Pick to Click: Nathan Dettmer. Give me the talented righthander as the Aggies’ breakout player. It seems odd to call someone who started on Friday nights at times last season as a ‘breakout’ player, but Dettmer, for my money, will go from a guy with an ERA nearing five to a guy with a much lower ERA this spring. Dettmer has a terrific 6-foot-4, 230-pound frame, and showed an uptick in fastball velocity this past fall, getting up to 97-98 mph the offering after sitting in the low-to-mid 90s with the heater last season. The key for Dettmer will be establishing more consistency with his breaking ball, and showing a bit of a meaner streak on the bump.

Dettmer was on scouting radars as a Texas high schooler in 2020, but not to the extent that he would get drafted to try to lure him away from Texas A&M. He had a stretch of allowing a total of five runs in five Southeastern Conference starts in the middle of last season, then faltered down the stretch before finishing with seven shutout innings against Notre Dame at the College World Series. He sparked more interest by popping 99 mph with his fastball during fall practice after peaking at 96 as a sophomore.
Dettmer's fastball has more sink and run at 92-95 mph and starts to straighten out and get hit when he pushes it into the upper 90s, so he's still learning how to maximize its effectiveness. He backs up his heater with a solid slider that features tight break in the low 80s, and he also has a distinct upper-70s curveball with more depth. He keeps left-handers off the fastball with a mid-80s changeup with quality tumble.
While Dettmer provides a reasonable amount of strikes from a high three-quarters slot, his control and command still could use some improvement. If he can locate his heater better and land his secondary pitches more consistently, he might have three plus offerings. He has a strong 6-foot-4 frame built for durability, adding to his mid-rotation starter upside.

38. Nathan Dettmer, RHP, Texas A&M – Dettmer was a key arm for the Aggies in their run to Omaha a season ago lifting him from off the radar to a legitimate draft prospect. His fastball can get into the upper 90s with a heavy downhill plane but his best offering is his massive slider, although it is very inconsistent. He also has a change that has plenty of potential that gives him a quality starter mix to go with a prototypical starter frame. Consistency is key as he does not have the track record and the stuff can be so spotty in terms of being on from one game to the next, but a good season and Dettmer could make himself a lot of money.

Junior righthanded pitcher Nathan Dettmer is expected to take a big step forward. Dettmer had his fair share of ups down last season, but the frame is excellent at 6-foot-4, 235 pounds and the stuff is elite at times. Dettmer was up to 98-99 mph with his fastball this fall but will pitch more comfortably in the low-to-mid 90s with the heater. He also continues to make strides with the changeup and the slider. Dettmer threw two variations of a breaking ball last season, and at times, the sharper low-80s breaker was a plus offering. It was not consistent, however. Dettmer still has some improvements to make, but if everything comes together, he could see himself rising the prospect ranks even more.

Dettmer, a hero for Texas A&M in the 2022 college baseball playoffs, is more than a folk hero. A prototype frame, Dettmer can rush the fastball up into the upper-90s with mega sink out of an extremely high slot, but it's his slider, changeup combo that gets the headlines. The slider is above average-to-plus with two-plane break and considerable depth. The changeup has some fading action that can be effective against lefty bats, although it's mostly a roll-em-over offering. Dettmer doesn't yet have the consistency with his pitches to call anyything a true weapon, but he's got the build and clay teams covet when selecting college arms early on day two.
