Mack's Mock Pick - 1.24 - OF - Benny Montgomery

Benny Montgomery

Mack's spin -

First... there is a lot of raw talent here.

Benny is a ++ defensive outfielder with blazing speed, a strong arm, and a potential lethal bat. Is that enough?

The caution here is his rawness. The team that drafts him will have to make sure they have a verbal in place first and then will have to be patient during the 3-4 years in the system that he will polish off.

Still, a solid first round pick.

18. Benny Montgomery, OF, Red Land HS (PA)

Montgomery is another prep outfielder with well-rounded potential who could propel himself up the board with a strong spring. His charms include a strong arm, above-average speed, and a fast-moving barrel. Montgomery's swing currently features a hitch and a B.J. Upton-like toe tap, both of which should get ironed out between draft day and his arrival in the majors. The raw ingredients are all here, so it's just a matter of him landing in the right system and making adjustments.

Areas To Improve: Refine offensive approach, make more consistent contact,

Tooled up players with rudimentary offensive approaches or plenty of moving parts in the swing have wide error bars and that profile fits Montgomery to a tee. There are very few players in the 2021 class who can compete with his raw power, 70-grade speed, arm strength and outfield defense all together. However, Montgomery will need to give evaluators conviction in his hit tool and that could be challenging against Pennsylvania pitching. There are plenty of moving parts in his setup, so either toning that down or simply showing more consistent contact and putting himself in a better launch position could go a long way.

Minnesota Twins

Benny Montgomery

OF, Red Land (HS)

Whether taking batting practice in a full Borat costume or setting Diamond Kinetics records, Benny Montgomery is unique in every sense of the word. Elite, elite bat speed, foot speed, and raw strength a hyper-athlete, Montgomery is rich in tools but lacks polish. The biggest question surrounding his profile will be whether he'll hit at the next level, though he's worked hard to iron out one of the big hitches in his swing. The Twins take a chance here on an off-the-charts athlete, something they haven't been afraid to do in the past either.

Ht: 6-4 | Wt: 195 | B-T: R-R

Commit/Drafted: Virginia

Age At Draft: 18.8

Tool for tool, Montgomery might be the most talented player in the 2021 class. The 6-foot-4, 195-pound Pennsylvania product immediately stands out with his collection of plus and better tools. He’s got big raw power and manages exit velocities pushing 100 mph when he connects and has consistently been one of the faster runners in the class, clocking multiple sub-6.4-second 60-yard dash times. Montgomery is at least a 70-grade runner and might be a half-grade better, and he pairs power and speed with a strong throwing arm as well. He has a chance to be a premium center fielder and base runner, but scouts are still wondering about his hitting ability. Montgomery is still figuring out his lanky, projectable body at times, and that’s clear in the box. He has a lot of moving parts, including a hand drop that leads to inconsistent timing and contact. The crudeness to his offensive approach has limited his production at the plate and has led evaluators to wondering whether or not he’ll be able to tap into his tools in games at the next level, though he has enough athleticism to make adjustments and refine his game as he matures. The Virginia commit has terrific upside, but he also comes with plenty of risk at the moment.

Benny Montgomery is one of the best power-speed threats in this years class. The physical skills mirror those of Adell four years ago. Montgomery is a sure-fire top ten talent in terms of raw tools, though his hit-ability this spring will likely determine how high his stock can soar.

The ceiling here is a top ten pick with the floor likely being out of reach for Seattle at pick no. 47. If the hit tool really shows out this spring, Montgomery would be the perfect type of project for the Mariners player development staff to sink their teeth into assuming they have the confidence to optimize what’s possible with this kid.

There’s very real superstar potential here, but whomever drafts Montgomery must have conviction and a plan.

25. Oakland Athletics: Benny Montgomery, OF, Red Land (Pa.) HS

Montgomery has elite speed, a strong arm from the outfield, and raw power at the plate. He needs to refine his offensive skills and clean up his swing to get to his power consistently. Montgomery has a high-ceiling but comes with some risk.

