matt Allen interview from yesterday. Allen has been tied to JDG to learn from the best (and I can’t believe Allen called him “arguably” the best, show more respect kid) but his speaking skills are impressive. He seemed very at ease and more candid than I expected when talking about possibly contracting Coronavirus from his mom or sister who are both nurses. He looked like he’s done these interviews hundreds of times. My take from his talk was that he may now have three plus pitches, which puts him in ace territory.

Guys like Teagarden -- veteran backup catchers -- are there for 1) In case of an emergency and you need some quick stability before finding a better answer and 2) Veteran experience handling young pitchers in the minors. A guy to help the system along. Kind of like Crash Davis.

I certainly don't know all the nuances and requirements for contracts, but it seems like Joseph could have been signed with a minor league deal with and NRI. I know the split contract (like Martinez) requires him to be on the 40 man.

I'd be glad to hear other thoughts on this . . I get they need him for spring training and AAA depth, but . . .

Quick comment:

I am LOVING the Covid-inspired Q & A videos that the Mets have been providing. Yesterday it was Matt Allen, Nimmo, and Dom Smith.

They were ALL so impressive, articulate, centered, and easy to like.

It's a great format and a great way to "meet" these individual players.

There's so much to like and ENJOY and ROOT FOR with this team.

You also see how the beat reporters become almost pointless, because they spend the next 24 hours tweeting out quotes we all watched, and writing articles that repeat what was said in the videos we just watched. This stuff used to take place in the locker room. The reporters were our liaisons, bringing us the info. Now we have that same direct access.
