2021 MLB Draft - Mets Pick # 9.262 - RHP - Levi David (UPDATED - ADDED SCOUTING INFO)

Levi David

Mack's spin -

David is a converted pitcher that is making waves in the field these past few seasons for Northwester State.

His speed and defensive ability remind me a lot like Jake Magnum and, like Magnum, he is going to have to rev up the hitting if he wants to make it to the Big Tent.

Still, I like the pick, even if even it turns out to be nothing more than a usable affiliate player.

RHP      6-5     220     Northwestern State

David was a third-team All-Southland Conference selection in his first year as a starting pitcher. His 104 strikeouts tied for the second-most in school single-season history while his 15.34 strikeouts per nine innings ranked him third nationally.

In his first collegiate season as a starting pitcher, David limited opposing batters to 5.02 hits per nine innings, a mark that led the Southland Conference and ranked seventh nationally. After making five relief appearances in the COVID-19-shortened 2020 season, David appeared in 14 games with 13 starts in the 2021 season.

He posted three double-figure strikeout games, including fanning 14 McNeese hitters on May 8, falling one strikeout shy of tying the school single-game record.

Strengths

Usher is one of the fastest players in the 2021 draft class. He finished the season with the 13th-most stolen bases in Division I baseball, and was 16th in swiped bags per game (0.53).

His speed translates well out in the outfield, and is an all-around good defensive asset. He has the range you want for a center fielder, and has good arm strength to boot.

Prior to the 2021 season, he had shown great ability with the bat in his hand. He could hit for plus contact, and had power potential at times.

Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week (April 5)

Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week (March 22)

2021 Season:

• Whiffed a career-high 14 batters in 6 2-3 innings, taking a no-decision in NSU's 11-inning win against McNeese in Game 2 of a May 8 doubleheader. The 14 strikeouts were the second most in a single game in school history.

• earned Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week honors for the second time in three weeks after striking out 12 in seven scoreless innings of an April 2 win at Abilene Christian.

• struck out a career-high 12 in 6 1-3 innings of a win at Sam Houston (Game 2) on March 20, earning Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week honors.

4.43 ERA? No one better available?

So far, 3 picks, all RHPs. Interesting.

I guess it was his strikeout rate