Tampa Bay Rays

Pennsylvania has become a bit of a prep baseball hotbed as of late, and considering the Rays dipped there this past draft in taking Nick Bitsko. They could make a return trip next summer and grab outfielder Benny Montgomery. Montgomery is one of the fastest runners, if not the fastest runner in the class, and along with solid arm strength and defense, has the makings of a Gold Glove caliber centerfielder. Where he falters is his bat with a developmental at best contact approach. Montgomery does have power potential though so maybe some fine tuning could help him. Though Montgomery has the potential to be a mid first round pick, he is committed to Virginia, which could make him a difficult sign. Still the Rays have been aggressive before, and could make a strong push to sign him like they did Bitsko, who was also a Virginia commit.

A York County baseball player could be drafted in the first round of the 2021 Major League Baseball draft.

That’s according to rankings released Monday by MLBPipeline.com.

MLBPipeline.com released its list of the top 100 national prospects for the 2021 Major League Baseball draft, which is set for July.

Red Land High School senior Benny Montgomery is listed No. 21 on that list. Last year, 37 players were picked in the first round, including competitive balance selections.

The 6-foot, 4-inch, 200-pound outfielder recently signed a letter of intent to play NCAA Division I baseball for the University of Virginia.

Still, depending on where he is drafted and the money he is offered, Montgomery could opt to sign with a major league organization this summer.

2. Texas Rangers | Kumar Rocker, RHP, Vanderbilt University | (2/31) Benny Montgomery, OF, Red Land

The Rangers gladly took the 6-foot-4, 255-pound Rocker with the second pick in the draft. The college standout had an illustrious freshman season at Vandy and has rocketed to the top of the draft boards ever since. With the 31st overall pick, they took one of the best athletes in the draft in Benny Montgomery. The 18-year-old runs a ridiculous 6.32 second 60-yard dash, throws it 97 from the outfield, and shows raw power at the plate. -Cade Schares

Cervino's Take: The Rangers love taking upside and athleticism but they’ll gladly take Kumar Rocker should he be available with the No. 2 pick. Rocker’s the presumptive 1:1 favorite and would likely be among the best prospects in the Rangers system as a safe, as you can be, arm, Major League starter with a straightforward track to the bigs. Benny Montgomery offers that athleticism and quick twitch that Texas loves as there might not be a prep player with more upside than Montgomery.

Bio:

Height: 6-4

Weight: 200 lbs

Hits/Throws: R-R

Hometown: Lewisberry, PA

School: Red Land

Loud tools. Incredibly mature for his age. Potential for three 60+ tools in power, run and arm. Frame is still long and lean. Could comfortably add 15 pounds of muscle. Some swing and miss in aggressive cuts. Montgomery has an unorthodox approach at the plate. He has a tendency to drift forward and his hands will lag back and drift as well. Still, Montgomery finds a way to wrap his bat in the process and uncoil for incredible barrel speed. It's not pretty, but neither was Hunter Pence during his hayday. Montgomery will need to show an improved hit tool before next July if he's to creep into Top 10 consideration. If he starts driving balls against upper level arms, the talent is there to become the first outfielder off the board. The point has to be made though, there may not be a higher ceiling in the entire draft, bar none.

Benny Montgomery is a 2021 OF/RHP with a 6-4 200 lb. frame from Lewisberry, PA who attends Red Land. Long, lanky athletic build with plenty of physical projection remaining. Outstanding runner, 6.32 in the sixty, speed really impacts the game both offensively and defensively. Huge arm strength in the outfield, big whip to his arm, lower half mechanics are inconsistent but time and repetitions will address that, highest level defensive potential. Right handed hitter, starts with a high hand set and a quick hitch into his swing, long and loose swing with bat speed, gets the barrel out front and creates big jump with lots of back spin, strong enough to shrink the field with his line drive carry. Elite level athlete with growing baseball skills
