Today in Mets History Per Ultimatemets.com:
Born on this date:
- Joe Torre (1940)
- Razor Shines (1956)
- Robert Gsellman (1993)
1980 | The Mets play their 3,000th game in franchise history, dropping an 8-3 decision in the nightcap of a twin bill sweep by Cincinnati at Riverfront Stadium. The Amazins have compiled a 1300-1694 (.434) record along with six ties since playing their first game in 1962. |
2000 | Hitting four doubles in a game, which has occurred only 37 times in the last century, is accomplished twice today. In a 12-4 drubbing of the Cubs, Royals leadoff hitter Johnny Damon accomplishes the rare feat, as does Shannon Stewart of the Blue Jays in an 11-7 loss to the Mets at the Skydome as C Mike Piazza hits his 3rd grand slam of the season. |
2008 | In the last concert hosted at Shea Stadium, Billy Joel gets a little help from his friends as Paul McCartney joins him on stage and sings "I Saw Her Standing There," to a tremendous ovation from the sold-out crowd of 55,000 stunned fans. 'Sir Paul' tells the crowd the Beatles had a 'blast' playing at Shea that night in 1965, the year after the Mets home ballpark opened. |

An epic fail. Right up there with some of the worst of all time.
DeGrom has probably been hurting for some time. It's why he doesn't go more than six innings. And, yes there is something wrong with his arm. I'm not buying the "clean MRI.
Bob W
Dominguez...Dominguez...Dominguez...3 on one team??
Mauricio is truly heating up. Good to see it. Maybe he is mad he is still in Bklyn and Baty is not.
Another gem for Ginn.
Jaylen Palmer is, like Mauricio, also on fire. Speedster showing top 15 prospect abilities.
Bob W - WORST LOSS EVER?
Megill's fault - he needed to go 9. Megill was great for 6 though - he did his job.
If deGrom is damaged goods, this season could be ready for the toilet plunger.
I make no excuses for Edwin - as soon as he hit the first batter on the first pitch, I shut it off. But Stallings goes deep on 100 MPH on inside corner? Tip your hat.
Is the mirage of 2021 starting to crumble?
Tom:
Not the worst, but probably in the top ten. Luis Castillo's dropped pop up still stands out as the worst to me.
Bob W
Wow…kids asked me when was the last time we had as bad a loss as this and I said “don’t make me.
My head will explode. Get Daddy a beer. “
Just awful.
And the humiliation was not just on the field.
The stands too.
All those poor 7Line folks!
And 3 of my buds who were sitting on the 1st base line giving it to Nogowski all night til he gets the big hit and comes out to first and yells at them, “Not so mouthy now!”
They rejoined the 7Line soon after.
And what about Stroman? The Mets resident tough guy is the smallest guy in the league with the biggest mouth. Nagowski BTW, outweighs him by 65 lbs and was gracious in the post game saying it’s just 2 competitive guys going after each other, and Stroman calls him a clown. Classy. Very classy.
And if you watch the replay of the rumble, Stroman actually bends over to puke he was so shaken and then sprints to dugout to not do it in public.
After the game he said he hurt his foot is why he bent over. Oh please. That’s why you SPRINTED to the dugout? His teammates know the truth. He’s a punk.
