1-20-23 - Top 25 Breakdown: No. 19 Virginia

Star Power: Jake Gelof, who clubbed 21 home runs last season, is one of the best power hitters in college baseball, and while Virginia has others in the lineup who have significant raw power like Ethan Anderson, Saucke and Teel, his power production will be important for a team that has a projected lineup with just one other player who hit 10 or more home runs last season, and that was Ethan O’Donnell with 10 at Northwestern. More than just a basher, though, Gelof has good feel to hit, draws plenty of walks—he had a team leading 41 of them last season—and handles himself well defensively at third base.

Junior third baseman Jake Gelof was ranked No. 38 overall and was the 5th-ranked third baseman. Gelof had a record-breaking sophomore campaign in 2022, setting the UVA single-season RBI record with 81, becoming the first Cavalier in program history to drive in 80 or more runs in one season. Gelof hit 21 home runs in 2022 and has now hit five career home runs in the NCAA Tournament, which is also a program record. He was voted an All-American by several college baseball media sites and was selected to the All-ACC First-Team at the end of the season.

37. Detroit Tigers

Jake Gelof, 3B, Virginia

The Tigers and new man-in-charge Scott Harris are set to rebuild their organization and development path to the big leagues and Gelof is great clay to get that kicked off. Gelof is an aggressive hitter with plus raw power and certainly has the chops to stick at third base as a pro.

12-6-22 - Fall Report: Virginia - https://d1baseball.com/fall-report/virginia-2022/ -

It starts with the return of junior third baseman Jake Gelof and junior catcher Kyle Teel, the cornerstones of the Virginia lineup and two elite prospects for the 2023 draft.

Gelof had the monster season in 2022 that was anticipated after he got scalding hot during the 2021 postseason and helped lift the Cavaliers to the College World Series. He batted .377/.477/.764 with 21 home runs and 81 RBIs. He’s an aggressive swinger, though that hasn’t resulted in huge strikeout numbers and hasn’t affected his ability to take walks—he drew 41 of them last season to tie for the team lead—and his power is a game-changer. Defensively, he’ll likely want to cut down on his 12 errors from last season, but he’s a good athlete with a strong arm at the hot corner.

23. Jake Gelof, 3B, Virginia – The hot corner for Virginia may as well be renamed the Gelof corner as Zach manned it from 2019-2021 before being selected in the second round by the Oakland Athletics. In 2021 Jake shared some time there with his older brother, then put Zach’s numbers to shame in 2022 when Jake hit .377 and launching 21 home runs. He has true plus power potential with a quality approach at the plate that allows him to draw plenty of walks, but he also strikes out quite a bit, leading 42% of his trips to the plate ending on one of the three true outcomes a season ago. In the field he is inconsistent, there are days he looks like a no-brainer to stick at third, then there are days he truly struggles at the position, so what a team thinks of his defensive future will be a big factor into how high he goes in the draft.

Jake Gelof

Virginia

Gelof has been an anchor for Virginia, just as his brother was. And it's been right from the get-go. It's plus power from the right side with an affinity to use the whole field. Scouts actually like Jake's swing more than they did his brother's, and that's saying something. He's a fringy runner, but he plays a strong third base and projects to stick there at the next level. An aggressive hitter, scouts would like to see Gelof up his walks a bit in 2023 as he figures to get less and less pitches to hit as teams figure to pitch around him.

10-16-22 - 2023 MLB Draft: an early look at the ACC

7. 3B Jake Gelof, Virginia.

Bat: R. Throw: R. 6'1", 195 lbs. Born 2/25/2002. Hometown: Rehoboth Beach, DE.

2022: 21 HR, .377/.477/.764, 3 SB, 49/41 K/BB in 58 games.

Zack Gelof hit .316/.396/.478 with 16 home runs over a three year career at UVA, then went to the A's in the second round of the 2021 draft. Two years later, his brother Jake has a chance to beat his draft position, now that he's coming off a monster sophomore season in which he set the UVA school record for RBI (81) and finished near the top of the school leaderboards in multiple other stats. He loves to turn on the ball and can do so virtually anywhere in the zone, not having to wait for that middle-in fastball to crank one. ACC pitching did not faze him one bit, as he hammered virtually everything thrown at him and had opposing managers circling his name in the lineup. Despite the big numbers, he wasn't always the most consistent hitter and lost his approach at times, but those highest on the Delaware native may be willing to write that off as an underclassman just being a young hitter. There is also some swing and miss present in his game, as he ran an 18.7% strikeout rate this past spring, but he's pretty patient too and overall it's not a major concern. He has the look of a 25+ home run hitter with solid on-base percentages that can hit in the middle of a major league lineup if everything breaks right and he gets more consistent at the plate. He's also a solid defender at third base that should be able to stick there, providing additional value all around. There are many similarities to Yohandy Morales on this list, though Morales is bigger, more athletic, and had a better summer.
